Guys I have been thinking and I have been thinking that people with depression, from the people I have met, are very intelligent people but are depressed because they cannot cope with normal society because normal society doesn't have the level of intelligence depressed people have. Could this be true? Every depressed person I have met possesses a higher intelligence than the normal person in society. Could it be their mind has progressed pass the simple thoughts of a normal person therefore it is hard for them to socialize with normal society?

As far as i know the extremely intelligent people that are depressed form a real small number of the entire depressed population...
Mostly different people have different reasons......
Though what u said does happen once in a while ........society tends to reject these people and they are not able to take it.

Yes its true.

Ive read some studies regarding this its because:
- they have better understanding on what can go wrong and worry a lot more
- they stand out and its not good to be different in any way when you are young
- they dont think of society as others do
- they simply know too much and see how corrupt our society really is

uhmm...I've met a lot of stupid people who are depressed, and smart people, and people in between, and crazy people. So really it just depends on the environment you grow up in, if you live in a house with a bunch of morons like me, then your bound to be depressed

Yeah I agree, not all depressed people are that way because they're smart, there are PLENTY of average and below average intelligence people who are depressed...

But I do agree, for smart people, seeing how the world can cause depression so I could understand why some very intelligent people are depressed. I actually know someone like that.

well Ive noticed it many times in my friends and many ppl who were attending lectures with me at the University including myself (P.S. applied phys/math & theor phys lectures)

the studies were for abnormally gifted individuals not straight A students, more like ppl with 145+ IQ (even that was a low bottom line)

I don't think so. They can, but not in most situations, in my opinion.
Anyone can get depressed. People with a lot of problems start worrying and can eventually fall into depression. AND out of millions of other reasons. In those cases it has nothing to do with intelligence. Only intelligence they could show in their state is by fighting it and getting more aware of their surroundings instead of thinking about worst possible things.

Well i kind of agree to a certain degree. Those with superior intelligence do feel depression, but there are multiple outcomes to that which are affected by your very personality and choices you make. A person with superior intelligence would only feel depression when his concepts are immature and in order to mature them he needs support from the society he lives in.
Both anger and happiness (and other emotions related to these) drives people do stuff and eventually exploit their inner potentials (with different ways and outcomes of course) and there are times when certain outcomes can't be reached by the wrong emotion. When a person feels depressed he hasn't made the decision between the two. A happy intelligent mind could make others follow him slowly and steadily proving himself correct. While a sadistic genius simply don't need others to support him on his way, he believes his concepts are corrects and proves them solely to satisfy himself that he is doing the right thing. He may offer services to the society or solely work for his profits in whichever case by fooling the very society he lives in with the help of his superior mind. However this does not mean that these are the only outcomes for geniuses, a person may encounter a mixture of such emotions following which his priorities in life would evolve and he might turn into a person extremely strict to his belief or a person that gives chance to new ideas etc. I believe the 8 psychological personality types also affect the ultimate outcomes.
Thats my opinion.
