Dr. Dre has made $175 million off of Dre Beat headphone sales alone.

The average price for noise cancelling over-ear Dre Beats is between $120-250 used and new respectively, or even $380 for the new, wireless version of beats.

Here's the crazy thing folks: The beats don't even sound that good, they just look kinda cool. But there's nothing's cool about a hole in your wallet.

And these headphones are challenged in terms of technical specs and sound by a pair of headphones nearly half the price, the Sennheiser HD280's which are at $90.

Sennheiser 280's Audio Impedence is 24 ohms higher than the beats, and the 280's have a wider frequency range + more bass than Beats by Dre. Also the noise isolation is superior on the 280's compared to the Dre Beats.

But if we go just 1 step higher than the 280's, and land on the Audio Technica ATHM50's (priced at $100 used), they blow the Beats by Dre out of the water in specs, sound quality, and noise isolation.

Type Closed-back dynamic
Frequency Response 15 - 28,000 Hz
Maximum Input Power 1,600 mW at 1 kHz
Sensitivity 99 dB
Impedance 38 ohms

The M50's have low impedence but that works in favor of the headphones design in this case. These headphones are clearly superior and yet we aren't even in the price range of Beats yet.

Basically, if you can afford Beats, you can afford to get a pair of headphones way better than than the Beats that honestly look just as good as beats.

You don't need to shell out money to the industry just to follow a fad. Be an individual. An individual with some dank sounding headphones.

It's about the look and the sound. The Sennheiser HD280 doesn't look as good. Though it is a lot cheaper... But eh, people are going to buy what they want.
I generally like to think about the sound, but I guess it's popular to think about appearances.

I just hope that someone who's about to buy headphones sees my thread and considers a different path than the beats, or at least learns something about headphone specs.

Good-looking headphones, but cheap in quality and in general overrated. But Dr. Dre got my props for making people buy such overrated crap. Even he knows the product isn't that good, yet these tools keep buying it anyway
