Same here it seem that the sharingan and rinnegan were once the same eye.

Not just that though, the sage said that the rinnegan was the result of the combination of Indra's chakra with Asura's chakra. If you think about it, you might not have even needed the sharingan to get the rinnegan.

What would have happened if Hashirama/Naruto had gotten some of Indra's chakra as opposed to the other way around? In all likelyhood, they would have gained the rinnegan without even having the sharingan.

Alot of confusion on this thread . would take to long to explain . Just look up all three dojutsu . You will see the difference between them

Yes they do. Madara used the Rinnegan to read Gai's movements. Not to mention, Sharingan evolves to Rinnegan, so Rinnegan would maintain Sharingan's base abilities.​
