This is just an explanation chapter pretty much. I'll likely change the point-of-view more than once throughout this little project of mine, so that should explain a few things for youxd Enjoy
I’ll get straight to the point, as my time is severely limited. Besides, I highly doubt my identity matters quite nearly as much to you as the reasoning behind my actions. My name is Uric…Uric Bachi Atari. My first name is simple and requires no explanation, for its genericalness leaves it with none to give. The characters that form my surname can be read as "to be hit", while my middle name is written with the kanji for "punishment". Placed together, they can be translated as "to be punished" or "damned". Honestly, my mother couldn’t have given me a more ideal name, for it perfectly describes my situation…to an extent, at least. To be damned would imply that one were to go to Hell upon their demise. My soul is far too wretched to go even there. I separated myself from God forever when I was only sixteen…and I did it using an ink pen and a notebook I found lying on the ground.
I’m not immodest…and I know full well that I alone am responsible for my well-deserved fate, though, being a human being, I still hold some degree of selfishness, so I can blame at least one other person for my actions. In fact, it could only be one other person, for he is one of two…and the second is a Shinigami. This man’s identity was of no importance…to anyone other than me, because I alone will remember him as the robber who murdered my parents. He must have been rather intelligent, for he knew that my neighborhood was a much better target for burglary during the day. Everyone was at work or school during such hours and the streets were believed to be safe enough to go along without any cameras. The stupidity of the police force was ultimately my undoing, for it allowed this man to go through with his scheme without any chance of exposure.
I had been overcome with illness, though while only minor, it was enough to keep me from school. My father was far too loving for his own good, so he stayed home to watch over me with my mother, who was just as fond of her child as he was. I was prepared to walk outside and see if fresh air would do me any good, but I was hardly ten feet from the door when I heard the lock being picked from outside. My father was nearby and quickly hurried me into the nearby closet before attempting to shut it, though my hand got in the way. I was intelligent enough to know that a slightly opened door looked much less suspicious than one that was completely closed. It seemed the man’s cockiness not only provoked him to rob a home, but also do it without a mask, allowing me to see his face as he slowly walked through the now opened door. Finding the house to be inhabited was more than enough to make him panic, but my father’s sincerity to protect his loved ones would soon be his own undoing. Jumping on top of the man, he never even caught a glimpse of the knife he had pulled before it was lodged into his chest. His face being revealed and my mother in plain sight, his only objective now was to eliminate any witnesses to this crime. My mother, however, would end up giving the man a much more difficult time than my father did before she ultimately shared his fate. Not realizing that something crucial had been forced out of his pocket, he quickly ran from the scene, though he soon hurried back upon noticing its disappearance. In the time he was gone, though, I had burst from the closet, though not without placing the door back in its previous position, and scurried over to the small piece of identification now lying on my sitting room floor, doing my best not to look at the bodies of my parents. Knowing that there was a good chance of his return, I ran upstairs and waited for things to subside. I didn’t cry when the event had subsided. At that time, I still had one other person who was with me…and I tightened my grip on his pendant that laid draped around my neck as the thought crossed my mind.
I didn’t attend the funeral either. Their appearances were not excessively damaged by their wounds, so they were sure to have open caskets…and I couldn’t bear to look at them in the state they were now in. The only thing I could do to keep them in my thoughts was to take their wedding rings, which I still wear on my finger at all times. I was old enough to fend for myself, though too lazy to obtain a job, but as my father was a well-financed electrician, and my mother a successful nurse, I was left with just enough to get by with my rather limited needs and few dues left behind for me to pay. Whenever I did feel like obtaining extra income, I would use my rather exceptional intelligence to win any contests of wit I found myself eligible for, normally a tournament of chess: my favorite game. In the meantime, I was either at school or locked within my home, the door of which I had equipped with a password-encoded print scanner. I wasn’t about to let history repeat itself. I’ve always enjoyed music, artists that screamed in preference, which was odd and slightly humorous when considering my religious upbringing. I kept music on throughout my home almost constantly while I was awake, either surfing through the internet or building up on my strength and exceptional speed during my free time. Yeah, I’m somewhat of a recluse. But, no matter what activity I used to pass the time, be they limited as they were, one thing was constantly on my mind…and it should go without saying. I’d never told anyone of the face I saw or the name I read, both of which I knew by heart, the reasons for which I’ll explain later on. The man’s use of a knife left the police without a weapon to trace, while my silence and the aforementioned lack of camera surveillance or other witnesses gave them no hints to his identity. They were forced to let the case rot in a filing cabinet. It wasn’t until a month had passed that I finally found the answer to my troubles, as well as the gateway for more to come, …and it literally fell out of thin air.
My Name is Uric
