Kishimoto gave Hinata a compelling reason to be in love with Naruto. Sakura on the other hand lacks a compelling reason for why she is so infatuated with Sasuke, that she's willing to overlook his attempts to kill her. So I believe Hinata is a better written and more relatable character.

I would think there are two reason why people support NarutoxSakura. One it would in the eyes of many make Sakura a more relatable character if she dropped Sasuke and fell in love with Naruto. But most importantly I think it's because Naruto is in love with Sakura and hasn't shown the same affection for Hinata. So people think at the end of the story after Naruto has done so much for the world, he deserves to be with the girl he truly loves, rather than being rejected and ending up with Hinata as his secondary choice.

There is so much information that can back up both theories. I personally am hoping for NarutoXHinata.. And I feel Naruto has grown up, I mean he knew Sakura was lying when she said she loved him.
