Chapter 4:Taking flight
I had been captain for a good twenty years. Soldiers came and went, some were transfered and a few deserted, but most died honorably in battle. It was an unfortunate day when my Luitenent was killed on what was supposed to be an easy mission. He was sent to the human world to do a few rounds in our district. On a routine hollow slaying, he was ambushed by a menos grande. He managed to slay the beast, but it cost him his life. We mourned him for quite some time.
The question of my Luitenent naturally came up a little while after the funeral. I had some difficulty picking a new Luitenent. Though there were many possible applicants, none of them were overly appealing to me. I had all but given up as I continued my duties to the squad.
Then as I was about to buckle, the third seat rushed into my office.
"Forgive me sir, but it seemed one of the records from the soul reapers acadamy got mixed in with squad 7's paperwork by mistake," He said as he handed my the file and excused himself. I was not expecting much from it, considering the other ten possible options. I opened the file and out first the picture of the applicant. She was a tall thin girl with jet black hair and dull blue eyes. It further intrieged me to see she carried two swords, which was a rarity. I began to disect the paper work, looking at test scores by glance. She was very apt for Zanpakto combat and kido and even had a good grasp on flash step. Then I fixed my eyes on the recomendations list. I sat up as I looked at the signiture of my senior, Retsu Unohana. Finally, I fixed my gaze to the signiture at the bottom.
"Katsume Shiba" the line read. I was taken back.
"This is her? My how she has grown in such short time. Perhaps," I said as I began to ponder silently. I called my third seat back in and instructed him to send the file, as well as a letter of aproval to the Luitenent's council so they could give the final word.

It was a few days earlier that I was informed of the Luitenent's council's decision to allow Miss Shiba to be my Luitenent. It was the following day that I met her for the first time in twenty years. I was surprised by her hight. She outsized me slightly and had a slender frame. I once again noted the twin swords on her uniform.
"Hello, Captain Kuchiki," she said shyly.
"It is good to see you again Katsume. I see you have certainly grown up," I replied.
"Well it has been twenty years captain. I am ready to serve you loyally as your Luitenent, Sir!" she said as she stood at attention. I thought for a moment and looked her over again.
"No, you will not serve as my Luitenent yet," I said after a moment of silence. Her eyes opened wide. She looked at me with an inquisitive look as if unsure of what I said.
"What do you mean captain?"
"True, in terms of the social hierarchy, you are my Luitenent, however I feel I need to test you, and if necessary, hone your skills. You are very young. I want to be sure I won't lose another close soldier."
"Of course captain. I will do anything you ask of me!"
"Very good. Meet me in the barracks training grounds, tomarrow at Dawn. Bring your zanpakto."
