this question came up during my english class and there was one heck of a debate over it

I believe that certain events are destined to happen. Not the exact event at an exact time, but a certain outcome will happen. For instance, let's say i'm destined to marry lindsay. Maybe i meet her tomorrow, or i meet her in 9 years. Either way, in the end i believe that we will be married no matter what the path is to get there. However i don't believe that people are born inherently good or evil, as there would be no need for heaven or hell if we have no free will in choice.

In that case: I think that we have the ability to make our own choices(free will), but sometimes those choices seem to be preordained.

The thing that started all this was a question my teacher asked my class, we read this little story he made up, and at the end the main character (john) went to jail, Then my teacher question was, Was it John's fate to go to jail or was it his actions that led him to this path. Most of my classmates said it was his actions including me, but then my teacher says this that left me puzzled,"what if Johns decisions were part of his fate" and thats when the Big debate went off

We read a story about a man who believed he was fated to marry this woman. She told him that was impossible so he proposed a test. He chose to lay on a set of train tracks and said that if he survived she would marry him. She accepted and so he did. As the train approached there was enough time for the conductor to stop the train and so they were married. Do you think they were destined to marry, or do you think that this was just another part of life. Is it fated for you to stub and break your toe so you meet your soul mate in the ER? Maybe. Nobody knows.

But i still maintain, that if fate exists, and free will does not, there is no need for (or it is unfair to have) heaven and hell seeing as how only some divine being could create this fate.
