It was a request by Shisui, when he handed over his eye to Itachi, to keep their clan's pride intact in the leaf village one way or another.
The other reason, was so Sasuke could keep believing in the nobility of his clan, and that it had been tainted and betrayed by it's own prodigious son, but that cat's out of the bag.
The Uchiha Clan was a clan of great pride and respect, which had been earned through many decades of bloodshed in battle, they climbed to the top of the ninja world with Madara as their leader.
Therefore, it is understandable, that they would be greatly offended by their treatment in Konoha, following the Kyuubi incident. To them it was an act of betrayal, their reputation tarnished, and tossed off to the side with limited relevance, it was the ultimate form of disrespect for such a great and noble clan, who had sided with the Senju to keep the peace.
Does that make their own, more severe act of betrayal justifiable? I think not.
Itachi took on the burden of being a traitor, mass murderer, world wide wanted criminal and killer of his own flesh and blood!
Accepting the hatred of his beloved Konohagakure and his younger brother, living a drug prolonged life for years in painful anguish and terrible disease, waiting for Sasuke, to one day end his misery.
Does he deserve that dishonour for the fake pride of a foolish clan? Does his story not deserve to be told?
