Itachi: And so, Hagoromo proceeded with his plan to share his powers with ordinary people, against Hamura’s advice. And naturally, this led to even more conflict in our era than we had ever witnessed. Power leads to conceit, conceit leads to foolish desires. Wars ensued, the world became a battleground where only the strongest could survive. Hagoromo tried to mediate and resolve the problems he created but to no avail. At that moment Hamura realised that only he could solve this problem.
Sasuke: What do you mean?
Itachi: By obliterating all participants in the war.
Naruto: ?!
Itachi: Although ordinary humans possessed chakra, its quality was of a far lower stock than that of Kaguya and her two sons. Hamura was capable of ending the war with his own two hands and that’s what he did. By striking fear into humans it can deter them for a short while. This is a necessary evil that was born out of Hagoromo’s mistake. But he didn’t see it that way…

Itachi: Hagoromo saw Hamura as an even bigger threat to the safety of the world, bigger than the ordinary humans he gave chakra too. And thus a battle between the two ensued and Hamura lost. He suffered the same fate as his mother, sealed away by his only brother…

Itachi: And not only that…Aware of the strong vitality of our clan, not just of our bodies but our souls too, Hagoromo placed a cursed on Hamura’s transmigrants. A fate that they would all suffer, a disease that gnaws away at their bodies since the moment of their birth. Transmigrants of Hamura come with a set expiry date so that they may never know the truth. A plan that has worked up until my birth.
Sasuke: How do you know all this?
Itachi: The stone tablets. And that’s not the only thing I’ve worked out…

Itachi: I’ve figured a way to conquer the curse and all of the conditions have been met…
*Flashback to Itachi totsuka’ing Hagoromo, Sakura and Kakashi*
Itachi: The chakras of Hagoromo, Ashura, Indra and Kaguya are all in the same place. Not only did this allow me to break free of the pure world, but by gathering all of these chakras and combining them into one I can use this to achieve my revival! Not only that… By absorbing all these chakras I can return chakra to the ootsutsuki clan and break the curse that lingers over mankind! All that’s left to gather…is YOUR chakras!
*The last thing we see is a look of horror on Sasuke and Naruto’s face as Itachi is just about to totsuka them, on the final page we learn than many years have passed and the world is at peace. Itachi is shown in a king’s chair with a crown on, looking down from a tower as children play and laugh and adults share sake with one another. Ignorant of a time when such things as "chakra" and "ninjutsu" existed because Itachi wiped their memories with genjutsu. Now, Itachi is the only living being with such powers and as a result he is worshipped as a God. Fearing God's judgement, mankind has seen a lot less strife.*
