Yep. If you remember back to Itachi explaining the EMS to Sasuke, there was a demon statue in the background with four sharingans (two pairs, one over the other) and then at the top was something that looked like a rinnegan.

Of course, now it is confirmed, but back then there wasn't enough evidence to prove that is what it was pointing to.

I don't blame you. You're not as intuitive as me after all. It's blatantly obvious that the Rinnegan comes after the EMS. Blatantly obvious. Before one can get the Rinnegan he must advance to the highest stage of the Sharingan. What is the highest stage of the Sharingan? Oh yeah, EMS. Case closed. I will admit I could have made it a bit more clear but when I said "stated" but in context, I meant implied.
