Madara pretty much made it clear in his conversation with Hashirama while battling the senju tree that he had every intention on become the 10 tails jinchruki not Obito. I think that chapter was just ass pull from Kishi realizing that he did a terrible job with Madara because he really is a bad character with no interesting motives as to why he's doing what he's doing. He's also a hypocrite and a sexist he is by far the worst Uchiha with the worst Uchiha with the worst personality character development and relies on everyone's power but his own.
