Here's the short version:
Employers are now asking potential new hires to "voluntarily" open their facebook and other social media accounts, and go through their pictures, messages, etc. while the employer "shoulder surfs". Being "voluntary", the employers can't force you to agree to this--but then there is no guarantee that they won't hire you if you say no(since you can't prove it).
Government agencies are starting to make this mandatory--which I can understand to a point(if you are applying for a job that requires a security clearance). The problem is, many non-governmental employers are starting to do this as well. This is a blatant over-stepping of boundaries as the information on your page is still, technically, personal information--and should be private.
...of course that is impossible with facebook and google anyway...
