Also, the being that shusui's eye was in was also ALIVE.. and could keep the sharingan active..

Itachi was alive when he prepared the jutsu, just like Madara was. They were both dead once the Genjutsu went into effect.

Madara didn't activate it while he was dead lols. He programmed it before he died to activate after a certain amount of time had passed.

He just went up against one of the strongest then had to deal 4 enemies all stronger than captains. Also he didnt use all his power.

Madara set up Izanagi when he was alive to go off once he was dead for some time.
Itachi set up Amaterasu when he was alive and it activated after he was dead. It's practically the same thing.
This concept is not that hard to understand. He'll even Danzo did something similar with his Reverse seal.
