You always have to start with the most basic things, and once mastered, advance to the another lvl -.-

Earth style is to me like you can control the ground trees and mores things like nature things like Plants. Earth style allow the user to manipulate the surrounding earth for offensive and defensive purposes. Earth style allows the user to travel through ground and rock in various ways.

It's true you need to know earth manipulation to control trees and plants but that is a combination between two elements (doton+suiton=Mokuton).
Knowing earth style makes you able to control all earth on the field to your liking.
Also, earth is weak against lightning element and strong against water element.
Earth element is very good for defense, but it can have a good offense too. You can combine it with a water jutsu to make mud or with a fire jutsu to make lava. Any questions?
