Well, you're half right, the water jutsu wouldn't protect him against the spikes, cause they appear from underground, and water is weak to earth, but when its C rank Earth vs A rank water, the water would win, or atleast cancel out the earth, but in this case, the spikes appear from below, and the water jutsu is a wall around the user, it won't protect him against the spikes.
