thats what i thought too, i didnt want to watch it till the end after that. not because i liked kira less than L, but because he won in such a cheap way, in a way L cant even understand nor beat.
btw.: the final end is even worse in comparision to that.

I agree with you! L should not have died. -.- i was pissed. he made like the anime. and i agree with you on why the shinigami? These are the questions that haunt me when i sleep -.-

It might have been all kinds of things, but this wasn't a "cheap" way.
It was a fest of manipulation, shows how smart he was, how he could guess his opponent's move. Bad yes, but not cheap.

And yeah, I was mad when they killed off L too and saw no point at first, but I personally think it was to add a twist to the story instead of like the good guy always wins or something.

But Mello and Near were introduced as L's successors and they were really unique characters. I personally find the way Mello died simple epic.
