Goblins' Gold

Peter was taking pictures with his Nikon camera, of the march of the city orchestra, and then the Mayor who gave his inspiring – but hypocritical- speech. Mary Jane joined him soon, and after eating a few dozen hot dogs –bulk of which had landed in Shaggy’s and Scooby’s mouths-, the gang teamed up with the couple.

„Hey guys, could you find something out?” -asked Mary Jane.

„Norman is crazy.”- Scooby Doo summed up the diagnosis, pointing at his head with his paw, indicating the mental state of the subject.

„Well, he is the Green Goblin, what did you expect?”- Peter said.

„But there is a chance he knows something.”- Fred added.

„Well, he IS the Green Goblin, what is there to be surprised about?”- Peter rolled his eyes.

„You don’t mean he was the one attacking Oscorp?”- Daphne’s eyes widened.

„Nay. But as the original Goblin, he might have a connection with the impostor.”- Peter elaborated.

„Maybe…maybe a father-son relation?”- Velma proposed.

„Maybe. But I hope not. Harry Osborn used to be my best friend. It’s just…”-Peter stopped.

„What happened?”- Daphne asked with empathy in her voice.

„Life.”- Peter briefly replied.

„I see. It’s alright if you don’t want to let us know.”- Daphne consoled him.

„That’s a long and sad story. We are not really in contact anymore.”

„Anyway, did you have lunch?”- Mary Jane interjected, so as to relieve her tiger, from the burden of memories.

„Of course, or else we’d be already dead.”- Shaggy responded.

„So, what’s next guys? Do you have any plans for the rest of the day?”- Peter asked.

„Though we understand if you won’t like it…and so, of course you don’t have to accompany us…but we would like to ask some questions from Harry Osborn as well. Of course, nothing personal. Just questions about the case. He will probably be cooperative, considering that his company is at risk here.”- Fred sketched the plan for the evening.

„It’s your choice. But you know the saying: like father, like son. Don’t expect much from Harry. I warned you.”- Peter cautioned the gang.

„He can’t be crazier than his pops.”- Shaggy said.

„Yeah, Norman is nuts.”- Scooby seconded.

„Yes, we already know that.”- Daphne silenced them.

„At least, will you dine with us, Peter and Mary Jane?”- Fred turned to the couple.

„I’m sorry again, but I’ve got business to do. I have to make some more photos, and take them to the Daily Bugle. My employer will kill me if I don’t convey him some great stuff.”- Peter excused himself.

„I think I’ll stay with Peter for the time being.”- Mary Jane joined Peter.

„It can’t be helped then.”- sighed Fred.

„At least more food will remain for us.”- Shaggy rejoiced.

„Food, food…always just food.”- Daphne shook her head.

„Myteries, ghosts, ghosts, mysteries.”- Shaggy rebutted.

„Shag, ghosts don’t exist.”- Daphne lectured his friend.

„Really, tell that to him!”- Shaggy pointed at the small spot on the light blue sky, approaching at a high speed. It was the Green Goblin on his glider! The crowd caught sight of him too, and they started cowering in fear. The Goblin puffed some smoke at them to increase the scary factor, which resulted in people starting to run and scream. The Mayor was about to be escorted to safety by his bodyguards, but the Goblin knocked them out. Hovering on glider, he threatened Mayor Major:

„If I don’t get what I want, I’ll kill you. You know what I’m talking about.”

The Mayor was so afraid he couldn’t utter a word.

„Boo!”- the Goblin pulled his face. The Mayor stepped back in fear, but stumbled and fell over his guards.

„What an idiot.”- Green Goblin murmured, turned his glider around, puffed some smoke in the Mayor’s face, made some more rounds above the heads of the people around, and left.

The gang was taking shelter under a tree during the scene. They didn’t hear the Goblin’s words to the Mayor due to the distance, but their suspicion about the robbery being connected to actual politics, had gained confirmation.

„Are you all right???”- Peter turned to his friends.

„Gosh, we could have died.”- Shaggy sobbed.

„Don’t exaggerate, he was not after us.”- Fred replied.

„It has yellow eyes!”- Scooby was pointing at his own eyes.

„Scoob, not now.”- Fred shut Scooby up.

„Where was Spiderman at a time like this?”- some strangers discussed the case a few metres away. Peter, having heard them, clenched his fist, which didn’t go unnoticed by Fred, but the latter stayed silent about it.

„At least your boss will have his story, right, Peter?”- Fred turned to the photographer.

„I guess so.”- Peter laughed awkwardly. „By the way, my boss…I think we had better go now.”

„I’m sorry guys. See you at the fireworks at night!- said MJ, and ran after Peter. The place was a total mess. Most people had run away, leaving behind their belongings, their litter, and even some little children, the orchestra dropped its instruments, and the Mayor had fled with his team.

The police soon arrived, closing down the area. The gang helped cleaning up, and taking care of children till their parents found them.

„So much for free food.”- Shaggy sighed, once the haste was over.

„Not that again!”- Daphne, Velma and Fred yelled at him in synchron.

„Can we go dine, please?”- Scooby begged those three.

„Well, it’s really dinner time, if we think of it.”- said Fred, cooling himself down.

„What a day!”- Daphne added, sighing.

„Now I’m really curious to meet Harry Osborn. Something tells me that all roads lead to Oscorp.”- Velma wondered, after they had finished eating, in the same pizzeria as yesterday. The people around were all chatting about the new Goblin, appearance of which was the main theme of the evening news.

„And all slices of pizza lead down my throat.”- Shaggy said, swallowing the last piece of the hawaii pizza he had ordered. The others ignored him. The air was gloomy, as they couldn’t put the puzzle together yet. Fred, Velma and Daphne started feeling that this mystery might really be bigger than their abilities to untie its threads. Velma’s idea to visit Harry Osborn was indeed their last resort- it’s either they find the solution in Oscorp, or the case remains unsolved.
„Well, as Shaggy and Scoob has both finished eating, let’s move.”- Fred instructed the gang.

Oscorp was a gigantic company, with gigantic buildings for different purposes: offices, factories, research labs. It was the hugest monster in the concrete jungle: a modern behemoth. Its chimneys were emitting polluting gases nonstop, its mouth burping up acids and liquids full of toxic chemicals, channeled into the sea, its stomach growling by the machinery it hosted. Oscorp employed thousands of scientists, assistants, guards, mechanists, numerous think tanks and such. However, it was struggling financially, due to the oil crises of 1973 and 1979.

The Sun had already set by the time the gang reached Oscorp. They had no appointment this time either, but when Harry Osborn was informed that the visitors are friends of Peter Parker, he got curious. Troubled as he was, he received his guests rudely, in his office on the first floor of the main building.

„So, what do I owe the honor of Peter Parker’s friends coming to me?”- he asked when a gatekeeper introduced the gang. Harry was sitting in his chair, behind his desk. In front of the desk, there was a long conference table, with several seats, as the board meetings were held here. The room also served as the place where Harry negotiated with the more reputed investors and shareholders. However, as the gang was none of the above, Harry didn’t bother offering them seats. The room was sufficiently lit, casting light on the young CEO, who was the same age as Peter, but wrinkles had already appeared on his face- the result of the burden of running one of the world’s biggest companies.

„Mr. Osborn, thank you for accepting us. We are investigating the robbery of your company, and we would like to help you. We also visited your father in the…”- Fred stopped for a moment, looking for an euphemistic word-„…in his cell.”- The phrase he uttered might not have been the luckiest one, as Harry’s countenance became even darker.

„The police are already investigating the case. You are butting your noses into something that is none of your concern.”- Harry answered coldly.

„But we are great at solving mysteries. If you would be kind enough to answer some questions, we could put together the pieces of the bigger picture.”- Velma tried her luck.

„What could a dog, a nerd, a barbie doll, a pimp, and a skeleton do for me?”- Harry said tauntingly.

„Sir, we…”- Fred started, but Harry interrupted.

„There is nothing you can do, apart from giving me a headache. I don’t want some kids messing with my privacy.

Especially if these kids are friends with Peter Parker.”- Harry stressed Peter’s name in a way that people use to express their grudge against someone. Realizing that he might have been too offensive, he added: „I’m sorry but please leave me alone. I have enough things to worry about already.”

All of a sudden the windows behind him broke with a loud booming noise. It was the Green Goblin! Harry took shelter under his desk, while teh gang cowered under the conference table.

„Harry Osborn. I’ve come for what belongs to me!”- the Goblin said, hovering midair on his gadget- that was originally developed by Oscorp.

„I don’t know what you want!”- Harry shouted.

„You know very well what I want. Hand over the real thing!”- the Goblin demanded. „I know it is here.”- he added.

„Only through my life! It’s my father’s legacy! Whoever you are, you won’t have it!”- Harry stood up, his mind made up.

„I am your father!”- the Goblin laughed. Harry’s eyes widened. „That can’t be!”

„Now, my boy, give me the real serum!”- the Goblin reached his hand out.

Harry obeyed. He turned to his desk, opened one of its drawers, and took something out. He quickly turned around, pointed the gun at the Goblin, and was about to pull the trigger, but the Goblin was faster, and threw a goblindart at Harry’s hand, who dropped the weapon and cried out loud, his hand bleeding.

„You fool! I know it is here somewhere. Let me take a look at that safe next to your seat, Mr. C-E-O.”- the Goblin snickered, took a small pumpkin -like bomb out of his pouch, and threw it next to Harry. Harry froze, and couldn’t move an inch. The bomb was to explode when a web-like thread got attached to it, and it was thrown out of the room. It exploded midair.

„Spiderman!”- Harry and the Green Goblin shouted at the same time, with surprise. The gang peeped out from under the table. Spiderman was hanging upside down behind the Goblin.

„I’m sorry for being late to the party.”- Spiderman said, waving towards Harry.

„You were not invited!”- the Goblin groaned, and charged at Spiderman. He engaged the Goblin, and the two started brawling on the glider. The Goblin lost control over his machine, and they both fell of. However, Spiderman could cast a web, aiming at a pole. The Goblin fell on the ground, swearing. His glider got crashed, so he knew he is in trouble. Spiderman spinned around and elegantly landed on the yard behind the main building. Harry crawled on all fours to the window, and peeked out. The Goblin ran inside one of the facilities, Spiderman being after him. The gang creeped out from under the table. Daphne and Velma tended to Harry’s wounds.

„Are you alright?”- Daphne asked, tying a piece of cloth around the wound.

„Thank you.”- Harry said silently. His expensive suit was covered with blood.

„What was this all about?”- Fred asked. Harry didn’t look in Fred’s eyes.

„Sigh…Norman Osborn, my father developed with his team a super soldier serum, and when he tested the stuff on himself, he became the Green Goblin- as you probably know. He gained superhuman strength and reflexes, but his mind became unstable. He stole some gadgets and started committing crimes. Spiderman has stopped him and put him in asylum. I had to take the company over. We have developed a new serum without the side effects of the first one. Oscorp has made a contract with the US Army to start producing this serum en masse. This would have solved our financial troubles. Once the contract is fulfilled and the serum is delivered, the public will be informed about the successes of the United States against the Soviet Union. The serum would be given to soldiers in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Vietnam, and other places where proxy wars are being waged. Then, Oscorp stocks would skyrocket, and we’d be rich like never before. Few days ago, however, someone, wearing the Goblin’s suit, broke in and tried to steal the formula. The one he stole, though, was a fake. I have the real thing here in my safe. That’s why the Goblin came back. He was tricked, and he got enraged. I can’t believe though that my father is behind this…that’s impossible!”- Harry finished, panting.

„I see. Daphne will stay with you, I’ll call the ambulance and the police. Fred, Scooby and Shag, go help Spiderman!”- Velma took charge.

„Why we?”- Shaggy nagged.

„Just go! You are the men! After that, you can eat as much as you want!”- Velma promised. Shaggy and Scoob were energized.

„With great food comes fast legs!” –Shaggy said and ran out, followed by Scooby and Fred. When they arrived to the facility Spiderman and the Goblin ran into, the two archenemies were playing hide and seek, among the industrial culdrons, cranes, conveyor belts and other machines.

„Spiderman, what can we help with?”- Fred asked the hero.

„Don’t get in the way, for starters.”- Spiderman said seriously. „The Goblin is dangerous.”

The aforementioned villain tried to take advantage of Spiderman being distracted by the gang, and threw a dart at him. Spiderman’s spiderreflex rang the alarm in Spidey’s head, and evaded the attack. The dart betrayed teh direction of the Goblin’s hiding place. Spiderman leaped over to the culdron, but the Goblin ran away, hiding behind a dashboard. He pulled one of the levers, and the conveyor belts started moving with a squeaking noise.

„Hey Scoob, let’s help Spiderman! Use your smell to locate the Goblin and bark if you’ve found him! Shaggy and I will tie him with a rope once he starts running away from Spiderman, right into our trap!”- Fred told them his plan. Scooby galloped away, following his nose. Shaggy and Fred grabbed the two ends of a chain they found. Soon they heard the barking of Scooby Doo.

„Spiderman, that’s Scooby! He’s found the Goblin!”- Fred shouted over to Spiderman.

Spiderman jumped up to the corridor leading above the culdron. It was full of a boiling liquid. Small tanks were run by the conveyor belts, and whenever one reached above the culdron, the tank was sank down, filled with the liquid, and moved onwards to another culdron. Spiderman cautiously navigated among the machines, moving towards where the barking came from. The Goblin was not scared, however. He took a weird gadget, resembling a gun, and puffed some smoke at Scooby, who started coughing heavily. It was a hallucinative gas, which made the Goblin look even more spooky. Scooby Doo ran away, and bumped into the chain set up by Fred and Shaggy. The Goblin climbed up to the corridor as well, and faced Spiderman. In the meantime, Scooby Doo was crazily running in circles, still seeing visions. Fred and Shaggy looked like monsters trying to catch him. Scooby, without thinking much, ran up to the same corridor, escaping Fred and Shaggy who didn’t know what’s gotten into the dog. Spiderman punched the Goblin in the face, the Goblin stumbled, and the amok great dane, running pell-mell, pushed him over the railing. The Goblin fell over, into the culdron.

„Guys, stop the dog!”- Spiderman shouted, while he tried to pull the Goblin out of the boiling liquid. His web, however, melted in the heat. Next he threw a web at the lever, and pulled it. The system stopped, and finally they managed to save the Goblin. Scooby Doo calmed down, as the effects of the gas dispersed. The Goblin didn’t suffer serious injuries, but he was dizzy and almost fainted. Fred and Shag tied him up with the chain, and Spiderman pulled off the Goblin’s mask.

„Mr.Allen!”- Fred and Shaggy exclaimed with astonishment.

„I knew you meddling kids would cause me trouble.”- the lawyer snarled, with a weak voice.

„I thought you are a loyal friend of the Osborn family! Poor Harry.”- Shaggy said.

„He is just a rat that has sold his soul to another rat.”- Spiderman corrected Shaggy.

„I’ve heard that somewhere before.”- Fred remarked.

„Maybe in a rodenticide advertisement?”- Spiderman wondered.

„Never mind. The police will soon be here. Our friends have already called them.”- Fred informed Spiderman.
„Good old police, they always come when the party is over.”- Spiderman joked.

„You were great Spiderman! Thanks for saving our lives!”- Scooby said, and jumped into the lap of the protagonist, licking his face- through the mask.

„Nay, you are the real hero, Scooby!”- Spiderman humbly replied and let the dog go. Scooby Doo pulled Fred’s shirt, and started explaining somethign with his paws.

„What’s it Scoob?”- Fred asked.

„His smell, his smell!”- Scooby said. At the same time, the syrens of police cars were warranting that the authorities have arrived.

„Scoob, not now.”- Fred hushed Scooby.

„Well, it’s best if I go, unless I want to be invited for another party, in the jail.”- Spiderman said.

„Curse you Spiderman! The wrath of the Green Goblin will reach you one day!”- Allen swore.

„Shut up, you’ll go to jail.”- Shaggy said bravely, but cowered when the Goblin gave him an angry look.

„Look at the bright side of it, you’ll get free food there. I’m green with envy.”- Spiderman told the Goblin, teasingly.

„Ha-ha-ha.”- the gang laughed.

„Well, it’s time to go. It was nice to meet you, folks! Don’t forget to watch the fireworks!”- Spiderman bid his farewell, and swang away in the night air.

„The fireworks! We’ve got to meet up with Peter and Mary Jane. I’m afraid we’ll be late though.”- Fred reminded themselves. The police took Mr.Allen away, and the ambulance tended to Harry Osborn’s wounds, who said thanks to the Mystery Inc., relieved that the Goblin is behind bars, and deep inside, that his father was not involved this time.

„After all, he is not as bad as his father.”- Fred concluded, as they were driving to the meeting place to see the fireworks.

„Yeah, but still, not everything is clear to me.”- Daphne complained. „Like, what’s the connection between Wilson Fisk and Allen? What’s the Mayor’s role in all this?”

„Hmmm, we will discuss it later. Now, let’s hurry up, the fireworks has already started!”- Fred answered.

The gang joined MJ and Peter in the crowd. The fireworks, shining in the colors of the rainbow, took the shape of flowers on the raven sky- another species of the concrete jungle’s flora.

After the event, the gang sat in a restaurant with Peter and MJ. Fred summed up the busy night they had.

„Wow, Spiderman! You guys are lucky to have met him! And you even helped him catch the Green Goblin! Great job, you are better than I thought!”- Peter commended the gang.

„Thank you. But we still don’t get a few things. Could you figure out something, Peter?”- Fred asked.

„Actually, yes, and it makes sense to me. Here it is:

In the morning I took a visit to the agency on the card we found. I diverted the attention of the people a little, and have managed to search through some documents. It wasn’t nice of me, but things happen.”- Peter winked.- „I’ve found that Wilson Fisk has bought tons of Oscorp shares, through this agency. Now, why would he buy stocks at a company that has been struggling financially? Obviously, he knew something others didn’t. He knew Oscorp is about to conclude a business with the government. Where did he get the info from? „

„The Mayor!”- Velma exclaimed. She felt ashamed, on two accounts: she couldn’t figure this all out by herself…and every guest in the restaurant fixed their eyes on the enthusiastic girl. She blushed and apologized for her loudness. The guests continued eating, and Peter went on:

„Yes, the Mayor. He sold the info to Kingpin.”

„Insider trading…”- Fred remarked.

„Exactly. It’s against the law, but these gangsters don’t care. Fisk is funding the Mayor’s electorial campaign, in exchange for pieces of information like this.”- Peter explained.- „As for Allen’s role. As Osborn’s lawyer, he probably knew where to find the Goblin’s suit and gadgets. Fortunately, he didn’t have the original serum, which would have granted him superhuman strength, at the cost of his sanity, however. As friend of the Osborns, he probably knew that Oscorp is developing a new, better formula. So, he took the Goblin’s identity, broke in Oscorp- and he stole the serum. A fake one, as it turned out. Remember the night we met him going after Kingpin at the theatre. Probably he wanted to sell the fake to Fisk. Kingpin, learning that it’s a fake one, instructed Allen to steal the real thing this time. But Fisk is more cunning than that. He knew he can’t trust Allen, and he didn’t want to risk him screwing up again. Fisk has nothing to lose anyway, in fact, stealing the real serum would have put his interests in Oscorp stocks in jeopardy. So Fisk informed Spiderman, and that’s why he could show up in time to save you.”- Peter finished.

„Wow.”- Shaggy left his mouth open.

„But…how do you know all that?”- Fred asked, suspiciously.

„Well, some of this is just my own assumption.”- Peter winked. Fred and Velma were not convinced.

„Wait…something has just occured to me. If Allen knows the secrets of the Goblin and Oscorp from Norman…then there is someone else who…”- Velma stopped, and looked in the eyes of Peter. He understood immediately, and stood up.

„Wait, Peter, are you going somewhere?”- MJ asked.

„No time to explain.”- Peter said, and rushed out.

_______
Spiderman masterfully infiltrated the Ravencroft Institue, avoiding the guards and the cameras. He sneaked in Dr.Kafka’s room, but he was already late. There was a short note on her desk:

„I quit my job. Don’t look for me.” Ashley Kafka

There were dozens of Vcards of stock market agents on the desk, scattered around the note. Spiderman smirked under his mask.
_______

The next morning Peter apologized to the gang for leaving them like that, and explained his findings, while eating breakfast in the hotel.

„So where is she now? „- Daphne intrigued.

„Probably sipping a juice on an exotic island. It’d be impossible to tell by what alias she bought stocks, and it’d be even harder to prove that she received information from her patient about the deal Oscorp has made.”- Peter commented. The gang remained silent. They were listening to the telly, the news narrating the capture of the new Green Goblin.

„Look Scoobs, we’re famous!”- Shaggy exclaimed as the TV showed the Mystery Inc., holding the Goblin in chains, from last night.

„What a 4th of July!”- Daphne sighed, not disappointedly, but she was tired nonetheless.

„Maybe next we should go on a holiday to an exotic place!”- Shaggy suggested.

„In any case, we have to check out of the hotel in the afternoon.”- Velma said.

„And I have to go to work soon. J.J will kill me if I don’t deliver him some great pictures. Can I take one of you, heroes?”- Peter asked from the gang. Shaggy, Fred, Daphne, Velma, Mary Jane and Scooby were taken a group picture of, with broad smiles on their faces.

It was time to say goodbye.

„Thank you again for coming, it was great to see you guys!”- Mary Jane hugged Daphne and the others. „I hope you didn’t regret coming, despite all the trouble. I’m sorry you had to end up in danger again.”

„It was nothing, we are tough.”- Scooby boasted, showing off his muscles. Everyone was laughing. Peter shook hands again with the gang, for the last time.

„You really are terrific detectives. Thank you for your help!”- Peter said.

„Please tell Spiderman what an honor it was to work together with him!”- Fred asked.

„I’m sure he knows.”- Peter winked.

„Hey, something is on your shoulder!”- Shaggy said, and was about to dust Peter’s clothes, but when he saw it was just a little spider, he freaked out.

„Yikes, a monster!”- he cried.

„Come on Shag, it’s just a spider!”- Fred shook his head. The little spider jumped onto Scooby’s nose, who sneezed, and the spider fell onto the food of a guest next table. The woman screamed, and demanded her dishes to be changed.

„I think it’s better if we leave before we cause even more commotion.”- Velma sighed.

„Sorryyyy.”- Scooby apologized.

„Spiders seem to like you Peter.”- Fred said, with suspicion in his voice.

„Well, what can I say. I hang out with Spiderman after all.”- he laughed embarrasedly. „I’ve got to go now! See you guys!”- Peter said, and backed out of the dining hall, waving.

„He is always in a hurry!”- Daphne remarked.

„That’s Peter for you!”- MJ apologized.

„It’s alright. Let’s get ready too, gang.”- Fred told the others, and they said good bye to Mary Jane once again.

„These are my real heroes! See, Robbie, we don’t need Spiderman, as long as we have young and conscious fellows like these five. A dog, a nerd, a barbie doll, a pimp, and a skeleton.”- J.J. Jameson told his assistant, after receiving the pictures taken by Peter Parker, whose identity remained unknown for the gang, albeit Velma and especially Fred, couldn’t help but feel that Peter might be more than just the photographer of the Webslinger.

On the way out of the city, the Mystery Machine was slowly eating the distance on the Brooklyn Bridge. The sun was already setting, its red rays mixing with the white- blue sky, reminding of the US’s national flag. Suddenly some cars started tooting. Spiderman was swaying airborne, his red-blue suit merging with the colors of the background he ’stepped’ out of. When he reached the Mystery Machine, he waved at the gang, and threw some Scooby snacks to Scooby, who caught them with his jaws. It only lasted for a second, and Spiderman proceeded on. Crime is not waiting for the good guys to arrive. The Big Apple is being devoured by worms- some of which get caught in a spiderweb, but some of them are too big for the web to hold captive. Such is the struggle between the species of the concrete jungle’s fauna. Just like the struggle between light and darkness over the metropolis. A mixture of good and evil: a cycle that never ends. A cycle called life. New York was alive. Corrupt, but living, the Sun being its heart- as long as it rises and sets, there is hope that heroes will emerge. Emerge, then sink in the trashbin called history- just like the disk of the Sun sank under the horizon once more.

Night fell on the city.

The Mystery Solving :-

I liked that this story was short and the detail was about right. Your Previous story which was long and the catching of the perpetrator and the solving of the mystery seemed a bit iffy and rushed to me. However that was not present in this story. The catching of the perpetrator was realistic just like one would expect it to be in the real Scooby Doo story with the addition of Spiderman. Now that scene had some nice comedy but I liked how you merged Spiderman into the antics of Scooby Doo and his gang. I felt like it was pretty close to the Scooby Doo scenes and it kinda brought those old memories back. On that note, I can see a vast improvement from your story that I read previously and this one.

Another good thing is that the mystery's mechanics shown are simple (I still need to read the last chapter some more times to figure some little bits out) and not complicated in many Mystery Stories that I have read (When the Mystery becomes to complicated, you just drop the story). So, I would say the Mystery was simple, had a nice conclusion and a good setup to the sequel story.

Symbolism :-

I noticed three main symbols : 1) The Spiders, 2) The Worm and The Apple and 3) The Sun.

I liked how the symbols were consistently used from beginning to end; Unlike your previous story where you only used the symbols once at the beginning and then no more. The symbols have some solid basis behind them and solving their meaning is like another mystery to the reader ! However here's my meaning of the symbols :-

1) The Spiders - This is the easiest to solve, the spiders continuously hint to the true identity of Spiderman who is Peter Parker. While Fred gets many clues to Peter's identity through the Spiders, it's funny how none of the Gang is able to find out his true identity except for Scooby Doo (Truly a main Star!).

The Spiders give some depth to Peter's character as Spiderman being a mystery in himself means your story focus on him will be less and more on the Mystery Gang (Which you did and it is a very great Plus Point of the story).

2) The Worm and the Apple - This one is hard to solve. Normally it represents how corruption is destroying the society. But I found a hidden meaning : The Apple is a food, and with so many Food References littered around the story, I couldn't help but fell that the Bad Guys (The Worms) are eating up all the Food (The Apple). And this of course is enough inspiration for Scooby Doo to stop them no matter what. "Food is Everything !" :Sparks:
Another nice comic touch.

3) The Sun - This one is also not hard to solve, the sun setting and rising shows the eternal battle between Good and Evil. However you using the Word "Sun Disk" continuously reminded me of Soccer Disks : . I wondered whether Good and Evil were just playing a nice and cosy game with each other (It makes me chuckle when I think that).

The Conversations :-

There are many Conversations in this story between people, after all it's a mystery story and characters need to converse with others in order to get clues. What is good that all the conversations are realistic. They are not rushed, new characters are not just thrown in the conversation but instead enter smoothly. The comedic touches that you include in the conversations are also pretty good.

All in all a truly spectacular and awesome story. :bdpf:

Anyways, I think I will conclude with some of my favorite lines in the story :-

Chapter - 1

„Great power goes with great responsibility.”- Peter quietly murmured.

„What did you say, Peter?”- Mary Jane turned to her man.

„Oh nothing, I was just reminded of something an even greater hero said once.”

„An even greater hero than Spiderman? „ –Daphne wondered.

„Yes.”- Peter answered abruptly. He looked annoyed.

„Wow, I wish I could meet the person. Who was he?”- Daphne inquired.

„It’s impossible now.”- Peter’s countenance turned sad.
That reference to his Uncle.

Scooby was looking out of the window, when suddenly he escaped under the king size bed, whining.

„What’s wrong, Scooby?”- Fred asked astonished.

„G-g-ghost!”

„What ghost, Scoobs?”- Shaggy furthered.

„Yellow eyes!”- Scooby was pointing towards the window. Fred walked to the window and looked out. There was nothing out there, just the blurry picture of the metropolis broken on the drops of rain, that were glistening in the lights of the city lamps.

„Scooby, the ’yellow eyes’ you’ve seen, are probably just the lamps’ rays playing with the raindrops, and playing tricks on your mind!”- Fred said.

Scooby slowly crawled out from under the bed. „Hi-hi-hi.”- he barked, with ease in his doggy voice.
Ahh, that Ghost reference which we always see in Scooby Doo shows. As usual the Gang ignores Scooby Doo's reactions.

Chapter - 2 :-

„Re-write the article, that’s my final word!”- yelled J.J, and Robbie waltzed out of the office. Before closing the door behind himself, he peeped in, and said: „By the way, your wife is on the line.”

J.J took the cigar out of his mouth and threw it at the door, but Robbie, anticipating such reaction, had already shunned the door, so the cigar missed, and fell on the floor.

„Damn that Spiderman! It’s his fault as well!”- J.J groaned to himself.
A Nice dodge indeed.

Chapter - 3 :-

The police soon arrived, closing down the area. The gang helped cleaning up, and taking care of children till their parents found them.

„So much for free food.”- Shaggy sighed, once the haste was over.

„Not that again!”- Daphne, Velma and Fred yelled at him in synchron.
Lol Worthy. :lol

Note : In my opinion that bolded word kinda dilutes the joke. Perhaps you could use a better word ?

„I’m sorry for being late to the party.”- Spiderman said, waving towards Harry.

„You were not invited!”- the Goblin groaned, and charged at Spiderman.
Another Comic moment. Bold : I think "Shouted" would be a better word as it would give a Rage Felling and make the scene more funny.

Realistic, Hilarious and what would you expect in the real Scooby Doo Shows. On that note this Capture scene was far better than the one I read in your previous story.

A funny scene cause Velma was bested by Peter.

The Mystery Solving :-

I liked that this story was short and the detail was about right. Your Previous story which was long and the catching of the perpetrator and the solving of the mystery seemed a bit iffy and rushed to me.
Thanks but this is the longest, actually xd It's 30 pages in Word.

And I'm not sure which one do you mean by the previous story. The previous one was Requiem, set in Romania (I even made a reference to it in this story :p) , and that is less than half of the length of this one. The second story was the one with the werewolf, to which you also wrote a review (thanks again). Now that was longer, 22 Word pages- but still shorter than this crossover story. Now it's true, though, I guess, that this one had more convos, so maybe that gave you the impression that this is shorter.

I agree though that the previous conclusions of the mysteries were not thaaat realistic, or at least I couldn't catch the atmosphere of being realistic. However, I think that the angered mob in the werewolf story was not that off, albeit it was not really the typical Scooby Doo Show ending...But maybe the closest episode in regard of the aspect of an angered mob being involved, is the one with a witch...can't remember the title, but a young girl and her family are accused of being witches because their ancestor was also a witch. If I'm not mistaken, that episode took place in Salem, which is an ovious reference to the Salem witch trials. Also, in the werewolf story, Shaggy's uncle actually disappears in the end.

As for the Requiem's ending, I think the apprehension of the perpetrator was quite similar to those in the Show.

Anyway, while it's true that my stories are based off the original show, I'd like to move past that, and I'd like people to realize that I'm trying to create something new from the great idea that is Scooby Doo. The original show, let's be honest, was addressed at kids. Sure, kids like ghosts, zombies, monsters and stuff, but for most of the times, these monsters were anything but scary, and their entrapping was anything but realistic. Actually, the original show received much criticism, the harshest ones saying that animation was lame, the humor was not even funny, and the mystery was anything but surprising. Any case, the original show was focuing more on the comedy side, and the patterns of the mystery and the investigation were almost always the same.

Now, I'd like to outgrow the cradle from which my stories were born. Of course the characters will be the same (the 'gang'), and of course the will be mysteries involved, but I'd like them to be darker and more twisted. I'd like to focus more on the horror side, instead of the comedy side. But of course Scooby Doo's character guarantees some fun so it's not like I'd totally leave that out. It's not like I'd make an Inspector Rex out of Scooby xd But we are talking about a great dane here, with a good nose- which he is willing to use for some Scooby snacks. There is more potential in Scooby than just that idiotic puppy some think he is.

If you watched the original show, albeit the animation was indeed lame, in some episodes, the atmosphere was still pretty dark. That's what I'd like to capture by adding these dark prologues, epilogues, and descriptions. But, there is always a ray of hope. The gang itself is that ray: that mysteries can be solved, the good can win. However, if I want to be realistic...if you and the readers want realistic stories, then we have to acknowledge that's not always the case. Even Sherlock Holmes had some unfinished mysteries- which doesn't devaluate his genius: it just shows that Sherlock Holmes is human after all. Mystery Inc and the gang are just kids too. In this story, I was trying to emphasize that. Note that they were very enthusiastic. They were warned even by Peter, but they still insisted on investigating.

Peter cautioning them about 'this mystery might be bigger than all of us together' and 'the balance between good and bad folks in this city is very delicate' :was an indication that sometimes things are not as simple as some kids rushing in and catch the big fish. Remember how they were bragging about solving mysteries before. Yet, they couldn't really figure this one out on their own. Now of course this was a cross over story, so I couldn't make the gang be the only one to solve the mystery: of course they needed Spiderman. And tbh, without Spiderman, they would have died...Also, Wilson Fisk, as always, got away. Only a small fish: the lawyer was caught. His person is also a symbol of how a servant of the law can be corrupted. Another important person is Dr. Kafka: a scientist...a doctor...yet, she also abused her skills and used them for her own interests. He got info out of her patient (Norman Osborn), and bought Oscorp stocks and disappeared. She was not a criminal , but 'gold' has corrupted her as well. I also added her disappearance as a twist to the ending, just to surprise the reader :p

Spiderman is part of this delicate system: he is kinda the good guy, but still not...'I must decide which is right- society or I'. This is a real quote from a real play. I used it coz I thought it fits Spiderman's role perfectly. Mary Jane says these words only as an actress- but Spiderman really lives a double life, not just on stage. Spiderman has to do things on his own. Sometimes he breaks the law, but that's his choice. Also, noone in this corrupt Big Apple is innocent. Guilt plays an important role in the perosonality of Peter/Spiderman: his guilt for the death of his uncle. It's this rotten apple into which a ray of hope shines in in the form of the gang: they are the innocent kids from outside the city. That's why J.J calls them the real heroes...more precisely that's why I put those words in his mouth.
Actually, Harry Osborn and J.J describing the gang members as a dog, a nerd (Velma), a barbie doll (Daphne), a pimp (Fred) and a skeleton (Shaggy) were supposed to be funny...xd But more importantly, it means anyone can be a hero. Note the July 4 reference to the American heroes who gained independence for the US. Of course Spiderman is kind of a hero too, but he is not considered so by everyone. Note that Kingpin knows who Spiderman is, yet he lets Spiderman do his own business. As long as Kingpin can get away with his crimes, he doesn't mind Spiderman catching the small fish. That's why Kingpin informed (somehow) Spiderman to go to Oscorp that night. Anyway I left some questions open on purpose. Peter winking that much of his narration may be just an assumption: means that maybe that's not how it happened ;) Or, Peter just didn't want to reveal to the gang that he is Spiderman. Actually I was thinking a lot about whether the gang should figure out his identity or not, or whether he should share his secret with the gang or not. I decided not to. They are left with suspicion. The reader is left with the chance to come up with his/her own interpretations.

Oh and btw I actually threw in some misleading clues so that it would be hard to figure out for the reader that the new Goblin is the lawyer. It was when the Goblin told Harry that "I am your father" (it's a Dart Vader quote btw xd). The Goblin was obviously lying to manipulate Harry so that he would give him the real serum.

Thanks

Actually I wrote the first two pages a year ago, but I dropped the story as I couldn't come up with a good idea for the solving of the mystery. I picked it up again 2-3 months ago and gave it a lot of thought. I took notes, I noted down the steps and the clues...etc.

And yeah I tried writing it in a way that they could actually make an episode out of it if they wanted to xd There are those eps you know when Scooby Doo meets celebrities. Mostly celebrities from the 1950/60/70s. This story also takes place somewhere around 1979-80. The oil crises of 1973 and 1979 were real events. The crime stats about NY were from wikipedia xd

Well I still think the idea of insider trading and dealing with stocks was a bit more complicated than Shaggy's uncle trying to chase people away from their homes because there is a tunnel under their house leading to the old gold mines :p

Well that's right, there were symbols but of course I leave that up to the reader to interpret them :p

In general, though, the fauna was humans, symbolized by animals: rats, spiders, worms- and Scooby is a dog :p

The flora was the buildings and in general the artificial environment: oil, chemicals, fireworks.

It was a criticism of the consumer society too.

:bdpf:
Yeah I tried to imagine myself in the place of the characters and that's how I formed the convos.

For example if I were Peter, reminded about my old friend whom I lost contact with.

Or, I'm walking outside of a theatre, and a brick fells on the ground right next to me, almost killing me and I look up.

Ahh, that Ghost reference which we always see in Scooby Doo shows. As usual the Gang ignores Scooby Doo's reactions.
This actually could have 2 interpretations too.

- Scooby saw teh Green Goblin who was checking on the gang
- Scooby was just confused by the play of the rays on the raindrops

Note : In my opinion that bolded word kinda dilutes the joke. Perhaps you could use a better word ?
Well, at another place I use 'in chorus', which is another greek word and means the same. In chorus or in synchron mean 'at the same time'- but I don't like repeating words if not necessary so I used synchron here.

Another Comic moment. Bold : I think "Shouted" would be a better word as it would give a Rage Felling and make the scene more funny.
But I imagine the Goblin being more annoyed than enraged.

Anyway, my favourites are Harry Osborn and J.J describing the gang in the same way, but Harry in a negative way, whiel J.J in a positive context (at least in his comparison, comparing the gang to Spiderman).

If you saw teh original Spiderman movies by Sam Raimi, then you'll notice that this J.J is based off the J.J in those movies. Throwing a tantrum and blaming Spiderman xd

Scooby sneezing and the little spider falling on the food of a guest in the hotel is supposed to be funny as in the original show, whenever Scooby interacts with a real animal.

Spiderman saying 'I'm green with envy'- a taunting play of words (green with envy- green goblin).
