Of course he didn't kill his best friend. From the way I've always seen it, the different levels of the Sharingan can be achieved either through pain or through a big event. An example would be Sasuke getting the MS. Kakashi worked himself emotionally until he got the MS, I assumed.

You do not gain the MS from killing or being near your best friend's death, you gain it after experiencing a tumultuous amount of emotional pain that pretty much psychologically ****s you up to the point where you awaken it, USUALLY the only thing that can cause such a pain is the death of someone very close to you, ( i.e,.. Best friend, Brother, ect,.. ) Kakashi lost all his friends early in his life after he got the Sharingan, I'm betting he just didn't realize he had unlocked it after he encountered Itachi with the MS.

The real answer is we don't exactly know. The theory is that supposedly in order to unlock the technique you must experience the death or the loss of someone close to you. We do know that Kakashi experienced the loss of someone close to him (could be Obito could be someone), we just don't know who. Did Sasuke ever kill his best friend? It was originally thought that is was unlocked by killing ones best friend but then we find out Itachi never even killed his best friend Shisui? :shrug:

Anyway the point is he acquired by the loss of someone, we just don't know who right now. at first it was thought the technique was acquired by killing ones best friend. I truly think that Kishimoto had to change this because of the obvious Naruto being Sasuke's best friend paradox. Kakashi also recognized what Itachi's Mangekyou was so he was knowldgeable about it.

You hafta loose a precious bond, and i think it might be in an objective way.

Sasuke didn't unlock the MS at the battle of the end because, despite his dickery, Naruto remained his friend.

When Itachi died, Sasuke really lost his brother.
That severed that bond in a legitimately objective way.

Kakkashi already had experienced the loss of his friends and family.
So he'd already experienced the loss of a precious bond.
