I wish to learn Doton because it appears to be a very versatile element in a battle, versatile in the sense that it can be used as a strong defensive and offensive move. It may have it's weaknesses like any other element, but being one with the earth will surely come in handy in many instances. ^.^

^_^ Amazing response! Extremely honest, and I really enjoyed it. You are indeed correct! Most of the time in RP, people often forget that a battle is only enjoyable and fun when they explore the usage of their jutsus, and with Earth, being such a versatile elements, in your own words, one can possibly make anything happen. After all, think of Earth much like clay, where you can shape it to your needs.
In the RP, your only limit is but your own imagination! Keep that in mind!

Alright, so let's start a bit with the basics. What might be the weaknesses and strengths of Earth and how might you utilize them?

(Before I begin, I'd like to apologize for the late response, and this response time will likely continue until the weekend when I'll have more time to get on, as school has begun again over here.)
--------------------------------------------------------
Earth is weak against lightning, because the lightning would pierce through the earth, cutting or breaking apart it's structure. It is strong against water, because the earth would be able to absorb or disrupt the water or disrupt it's water flow. When using doton as a defensive move, one must be weary of the fact that even if the doton stops the water technique dead on it's tracks, that the water may just flow around the doton structure put up. I believe that this could be prevented by using some sort of doton technique to suppress the water jutsu's flow completely. Moreover, a great advantage for doton is that it is all around us, and one can, in most cases, always rely on it to be ready for the resource as a means for both attack and defense. This is contrasted by the fact that sometimes, other elements may be inaccessible to the user, such as when there is no surrounding water source to utilize water techniques in the battle area. To continue further with the fact that doton is strong against suiton, this may also mean that doton could be an effective element to use in a battle against other similar techniques, an example of this being Ice, as it contains water. Also, this is more of a question, but I've heard that Doton is strong against Dark release, I assume because if the dark release absorbs the doton technique's chakra, the earth matter will still be there.

No problem, take your time, mate. I am busy myself at this time of the year.
Um.
Wow.
Sir, you'll be great at RP...no joke, that is one of the best descriptions I've seen in some time. Let's break it down.
  • When using doton as a defensive move, one must be weary of the fact that even if the doton stops the water technique dead on it's tracks, that the water may just flow around the doton structure put up. You are completely correct, however, the point is to block the initial impact of the water. Moreover, we will learn more about this as we progress through the jutsus.
  • Moreover, a great advantage for doton is that it is all around us, and one can, in most cases, always rely on it to be ready for the resource as a means for both attack and defense. All the jutsus are part of nature, but you are correct. Alongside Wind, Earth is indeed all around us, however, a downside to this is that many of the Earth jutsus become unusable when you are separated from your footing on the ground. We will learn more about this later as well.
  • Also, this is more of a question, but I've heard that Doton is strong against Dark release, I assume because if the dark release absorbs the doton technique's chakra, the earth matter will still be there. To be honest, I have no idea, but you could check the Bio Rules section about Dark Release.
Alright, so, take this rock...*bends down and picks up a normal sized rock from the ground*
Take it within your hands and run your chakra through it. Then tell me how you think Earth chakra might flow.

*A breeze of wind rolls in as I nod nervously and proceed to grasp the sturdy and jagged rock from Kiritsugu-sensei's hand. I clasp the rock gently so that it's resting on both of my palms, and begin to slowly run my chakra through it. As I'm doing this, I close my eyes so as to divert my complete attention towards the task at hand, and, as a the breeze ceases, everything becomes silent. I can feel it, the piece of earth on my palms acting as a medium through which the entire earth speaks through, I begin to understand, that the silence that the earth produces is only reassuring of it's reliability, it's strength. The earth needs not to screech like the deafening sound of lighting, or flow carelessly like the movement of water, it is silent and still, but ready to strike at a moment's notice with an intimidating roar if one is willing to truly understand it. As I gain this knowledge, I open my eyes suddenly and realize, that this is the true embodiment of Earth chakra; flowing with great firmness, durability, consistency and with head-strong persistence. I stop the flow of chakra going into the rock, and calmly place it back onto the earth, returning it from where Kiritsugu-Sensei had initially picked it up. I turn towards Kiritsugu-Sensei and confidently exclaim; "I am ready, sensei." *

Being quite the old guy, I had seen many students pass before me, many to move on and greatly surpass my own abilities. However, having met and seen so many people, it was quite inevitable that one would become quite...so to say, wary and enervated.
But in these small moments, it was when I stumbled across...a jewel in the rough, and it was moments like this, which truly made everything matter.
I have only ever stumbled on several of these treasures. They were quite the rarity. Briefly, the face of a young man named Elementalist flashed across my mind - his expression, his eagerness - all of these easily matched the expression of the student named Mudo before me, who held before him but a simple rock.
But, no, it was not just a rock for him, just like a puddle was not just a puddle for Elementalist...no, it was quite clear he could perceive it, and with clarify, truly understand what it was.
The five elements.
They were not just elements.
They were living, breathing, all around us. Some simply disregard it, but few...few truly learn to attune to it.
"I am ready, sensei." Mudo turned towards me, a look of fascination, yet anticipation splotched across his features, and for just a slight moment, a warm feeling enveloped my heart.
"Great to hear!" I replied earnestly. "Now, don't be so hasty to drop the rock. Pick it back up! We will start from there. As I'm sure you've gotten a good taste of how Earth works, let's start with some basics."
Glancing around me, I hefted a medium sized rock up with a single hand, bouncing it casually within my hand. "Focus your chakra throughout the rock this time, however, be more offensive about it. Seek to shape it into something...anything you wish."
As I finished my instructions, I drew out a scroll, summoning a whiteboard, setting it down upon the ground before me. "After you do that, take this blackboard marker here and tell me what you think the weaknesses and strengths of Earth might be and how one might utilize them appropriately."

(Yes! a teacher that RPs when teaching! :pwease:)

*I nod in accordance and grab the medium sized rock with both of my hands. I then widen my stance slightly, lock my eyes upon the piece of earth, and commence by sending my chakra into it. After several minutes, as I'm doing this with the utmost concentration conceivable, A drop of sweat rolls down my face and crashes down onto the earth beneath me. It is arid, and as the sun's overwhelming heat beats down on the land, I carefully commence molding the jagged rock into a perfect sphere by utilizing my chakra to compress it. "Nearly there..." I mumbled with a slight hint of joy like a mad scientist happily devoted to his craft. Once the rock had completed it's transformation into a sphere, I exhaled calmly, a sigh of relief, placed the spherical rock onto the ground and proceeded to take the blackboard marker in order to commence with my analysis on the Earth element's strength and weaknesses. "Where to begin?" I exclaimed, after several seconds of careful pondering the writer's tool seemed to have taken on a life of it's own as I hastily jotted down a formula that read; " Lightning > Earth > Water ". I looked towards Kiritsugu-Sensei and proceeded to elaborate; "Well, as it's most commonly known, Earth is weakest against lightning release due to the lightning being able to easily break apart the ground, and so, a doton user must always be wary when going up against an enemy that utilizes lightning release." I sit down upon the hot earth beneath me and cross my legs and arms, proceeding to elaborate even more; "Furthermore, the formula that I have written depicts that the Earth element is strongest against the element of Water. This is supported by the fact that the Earth is naturally able to absorb the water like a sponge. A doton user might have an easier time handling an enemy that utilizes water release due to this idea. So, in short, doton users may need to think carefully and outsmart an opponent that utilizes lightning release, as earth cannot compete with lightning head-to head. In addition, the best way for the user to survive would be to not just go on a complete offensive and wait for the perfect moment to execute the appropriate technique on the enemy. Lastly, a doton user has the advantage over an enemy that uses water release and so this may prompt the user to go on the offensive since they have the elemental advantage. That's about all I can come up with, sensei." I slowly get up from the ground and await anxiously for a sign of approval from Kiritsugu-Sensei.*

There is a small moment in certain battles and moments where everything just...freezes, so to speak. A spark of concentration, that very moment where everything stops when you give it everything you have...
A deliberate frown creased Mudo's features as he concentrated with a large amount of willpower on the rock, and as expected, it eventually shaped itself, folding within only to smooth out into the form of a perfect sphere.
Then all the tension in the air seemed to ease itself out as he set the masterpiece on the ground in a gentle manner, striding towards the whiteboard I had set up, pondering for a moment on the empty space before him.
Lighting.
Earth.
Water.
A simple formula, yet it easily demonstrated his basic knowledge of the element. I watched as he seated himself on the rock, answering my questions in a slow, yet thought-out manner.
"Perfect response," I offered as he finished his words, turning to gaze somewhat anxiously at me. "Every single one of your words are indeed correct. Firstly, Earth does indeed absorb Water. Keep in mind that Water takes on whatever shape its container is. As Earth is solid, and as you have learned before, can be easily manipulated like clay, you can easily use that to your advantage.
Lightning is wild, so I definitely advise caution when you're up against Lightning users. Remember that many of the Earth techniques require your contact with the ground."
I gestured a single hand at that rock. "So, Earth is one of my favorite elements," I began. "It allows for creativity. Pick that rock back up and I want you this time to concentrate on forming it into something offensive. When you are done, find another rock and create something defensive as well."
Shrugging, I sat back down on my rock. "Remember, you can create anything. Nothing but your own imagination and wits will benefit you the most in battles."

* "I understand." my response to the crucial information that had just been handed down to me. It was past noon and the sun had begun to disappear as the sky had become blanketed with dark and foreboding clouds. I felt calm as I realized this, the environment had now seemed to have become completely still as if it had fallen into slumber. I proceeded to pick up the spherical rock structure that I had crafted earlier, closed my eyes, and began to send my chakra into it. As I'm doing this, I had begun to feel several droplets of water fall upon my hair and my body, the sound of the drips increasing around me shortly after the sound manifesting itself into visual droplets upon the opening of my eyes. I continued on with my task, the rock slowly being thinned out and sharpened, all in accordance to my will. The hilt then proceed to take shape, followed by the guard. This was truly a beautiful sight to behold; the rock taking the shape of a short sword before me, as if the Earth itself had understood the need for a deadly weapon, my need for a deadly weapon. Once the rock had entirely turned into the sword, I proceeded to swing it around quickly and with precision in order to get a feeling for the weapon, and once I had done this to assure of it's reliability I then carefully placed the weapon on the ground. "Now on to the next!" I exclaimed with an exhausting but cheerful tone. I then moved towards a slightly larger piece of rock, as the light drizzle of rain continued to patter down upon the now cool earth beneath me. I placed my hands on the rock, and steadily sent my chakra into it with the intention of forging a shield, roughly the size of my entire upper body. The rock thinned and thickened, shaping itself to my specifications, ending the process by the formation of the grip. Once I had finished I grasped the shield and placed it next to the short sword that I had created earlier. "This is probably as basic as it gets when it comes to offensive and defensive weapons, but there's a reason why they're not considered obsolete at this point in time, correct?" I inquired. The light rain now halted, as the clouds had moved on and the sun began to come out of hiding, introducing the warm rays of the sun to me and my Sensei once again.*

Surprisingly, I felt a light breeze pass through the place as the rain began falling lightly on the surroundings. For a moment, a look of fascination passed my face as the unexpected, amazing weather fell before me.
Rain. A literate aspect that I would forever appreciate. Such a rarity where I normally lived...
As soon as my thoughts had wandered off, I realized that Mudo had created before me a sword of earth, magnificent and simple, yet durable as he swung it around for me, the wind echoing the power of his move.
But he didn't rest. "Now on to the next!"
And like a knight in shining armor, a perfect shield was created from his grasp, created to his speculations. Placing them down before him as a showcase, he turned to me with another question.
"This is probably as basic as it gets when it comes to offensive and defensive weapons, but there's a reason why they're not considered obsolete at this point in time, correct?"
"Of course not," I responded easily as the warmth of the sun once again fell upon my face. "You see, even I carry with me a sword at all times." I tapped the sturdy hilt the sword strapped upon my belt. "There are a lot you can do with a blade. It has an art of its own."
Standing up from my rock, I stretched a bit just before I placed my hands together, forming the Tiger handseal. From about mid range from Mudo, a clone looking exactly like me appeared.
"Lay your eyes upon my clone and judge the distance," I instructed. "Short range is 0-5 meters, mid range is 5-10, and long range is 10-15. Note that he is about 8 meters away from you."
With a single hand, I pointed at the ground. "I want you to dive fully into the Earth Element now. For this next jutsu, I want you to send your Earth chakra within yourself and then become one with the Earth by sinking fully into it."
I raised the hand towards my clone in the distance. "Once you have, I will then place my clone on the place where you were originally. Then stick your hands out of the Earth, grab my clone around his legs, and then pull him deep into the Earth while pulling yourself out at the exact moment."

* "'I'll try my best!" I stated as I began to assimilate doton chakra, dispersing it evenly across my entire body. I locked eyes upon the clone about 8 meters away from me menacingly, and once I had gathered enough chakra I then continued by slowly melding myself within the earth beneath me. Once I was fully submerged, the clone walked over towards my initial location in an emotionless manner, and once it had stopped to where it was right below me, I lifted both of my hands up slowly and grasped both of the clone's calf muscles tightly. Immediately, I pulled the clone downwards hastily as if it were being dragged into the darkest depths of the underworld and once the clone, in it's entirety, had become submerged, I instantly pulled myself back onto the ground above me. I stumbled slightly as I landed from the jump that I had done, and as I did this a faint "poof" noise emanated from within the ground, assuring me of the clone's dispersion. "I did it!" I declared proudly towards Kiritsugu-sensei, "But, does this jutsu require that I wait until my enemy comes toward my location when I'm underground or may I travel toward them underground and then proceed to execute the technique?" I questioned, now walking up towards Kiritsugu-sensei in order to properly hear his response.*

I smiled, always caught off-guard by the intelligence of Mudo as he questioned his concerns. "Well, to answer that," I responded. "You will soon learn a technique that would assist you in doing so, in more ways than one."
Casting a gaze at the curious objects Mudo made earlier, I picked up the sword, handing it back to him. "Now, this next jutsu uses a similar concept to the very first jutsu we learned," I informed him. "Mold this sword in the exact same way as you did in its previous form, a rock, into the shape of a staff."
Having trained many people, I was not without preparations. Digging into the pack that I had brought along with me to the training grounds, I brought out a dummy, a rather rudely crafted piece of paper with a stick attached on the back to stick into the ground. Upon the middle of it was an inscribed red circle.
Calculating about ten meters from Mudo, I stabbed it within the earth, gesturing a hand at it. "Throw that staff at this target! If you miss the first time, it is fine, you can create more!" Walking back towards him, away from the path of the target, I continued my words. "However, it is important to keep in mind which hand you throw it with and how you aim it."

*I grasp the sword that I had created from Kiritsugu-sensei's hand and as he completed his request for me I nodded in agreement. I then proceeded to send my doton chakra into the sword, thinning it out slowly and carefully so as to evenly distribute everything neatly. I took a quick gaze at the target that had been designated to me, realizing just how much distance the weapon had to cover to make contact with it, and continued to shape the spear accordingly. Once the piece of earth had now been completely turned into a spear, I then took a more balanced stance, locked eyes upon the target in front of me. Deciding that I would pierce the target's chest area, I yanked my right arm backwards quickly and in one motion with incredible strength, sent the weapon soaring into the air. The spear sung towards it's destination hastily and makes contact with the dummy in the right section of it's chest, the sharp edge of it having been sunk into about 4 inches of the target. "This technique would prove difficult to make contact with the enemy if they were moving quickly" I assumed, "On the other hand, if this jutsu does make contact then it would inflict a decent amount of damage, in addition to depending on the location in which the enemy was pierced in. It has a very far range, though." Taking note of the distance that the weapon had covered. I walked towards the dummy and once I had reached it, began to examine it thoroughly, noticing the effects of how gravity and wind change the trajectory of the projectile. "How fast may one be able to produce and launch these at the enemy in quick succession during a battle?" I questioned, still examining the dummies wound closely.*

Eyes following the perfect trajectory of the weapon, I breathed a sigh of amusement as it struck its target, dead on. Without Wind resistance, the heavy, yet durable staff, caused quite the amount of damage.
"You should have learned much about aiming and control of your weapons in Ninja Academy," I stated. "But as we are ninjas, we carry such tools with us around at all times. Kunai, Explosive Tags, Shuriken...all of these, are always handy to use in my pocket." With a single hand, I patted the pouch strapped by my side.
"But, of course, you bring up a good point. Naturally put, gravity and fiction plays a huge role in such situations. Close range combat would mean more force and more quicker moves. The longer an attack travels, the more friction affects it, thus, it would be weakened most likely before it reaches its target."
With a single handseal, I caused a flame of fire to burst up from the ground, enveloping the dummy within its glory, turning it back into ashes. "As of how fast you may be able to do this, it is up to you personally. Logically speaking, perhaps about less than a second to form the staff, but as of the aim, and such, that is completely the user's decision. You can also form more than one staff at a time."
After finishing my words, I formed the Tiger handseal, creating a single clone. "Now, you will find my shadow clones handy in this exercise. This next one is simple. Focus Doton chakra into your arms and then release it in the shape of rocks. Take those rocks and throw them at my clone. Much like stoning, yes."

*I position myself so that I am about 4 meters away from the clone, and begin to assimilate my doton chakra into my dominant, right hand carefully. The sun shining brightly, as a slight breeze once again began to roll in, I released the chakra once I had gathered enough, using shape manipulation in order to create a group of small but dense rocks covering my entire palm. I then put all but one of the rocks into my left hand, so that I could aim better with the single piece, and launched it at the clone, striking it's face. Once I had done this I upped the speed slightly, hastily grabbing one rock from my left palm and throwing it at the clone, most of which making contact with it's upper body. As I threw the final rock at the clone, this one striking at it's shoulder with a considerable amount of force, the clone dispersed with a "poof" noise. I bent over slightly, resting my palms on my knees, panting slightly attempting to catch my breath due to the speed and force that I had launched the rocks with. Once I had caught my breath I began to make my way back towards Kiritsugu-Sensei, exclaiming, "I don't see how this could be very effective in a battle, although the stones may be created and launched in quick succession, I find it hard to believe that they could seriously injure the enemy. Is this exercise just meant as a precursor to an advanced version of this technique that I will learn later?" I questioned.*

"Well, that might not be it," I replied smoothly, slightly chuckling at Mudo's efforts. It wasn't every day where one could imitate an act from my younger days. I wasn't quite sure where such a technique had been born from, but it was taught to me as a basic, and I could remember pitching the rocks that I had created at random obstacles when I had been but a child. "I suppose this jutsu is up to you to fully utilize it's creativity. After all, rocks can do many things. Distraction, perhaps..."
My mind wandered off once more as I created yet another clone for Mudo's pleasure. "This next one introduces a basic concept which we will go over in detail more later. It's quite simple." Forming the Rat handseal, I showed it to Mudo. "Simply place your hands in such a manner for this handseal, and then send your chakra into the earth below. Form two huge sections of earth that will then come up and crush my clone in between it."

* "Right." I responded with a serious countenance. I stepped back several meters and fixated myself upon the clone, as the bright sun shone and the wind scurried by in what seemed to be a hurry. I performed the Rat hand seal that Kiritsugu-sensei had shown me and began to send my doton chakra into the ground. I recalled of the short description that Kiritsugu-sensei had told me about this technique, of how the two sections of earth must come up and crush the clone mercilessly, and began to allow this slight feeling of both excitement and blood lust to envelop me. I pictured the sections rising up in a square like column around the clone's right and left sides, beginning to notice this actually unfold before me only seconds afterwards. I then quickly sent the two columns racing towards the clone and upon contact, the clone was completely crushed by the two pieces of earth. The clone then disperses with a "Poof" noise as I exhale in relief. "I think this technique could best be used if the enemy were to be ensnared in some type of way so as to reduce the chance of them escaping."*

"Perfect!" I responded. "Short range is 0-5 meters, mid is 5-15 meters, and long is 15-25. This jutsu is able to go up to long, so you can actually do a lot more with this jutsu rather than just crashing your opponent. By creating huge pieces of rocks, you can basically have a good control of the battlefield. Like I said, Earth allows for creativity, so the only limit is your own imagination and chakra, of course." I clapped whole heartedly. "For this next jutsu, it would require some concentration as you did for the earth-sinking one earlier. Begin by channeling your chakra into the earth around you and as you do so, change the chakra within the earth from hard to soft. This will then allow you to dig into the earth."
Forming the Tiger handseal, a shadow clone was created about mid range from Mudo. "Once you have done this, I will then send a shadow clone to a different location above the surface. When you come up, tell me where he has gone to.
Remember to try and detect him using your chakra while underground. Become one with the Earth."
