It's in the graphic novel entitled "The Search." She didn't so much as save them as she helped them out because she still needed them.

Personally, I think she has psychopathic tendencies that make her evil. Anyone remember when she tormented Zuko about their father going to kill him? That screamed psychopath. Plus she lacks empathy for others. The death of Iroh's son ring any bells? Her father didn't help things either.
