I think he activated the MS because his Sharingan has been constantly activated since he was a child. So his Sharingan has been used much more than Sasuke / Itachi who can turn theirs off. I think this is why Kakashi's MS powers are more like Madara/Tobi's.

the ms is obtained from passing through an emotional crisis.
kakashi didn't killed anyone close to him he just lost everyone who was close to him. his sensei, his team mates. and thats why he got his ms.
but theres another possibility.
since his sharingan isn't connected to his mind (hes just using it like a ninja tool) it might mean that he evolved his sharingan to ms by transforming it with his chakra or something.

I believe you gain MS from traumatic experience not by killing someone. Maybe Itachis Tsukyomi awakened it.

I still think he awakened Mangekyo Sharingan the same way Vegeta awakened his Super Saiyan abilities, he was so frustated towards Goku's power that that made him awakened it, maybe Kakashi was so frustated he lost most of the people he loved and couldn't do anything to protect them that he awakened Mankegyo Sharingan out of that frustation and that gave him an edge on how to protect his love ones more effectively, but who knows :shrug:

Story wise he says he copied it when he survived tsukyomi. And sotry wise we r lead to believe obito died right after giving kakashi the sharingan, so there's 2 way to look at this, 1:what they tell us, and 2:what ever makes you happy.

You don't need to kill your best friend, apparently witnessing and being responsible for his death, and experiencing the "guilt" or the "pain of loss" would fulfill the requirement as well
