Wrong...broke out of Water prision to keep Tenten/Lee from drowning.

This then allowed the rest of team Gai to go and remove the tags (note Neji also had to remove a tag) allowing for team Kakashi to retrieve the Kazekage's body, and finally revive him. The Kazekage then rallied the army as one so that they could work together.

Also he saved Hinata as well as Naruto....while Hinata was in the way those spikes drove deep into Neji...Hinata also looked slightly too close to Naruto where he'd have been hit too.

Also he always looked like a medieval archer to me
