If we look at the first 100 chapters or so Tobi is in, his character is pretty obvious, complete goofball, meant to appear weak, pretty random with his personality. Alot of people knew there was more to Tobi, mainly from the fact he was allowed into Akatsuki and showed no power, also that he always wore a mask.

But if we look at current Tobi's motivation, WHAT POSSIBLE reason did he have to do any of that, it just seems so....weird, this guy has a serious agenda, he is going to create a complete singularity within the world in a never ending sleepful genjutsu. What part of his mind just wanted to jump around, and talk like that, saying shit like "I'm a schoolgirl in love with her senpai" to deidara.

Tobi could have monitored and worked with Akatsuki the way he did by acting 'funny' by simply using his S/T jutsu and having zetsu report to him, why did he need to go hands on, even moreso since Itachi KNEW his "real" (at the time) identity.

Do you think Kishimoto changed his intentions for Tobi as the manga progressed?

no, you saw nagato and tobi interact with eachother seriously. at the time, nagato was the head of the akatsuki, and being head of the akatsuki he was the only one who knew who tobi truly was.
he was using nagato to destroy the leaf village and start the war, knowing full well that nagato would die against naruto.

That was a looooong time after Tobi was introduced bro.

We saw Tobi right after Sasori was killed and Tobi took his ring (then dropped it and was all like OH NOES MR ZETSU). :sy:

I don't think he changed his mind about him. It is true he could have acted a bit more normal, but he wanted to hide his personality in front of Deidara, since Deidara - first of all did not like people from the Uchiha clan due to Itachi, and cause Deidara got a big mouth. If the shinobi world found out that madara was in that clan at that time, it could ruin his plans. Also he needed to capture the 3 tailed at that time, and using Deidara for that probably seemed like the best option at the time.
Although I agree his personality was a bit weird, so he probably wasn't sure whether he should be the main villain or not, but from the moment we knew nagato was trained by jiraya I am sure kishi didn't want nagato to be the main villain, so if these 2 moments occured at same time that should tell us which case it is.

tobi was just acting
We know that, the question is why bother, how can someone with so much potential power just act like that, yet be as much of a hard ass as the current Tobi is? It doesn't fit at all.

It'd be like, Itachi revealing to sasuke about their clan's death instead of:

"I had no choice...the clan died...or the village died"

he was like

"LOL I GOT REALLY DRUNK AND YOU KNOW, SHIT HAPPENS"

It doesn't fit.

Nah, I think that might have been just a cover for the other members. Had he shown his face he might have not been able to pull the Madara card later on because Kakuzu would have called him out on it.

Edit: Wait, was Kakuzu even alive at the time Tobi Joined? I can't remember shit.

Justin Law avatar! My favorite Soul Eater character. (Read the ongoing manga, if you're not already)

I think Kishi might've made some very small changes, but nothing major. I think he doesn't have a real motivation yet, but that'll be revealed soon I imagine. His rise to power was good, but after he debuted Seriousness, I felt we went to war too fast which made his motivation for so cloudy. I wanted to see more of Tobi, just a little more before he went all war mode.
