I interpreted as so..

Nagato wanted "breaks in this world of war". He wanted moments of true peace, even if it went back to war. By having Naruto not kill him, he was able to see at least one ending to one cycle of hatred. I don't think he supported Naruto's views at all. He simply got his answer. A break in war is what Naruto posed him and putting his faith in that seemed perfect.

Kishi could have executed it better. I'll give the whole thing a read later, Trunks.

Read it all, and i agree only partially. Nagato was essentially a good person deep down, while madara was not. This was a fundamental difference. One event made nagato lose his way and turn evil, one event made madara lose his way and turn good(re founding of konoha).
Nagato knew hatred as did madara,.and he wished to find a way to eradicate it,.he followed yahikos philosophy of making people experience the same pain as a deterrent. Madara was full of hatred yet instead of rejecting it or trying to find a way to ending it he embraced it, and decided that attaining power was the only way to attain peace(the elder sons goals). Madara sought power, nagato already had it.

His ruthlessness and unstoppable power were more a result of the relatively weaker state of shinobi in his era. Had he been born in madaras time, such ruthlessness would have been impossible against the likes of hashirama and co.

So while i still agree with a lot of what was stated about nagato, i disagree that madara is a lame or useless villain in comparision. The fact that despite his strength, madara knew defeat influenced his thinking and his goals, it made him strive for the greater strength that would be needed to achieve those goals and to see them come true, a dilemna that nagato never faced.

Agreed. Nagato was the best villain - he was complex, had reasoning for his goals and his power-level [at the time at least] was beyond.
