What you label as fairness, is called 'eye for an eye'

If you punish a murderer with death, you wont bring the dead person back, you just lose another one. Is his life less worthy? Maybe. Does he deserve to die? Maybe. However it's more useful to make them work, and try to resocialize them. Of course if they are hopeless, they can just rot in prison for the rest of their lives, which is a worse punishment than a quick death.

Also death penalty is not a deterrent- despite what most people would think.

The key is proportionality.

Yes it's fair they deserve death instead of being in prison hotel feed and sleep whole day paid by peoples's money.Death to rapists and killers, death to robbers who killed, drug dealers.It's the best way to prevent and dissuades people to do it, it also prevents the return of dangerous criminals in society.Letting them free and it's jungle laws and snowball effect .

I don't know how is your prison but most of prisons have a roof,they are allowed to sleep, having a job,eat,sleep,toilet,friends and even tv in some countries and all paid by victims money include from taxes.In many countries there are beggars trying to get arrested just to go in prison for advantages.
