I guess I have to change my question then. Why the heck do fanboys/fangirls/fanatics throw of others fans so much. If you were true fans of the series as a whole you wouldn't let other people influence your opinions about characters. I have friends who like naruto but dis the shiz out of sasuke yes it pishes me off but I just think nothing of them (maybe illiterate mindless phucks). They can by all means dislike a character and give LEGIT reasons but none of this sasuke-be-emo-and-gay-and-selfish-and-power-hungry without backing up anything with solid facts and articulation.

Naruto has goals and ambitions. It was established that he wants to become Hokage and be acknowledged by his entire village.

For Naruto, to become Hokage means becoming strong, taking no shortcuts and saving others. Up to the Pain Arc, these were his only goals.

Now it's to save the world, end the cycle of hatred, and become Hokage.

Sasuke's words are stronger than yours.

Even Naruto understands how inconsistent and childish he is. He's willing to give up his dream just to die for Sasuke.

Mind you, this was after the Pain arc.
Naruto only decided to become hokage after he gained control over the nine tails and knew he go stronger. He also changed his mind about becoming hokage after Sasuke made his announcement. Go figure.

This was throughout the majority of Shippuden because he didn't have his "precious Sasuke" around.

EDIT: oh, and LMAO at taking no shortcuts. The dude's whole life is a shortcut.

Lol already a fight. At least you give credible evidence as to why you dislike Naruto which is not something I've noticed some anti-fans of sasuke do.

Naruto just straight up ignores Hinata but Sakura mistreated naruto only in the beginning so you are right. Great point.

I've just about always liked Naruto. He was difficult to take seriously at first, but his comic relief grew on me fast, not to mention how driven and devoted he was. I also liked how tactical he got when things became serious and I'd never see what he was planning to do coming. A great example of that was when he left a paper bomb on Gaara in their fight just before Gaara knocked him away. Hagoromo is right. He does have something about him that draws people, whether it be pity, comic relief, badassery or friendship. He matured in the second half, became less obnoxious and dimwitted and more focused, which was also a great development. His goal to become hokage to get the village that had labeled him a pariah to acknowledge him was compelling, however in the end, he showed he did not have to become hokage for that to happen. He just needed his resolve, hard work and friendship. Naruto had virtually no family or friends at first and he never once complained or caved about it. That's a strong kid. His unknown lineage and Kurama also made him mysterious.

Sasuke wasn't exactly friendly and quite arrogant at first, but I knew right when he introduced himself that something terrible had happened to him and thus became empathetic to his goal. I liked how he softened up after a while and finally befriended and acknowledged not only Naruto and Sakura but other characters as well such as Lee, Gaara, Neji, Shino, etc, not to mention putting his life on the line to save them. His teasing of Itachi made him even more interesting. I also liked that he still acknowledged Naruto in the end in their fight at the valley of death. I have to admit he ticked me off in the Sai arc with his emotionless, ruthless bigot attitude and attacking Naruto. I still can't figure out what he was trying to do. If he was really trying to kill him, possibly because he wanted to rid himself of all humane attachments or if he was just testing Naruto. Sasuke became a hard nut to crack in the second part so I'm not sure. Kishimoto stopped showing his technique development as well in this part, making him even more wonderkind. He gained back my respect however for defeating Orochimaru, refusing to kill anyone for him, releasing his prisoners and forming a new group, as it showed he still cared for people and as one panel eventually showed, his old team. Instead of anger or hate, I felt pity when he attacked Karin, Naruto, Sakura and Kakashi, as I knew he had been influenced and unhinged by Obito's revelations, his new ocular abilities and the people of Konoha mocking the Uchiha. I was glad however to see that Naruto and Itachi could still get through to him and that he finally created a goal above revenge: to save and change the world, albeit still a bit suspicious and mirroring Indra's concept of power to protect the people, rather than love.

I have always liked them equally... apart from when Sasuke decided he wanted to destroy the leaf. It was a nice move plot wise but I felt like there was no logic behind it (I know the reason was to get revenge for how they used Itachi but Itachi wanted to do it and didn't regret it).

This was throughout the majority of Shippuden because he didn't have his "precious Sasuke" around.
Naruto spent 2 years training almost immediately after VOTE because of the J-Man. He wasn't wasting time looking for Sasuke, he was training to become stronger and to beat him when they meet again. So Sasuke was incorrect about that.

Naruto already stated that he wouldn't be a good Hokage if he couldn't even save a single friend.

He also stated he would break the cycle of hatred.

He was willing to die with him order to end the curse of Hatred in Sasuke,if he attacked the hidden leaf.

Sasuke was on a war path at the time, Raiding the kage summit, attacking he jinchuriki of a village and killing a Hokage. He had the potential of turning into another Madara.

Shikamaru already stated that with the current situation during the 5 kage summit, Sasuke alone, would cause trouble between villages, creating another Shinobi world war. This is before everyone figured out Tobi was going to wage war himself.

Even tobi stated it:

Tobi made Sasuke out to be the driving force in the world's problems due to his curse. The curse Nagato mentioned. The curse Naruto said he would stop no matter what.

He even said, he would make them fight.

So that would mean, if you stopped Sasuke, you would destroy the curse. But Naruto knew he would die doing it.

So when Sasuke announced he'd become Hokage. It obviously meant he wasn't going to attack/destroy the hidden leaf village. Sasuke, by Hashirama's words and Itachi's wishes, broke his curse of hatred.

Naruto did not have to sacrifice his his dream to ensure it ended. Now that it was over he wasn't going to let Sasuke become Hokage over him .

I love Naruto, and I like Sasuke. My liking's for Naruto are greater than Sasuke, but I certainly don't hate Sasuke. Sasuke just traveled down the wrong path, for a very good reason. To him, his brother murdered his whole clan. Like, If I were Sasuke, I would be like "WTF?" and probably go down the same path. People should look at things from different perspectives. I think the show is enjoyable more for people whom like both characters, rather than hate one over the other:

If they hate Naruto: Well.. they have to see him in almost every single episode. Not to enjoyable if you hate that character.
If they hate Sasuke: Like I said above, when he's in the episodes you'll probably despise watching him. Although, if Sasuke gets the crap beat out of him, the viewer who hates Sasuke would be happy, right? Ya.
If they like both: Perfect. You love watching Naruto, and when Sasuke comes into some episodes, you'll surely get excited and happy to watch.
If they hate both: Well... you shouldn't! The series would certainly be less enjoyable. :C hehe.

Naruto is my top favorite, and I don't mind Sauske in contrast to him. I think the manga would be boring and pretty cliche (more so) if it had sauce as the main protagonist.

Besides the fan boys most people do like both characters to some degree, its just that those will no lives and or social grace seem to like to preach about their favorite in such a way as to put down others. Most people dislike this, some practically worship these kinds of people, which really gives them more than enough attention to make it seem like this is how things are everywhere.

Look hard enough (or not at all) and you see the Ultra-fan-boys (not to be confused with just a regular fan of a character). They make completely bias comments, then you will see the minnows piggybacking on their notoriety, with comments like "Soandso Just soloed this thread /thread GG" (Even tho they really said nothing but a simple dismissal or regurgitated what was already said)then proceed to lament their favorite icon in hopes they will get put on their signature. Empowered by the attention and the lackeys they continue to bash and spread unrest...

Really its an exasperating cycle... Normal, good folk don't have the time for this kind of behavior.

Yes. Even if majority of people dislike one character and like the other, they would be better off liking both characters so that receive maximum satisfaction following the series.
But I guess you can't get people to like certain characters only the author can do that especially when those two characters are polar opposites

Hinata exclaimed her love for Naruto against pain, then after that he brushed off her confession like nothing. Even sasuke said thank you when sakura confessed but knocked her out after. I think people are frustrated that hinata can't get her feelings across properly which is understandable.
