In Part 1, I actually thought Naruto was a very special and unique character. It was interesting to watch his every moment because you never knew quite what to expect. With his lonely childhood and stunted growth, his mind worked in very a surprising fashion. He was quite alienated by everything and people called him dumb and he thought himself dumb. But, he always knew how to surprise everyone because of his unconventional way of thinking and simplified outlook on the world. He doesn't know what common sense is or anything people deem normal in society.
Then, in Part 2, he grew a bit and somehow, I think Kishi got lazy with his character. He remained static and his place in the story got smaller and smaller no matter how Kishi wants him to look special. The 'Naruto has a special something that brings people together' thing was practically shoved down our throats while it was seamlessly done during the Chunnin exam arcs. His techniques were intentionally made boring so that he would always rely on his comrades and it was glaringly obvious that I started to feel sad for his fans like myself. He did the same thing every fight, his clever tricks now gone. His character designs became lazy, his outfit which used to be detailed and full of character in Part 1, became too simple.
Although I do think he is an attractive character. He is a character that people are comfortable with as a main character for a largely plot driven stories (Part 2). It is probably expected of Shonen main characters but honestly for all his shonen main character cliches, Edward Elric is a far better character. He was perfectly deep enough for a plot driven story like FMA.
I apologize for not giving more examples or much emphasis on my opinions but at the end of the day, they are just my opinions.
What do you think? Do you think Naruto is a good character?
