he wasnt afraid of death, this guy has been so much times in near death experiences and hasnt back down, the time when he saved kakashi from solo rock, the time he let kakashi go through his chest which almost mean death for him, the stood uup to madara knowing he was a jin and he was near death, perform the rinne tensei knowing he would die, that guy is not afraid of death , he was willing to die for his ideals and that's how he died
