No. Death is a nice escape. Let rapists and murderers rot in jail.

Ethically and morally It doesn't feel right to determine who lives and who dies through human/judicial intervention. That said I believe that there are plenty of people who have lost their rights to be free citizens. From a business perspective it's cheaper to execute than feed/house/medically treat inmates for life. The incarceration system is complicated and broken beyond the scope of NB.

In some places, the prisons are privatized and they use the inmates as cheap labor. As slaves, basically. So, the more inmates, the more profit

To be honest, I throw morals and ethics right out the window when judging a topic like this. The room for finesse here with possibly executing an innocent person versus an actual criminal is very small and there's a thin line we walk on for it. But it's the lesser of two evils. By incarcerating them, tax money is going towards supporting them in prison. They get 3 meals a days and lead normal lives within prison for not the actual part of not being in the outside world. But even then, that doesn't justify how normal they get to live. I support the eye for an eye concept with regards to the death penalty.

Yes, I support it if it is deserved (ie: murder and any other gruesome crimes of that scale)- which in most cases... it is. People are bringing up rotting in prison, but it's not like that in all countries. A place to sleep, food, shelter, and health benefits isn't "torture". Especially when most don't feel remorse for the crime in the first place.

Also, the chance of error is small where I live (in terms of killing an innocent individual) simply because there needs to be legitimate proof and there are years between the point of the judgement and actual death (as in more than a decade). The case is reviewed even after the sentence.

Does the Bible support the death penalty?

In America prisoners used to worked off their imprisonment in chain gangs, etc. That made sense because now inmates get out of prison with all sorts of legal fees, plus felony charges that strike against their employment, and end up in a worse predictament than before they were incarcerated.

No. While I do believe that some criminals are deserving of such a punishment, it is not within our right to judge who lives and who dies. We aren't gods. In my eyes, the death penalty only serves as the emergency escape door for them. Prison is where the true judgement takes place. In a life sentence in prison, where they will not see the light of day again, they will know that they won't be leaving. They will know that what they've done has prevented them from having a comfortable life that isn't surrounded by prison bars and walls. That notion alone would be quite breaking.

Senseless killing? No. Not at all. That's a great sin.

The death penalty? Yes, in certain cases in both the Old and New testaments.

However, with this being said- the death penalty is not humans playing "god" and deciding someone else's fate. People are well-aware of what actions result in the death penalty being chosen. Laws are set for a reason. If they choose to commit disgusting acts, then it's the equivalent of committing suicide since they know the necessary repercussions will follow.

I see no issue with the death penalty in and of itself, even from a moral and ethical standpoint. Some crimes and behaviors are worthy of death; especially when a person has been proven guilty without any room for doubt. If the system in the United States worked as it is supposed to, there wouldn't be a problem; however, it is extremely difficult to weed out bias and overcome preconceived notions, and offer 100% proof that someone is guilty. So, mistakes do happen, but there tends to be ample room for appealing the sentence though in years past, this wasn't the case.

Some other realities are that it is becoming more and more difficult to A: issue a death sentence in the USA and B: actually carry it out. Most states have removed the death penalty as an option; the Supreme Court has limited the methods of execution due to cruel and unusual punishment lawsuits, and in the case of lethal injection as a method, the drugs are becoming less and less available due to the Supreme Court only permitting certain drugs for usage and the companies/countries which produce such drugs are barring their use for lethal injection.

Another thing people like to say is that it is cheaper to execute someone versus life in prison, but that simply isn't true. The drugs used are quite expensive, plus, the sentence isn't carried out immediately(usually several years into the future), and if the sentenced person uses the full appeals process, it may be a decade or two before they are actually executed. In fact, it is more costly monetary-wise to sentence someone to death in the USA than it is to sentence them to life in prison.

Am I personally for or against it? Neither. I believe each government is allowed that authority and if they choose to have it as an option, then so be it. It is not within my personal power to choose for the government what it should do, and I do not have the personal authority to sentence someone to death either. I have the right to defend myself or others, including using deadly force if necessary, in response to actions and behaviors that I have personally witnessed, as long as it is appropriate and isn't excessive. A right which I have indeed exercised. That is the limit of my personal authority, and the government has its authority.

-J

For TL;DR people: I am neither for or against it, and I have no issue with governments having/utilizing such penalties as it is within their authority to do so.

Nope, it's just the modern guillotine. It does not prevent or reduce crime, if anything it just for revenge...which justice sometimes is combined with.

Isn't any punished crime revenge for whom they wronged?

I guess it comes down to our differing opinions on the quote in my status again :p I just don't want to believe that anone can inherently be that way (though I guess people with severe mental disorders could be an exception).

Most criminals would rather choose to die than to be put in jail, so my answer is NO. I prefer that they would suffer and rot in jail than have a quick death.

It should not be.

Justice shouldn't just be I gotta get them back, they did me wrong so I need to wrong them, an eye for an eye, etc. Punishment for a crime and revenge for a crime are not really the same, although they get mixed together at times. For example: someone shoot and killed someone (for all intensive purposes they were guilty). Revenge would dictate they get killed in return. I want to say that following revenge would lead to having a more spiteful justice, instead of a fair justice.

I am Pro death penelty.

Ofcause it should be done in extreame cases (for example Brevic, the norwian mass murder who killed 77) but I truly belive that the world would be a better place if the worst of worst was simply removed from the equation, so we don't have to "waste" our limited resurces on keeping them alive, instead of using that money on preventing more people to "become rotten" what I mean by that is that the norwein goverment are paying close to 600.000 dollars every single year to keep Brevic in a maximum security prison, and it will continue to do so for the remaining of his life (which could easily last 60 more years) and I honestly can't justifie how the people of that country would have to pay for that (if he dies of old age in 60 years it would have costed them around 34 million dollars, and that is not counting any renovations they have to do to the prison or any of the current expences increasing...)

I personally see it as that goverment is pissing all over the victims families, because not only did he end 77 lives (almost all of them wore teenagers btw) not they and their fellow country men have to pay money to keep him alive, in a hign end lucacry prison (he is the only one there, he have a bedroom, living room, work out room, and a hospital/clinic room, that however is off limit for him, untill he gets sick, and when he does he have his own privat doctor and nurse monutoring him 24/7 every single day of the year, for the rest of his life.

everyone would be better of if one of the cops who arrested him had simply pulled out a gun and shot him in the head, or if they had just executed him.
