Cars will be banned from London and all other cities across Europe under a draconian EU masterplan to cut CO2 emissions by 60 per cent over the next 40 years.

The European Commission on Monday unveiled a "single European transport area" aimed at enforcing "a profound shift in transport patterns for passengers" by 2050.

The plan also envisages an end to cheap holiday flights from Britain to southern Europe with a target that over 50 per cent of all journeys above 186 miles should be by rail.

Top of the EU's list to cut climate change emissions is a target of "zero" for the number of petrol and diesel-driven cars and lorries in the EU's future cities.

Siim Kallas, the EU transport commission, insisted that Brussels directives and new taxation of fuel would be used to force people out of their cars and onto "alternative" means of transport.

"That means no more conventionally fuelled cars in our city centres," he said. "Action will follow, legislation, real action to change behaviour."
What do you guys think?

It could work and is needed in bigger cities. In my city it's cheaper to drive my own car than with bus so somethings need to be done.

Its not practical to ban cars however strong the rail/sub system is. I've been to England several times and while not that many people travel in London by car its not feasible to ban it. It seems socialistic, and if the idea is to save the environment, then by 2050 i'm sure there would be next to zero emission automobiles developed by someone. People have a right to private transport.

The production of cars with less emission (hybrid) are worser for the environment than the production of normal cars. So it doesn't really make a difference. Accept for the fuel offcourse.

No cars in the city by 2050....it doesn't sound realistic.

Are you crazy? O_O nearly everyone drives a car to work, school... etc.

If cars were banned, yes there would be a loss of CO2 but also a loss in sales, jobs, and so forth. Not something we need right now but who knows where we will be in 40 years but I find this a little bogus... A ban on all cars? Maybe they plan to roll out thousands of electric cars perhaps but the ban seems a step too far. The underground system is bad enough with car-less people, It would be hell if no one had a car =/ It would take millions, maybe even billions to expand the system to accommodate for like what? 7.5 million people and growing...

Or maybe we will see millions of people hop on bikes and ride through the mazes of london streets for x amount of miles day in day out :p

Yeah gats is right london is full of cars and tbh i hate it, anyway a ban on cars would be good i meen if they improve public transport majourly it could work, for examples there's a carribean island think its the bahamas, they banned cars and everyone rides round in mopeds or the trams. But the other carribean ilsands cant do things as such as they are placed in a mountainous regien. But urban cities hve not much mountains so trams would work well with them usualy coming every 5 minutes into other urban areas and streets

You're comparing the bahamas' to London? london has over 7 million people in it whereas the bahamas, according to wikipedia, doesn't even have half a million people with an area of 13,878 km2, in comparison to london's 607 sq mi. I'm not even going to do the math... As you can see, london has 6.5million more people in it and in such a small region.

Imagine that many people going onto the railway per day... It would be mental and I doubt everyone will be cycling their way through london, as much as it is eco-friendly.

And like I said earlier, expanding or creating a new transportation system to accommodate everyone would cost millions, money that we don't have right now thanks to the recession.

okay maybe the bahamas was a bad comparison but maybe a place like Curitiba in brazil, they're public transport is realy one of the best in every street there can be found dedicated bus lanes , these buses save around 27 million auto trips per year, saving about 27 million liters of fuel annually and the buses taking around 1.3 million passengers per day, now im not saying that this could solve the problem of no cars but it certainly helps if we had such as bus sytem. Anyway i dont completly agree with cars being banned but as a city it would make the place look neater however selfish that sounds lol

Maybe Everyone will have Private Planes or Helicopters or the "Flying Cars" are not in category of "Cars" or maybe Today's "Cars" will be called "Kars" by 2050 and Hence will be allowed.

Interesting, but I dont see it happening. Why don't they impose rolling blackouts while they are at it, since electricity Generation is a leading cause of CO2 emissions as well (at least in the US). Even with the eco-friendly electric cars, you still have to power them with electricity which means more consumption, which leads to more generation, and then more emissions.

they should probably be focusing on developing more sources of renewable energy (wind farms, and solar farms).

90 % of expat students studying in london don't ( sry, my bad, that's the group of people i know over there).

Or we'll finally get around to making flying cars U_U
Actually i heard NASA were making a prototype flying car so who knows...
