In Part 1, I actually thought Naruto was a very special and unique character. It was interesting to watch his every moment because you never knew quite what to expect. With his lonely childhood and stunted growth, his mind worked in very a surprising fashion. He was quite alienated by everything and people called him dumb and he thought himself dumb. But, he always knew how to surprise everyone because of his unconventional way of thinking and simplified outlook on the world. He doesn't know what common sense is or anything people deem normal in society.

Then, in Part 2, he grew a bit and somehow, I think Kishi got lazy with his character. He remained static and his place in the story got smaller and smaller no matter how Kishi wants him to look special. The 'Naruto has a special something that brings people together' thing was practically shoved down our throats while it was seamlessly done during the Chunnin exam arcs. His techniques were intentionally made boring so that he would always rely on his comrades and it was glaringly obvious that I started to feel sad for his fans like myself. He did the same thing every fight, his clever tricks now gone. His character designs became lazy, his outfit which used to be detailed and full of character in Part 1, became too simple.

Although I do think he is an attractive character. He is a character that people are comfortable with as a main character for a largely plot driven stories (Part 2). It is probably expected of Shonen main characters but honestly for all his shonen main character cliches, Edward Elric is a far better character. He was perfectly deep enough for a plot driven story like FMA.

I apologize for not giving more examples or much emphasis on my opinions but at the end of the day, they are just my opinions.

What do you think? Do you think Naruto is a good character?

Naruto changed quite a bit from Part I to Part II. So I think he was very well done there.

But during Part II, he went almost through ZERO character progression, aside power-ups.

And he definitely got quite annoying at a lot of points.

Hater or Fanboy... the fact that Naruto became a running joke, known to all the fans with that "BELIEVE IT" & "Talk no jutsu"... Happened for a reason.

Though very kind guy. Pestering or not, those people achieve what they so annoyingly desire, in irl too.

I'm quite confused here. I like the character, that's for sure.

However I understand that he's by for NOT the best written, even in this manga.

But there is a bit reason to call him good. He's teaching children who read this manga/watch anime some right things, as in not giving up, being kind, being honest, etc.

I'd put it like this: I'll definitely make my future children watch Naruto, not only because it's a very interesting story, but mainly because Naruto himself is worthy of copying some traits.

Do you think his personality is realistic enough to exist in reality?
I think such extreme lunatics do indeed exist irl, who desperately aim and bet for the "good" parts, even in the most evil people, we consider as society.

Hell... Even recently, one family who had their son shot by his intoxicated best friend, petitioned for the murder to be released, and even found a job for him. A husband and wife, forgave, and supported the murderer of their son, just because that murderer was a friend of their son. I think that is just crazy...

However, even if people like Naruto do exit irl, with such tightly and selflessly held beliefs to the core, I don't think they will be alive for very long...

There is no plot-armor in real life. Neither are the conflicts or sides, so black&white.

How the hell is being forgiving, caring, kind, and optimistic selfish? What the hell is wrong with our society?

And here is another problem with our society ladies and gentlemen...

A person doesn't know difference between "selfish" and "selfless"... And attempts to make an argument...

Don't let your kids become such idiots.

i disagree.the naruto in part 1 has undergone quick changes as the story happened close to naruto.

But in part 2, everything went haywire with akatsuki and nine tails.
The naruto character was designed not to change whatever happens.if he were to change his ninja way would fail.
if it was the detail, the mangaka wanted to simply design from start.he skipped using air brush first ,then the drawing.

i think kishi did a great job on character design.

I do like him as well, more than both the other main characters. I'm only disappointed with the lazy treatment.
