Kankuro had help from the rest of his division. Gaara didn't have that luxury while fighting Deidara plus he had to deal with protecting the village as well.

well only way i see kankaro wining if he can attach his strings to gaara but then again both are long range fighters..... gaara has longer range attacks so imo gaara wins

In my opionion, Gaara will simply over power Kankuro with his sand attacks and wit.

Although some form of challenge from Kankuro may be present, Gaara won't even break a sweat facing Kankuro.
