DBZ was hte anime that made mainstream america aware of anime.
and? america is one country. i like how you ignore its worldwide significance.

DBZ is the classical story of good vs. evil. It doesnt call for all the details and stuff because at the end of the day evil is evil and it must be stopped.
what a terrible approach to writing. if toriyama doesnt care about depth or character then why should the audience?

With out Goku, there will be No naruto.
and that somehow means its better than naruto?

All the villains wanted to be the best and rule the universe, they are power hungry freaks just like..........TOBI, SAUSKE, MADARA. they want to control the ninja world
but madara and tobi have their reasons for it. dbz villains are evil because toriyama says they are. we are supposed to accept the "they are..just evil woooo!" excuse.

DBZ influenced Naruto, the show you are fanboying over.
jackie chan movies influenced dbz. doesnt mean they are good.

Dbz has made the greatest impact on anime IMO
no it made the greatest impact on shonen. akira made the greatest impact on anime,

But still, it's useless to insult DB series cause none of those will have be where they are today if Dragon ball was never made.
sigh..influence and popularity do not make a series good. look at 2001 a space odessy. its one big movie where nothing at all ever happens but apparently thats worth praise. ill defend the db manga and kai because things happen in those but dbz is whoring off off drawn out powerups, boring stupid fillers and terrible characters.

But GT can be considered un-canon.
so? what does canonicity have to do with quality?

You cant run if you dont learn to walk , dbz paved the way for most of these new animes
akira and saint seiya paved the way for dragonball (the manga. the anime sucks)

In fact, it got more popular when Dragon ball was released.
dragonball was extrmeely unpopular when first released. it onyl picked up when king piccolo came.

none get as defining or as memorable as Dragon Ball moments. Defining chills and craze of the Son-Father Kamehameha or Goku's first SS transformation remain immortal.
those moments sucked. firstly, gokus ssj form marked the end of dragonballs quality because after that piccolo and humans became irrelevant and it became all about just who has the bigger beam of light. and i cant feel for son/father kamehameha because the son killed the father.

It doesn't take a literary genius to figure out that DB was written with only action in mind
toriyama said he set out to make a comedy manga, not a fighting manga. fighting became the main subject later on.

Seriouly who cares about Plot when you have Two people Fighting and Ripping Planets Apart?
most people? people hate excuses for action. thats why transformers critically is a failure. its one big excuse to show cgi robots fighting. and the plot that it does have is abitrary and terrible with a million plot holes. i dunno about kids but adults like myself demand more than just explosions.

All animes
thats where you go wrong. judge by the manga, not the fillers.

Maybe so but DBZ set the stage for all these new things. Powering up, energy beams, transformations, super fast fighting.
do you think those things had only just come around? marvel and DC had been doing it for decades.

so basically your saying dbz is one of the worst animes and naruto is one of the best, but what you fail to understand is that naruto was inspired by dbz
doesnt mean its worse. dbz was inspired by jackie chan movies and ancient mythology. doesnt mean said movies are better. though they probably are. what a bullshit reasoning.

DBZ was the one that gave birth to every goddamn anime you like or know!!!!!
wrong, akira did.

DB is pure fighting manga no drama
exactly. so why would anyone like it?

It's call Dragonball z history of Bardock for freeza information. and it's call dbz history of trunks, hell there is a lot of them out there.
both are filler and onyl made for money. they dont really count in the main story. plus the history of trunks is in the manga but done differently to the anime special.

Animes i prefer in english for some reason i never like the jap voices they where horrible
what? english dub is probaly the worst dub in anime history. the jap voices are superb and done by people with many years of experience and even personally selected by toriyama.
you lose all crediblity when you say norio wakamoto is "horrible".

people who didn't like DBZ in their Childhood
Monsters, probably not even human. . . no feelings and no emotions.
wrong.

if DBZ hadnt existed Naruto would probably be crap,
way to assume crap.

every mainstream anime/manga at the present have a backbone which made them come to be what they are now... DBZ is that BACKBONE!!!!
no it isnt. akira and saint seiya probably are. and the manga of dragon ball. the anime had nearly no major influence. it was all the mangas doing.

I wouldn't consider spamming rasengan and shadow clone justu strategy
but i would call disguising myself as the opponent and as rubble to be strategy.

DBZ is the mother of anime
no it isnt. in fact its not even the mother of manga. and the manga came first.

Dragonballz is one of the best animes ever
lol watch more animes then. after completing it and finding naruto and death note, i cant stand plotless fights.

And in actual fact, there are some points in dbz that did contain background stories like when the Kai's face buu in the past.
in the most pointless depthless ways possible.

you will never change the fact that DBZ is one of the best animes in the world
only your opinion, not a fact. it isnt the best since theres no such thing. it might be your favourite but you cant tell people their opinions are wrong

in db you dont need that because its not that complicated story
yes you do need that. why should we care about goten, or cell or tenshinhan? i dont know because we barely know anythign about them.

Goku = Naruto
they are nothign alike. the only similarities id say are looks and love of food.

Vegeta = Sasuke
yes because a loud brash prideful crying emo "prince" roid raging about his rival is sooo much like the quiet brooding calm methodical versatile sasuke. in fact kishi said sasuke was created because he wanted to make a character that is NOT the typical "rival of the hero".

Master Roshi = Jiraiya
most "old masters" are white haired perverts. this isnt anything new. roshi was copied off of many characters before him.

think dbz is the best anime ever. the action, the characters and just watching it is fun and enjoyable
watch more animes. the action is boring (just people zipping around and shooting light shows), the characters are 1 dimensional and watching it feels like a chore because everything takes 20 episodes to happen.

Freiza Saga though it became less nostalgic (but still great) because Akira wanted it to end there
WRONG. he never wanted it to end there. in fact he never even intended on goku becoming a super saiyan. it was going to end much much earlier than that but akira continued cos he wanted to. nothign to do with fans or demand.

so why you saying there was not motive for the villains?
because there isnt. WHY does freeza want rule? we dont know. why does cell want destruction? cos hes programmed to. why does buu want destruction? because he isnt a person, just a magical demon with no real thinking process.

with out goku and the gang there is no one piece no naruto no yu yu hakisho no good anime/mangs
how would you know? they most certainly would still exist but witout the dbz influence in it. so thered most likely be no big explosion jutsus in naruto but thats it.

Because we loved every second of it and was probably what drew us in to anime
kids are stupid and impressionable. watch it as an adult (an adult whos never seen anime as a kid) and you would not care at all what happens to these boring characters (besides maybe gohan).

Teen Gohan turning Super Saiyan 2
generic powerup that signified the end of non saiyans being useful. epic moments are made so because of emotion and giving us a reason to care. only little kids get by on light shows and yelling.

Every (yes EVERY) successful anime after DBZ has copied it in some form or another. If you honestly believe this you're deluded........or stupid.
and dbz copied what came before it in some form or another. its as unoriignal as the other animes. toriyama never set out to create an original revolutionary manga.

All of the big ones of today like ichigo, naruto, and even luffy have borrowed goku's development in some way or another.........
goku doesnt develop. hes the same guy at the end as at the beginning. say that about naruto or ichigo.

Dragonball GT was utter shit, and is non-canon.
no it was on the same tier as z and why talk about "non canon" when this entire thread is about the dbz ANIME?

However DBZ was meant to short, sweet, and to the point.
its much longer than naruto if you consider how many chapters nothing happens when compared with the amount of content in each naruto chapter. dbzs far longer than it needs to be and feels like a chore to read/watch.

Radditz: Decent to small backstory
what? raditz has no backstory. which is terribel considering hes gokus brother.

Frieza: Lots of backstory.
all we know about his past is he has a dad and destroyed the saiyans.

Cell: He probably had the most backstory
let me summarise cells backstory: created from cells of z fighters to be ultimate fighter and kill goku. thats it. the end

Buu: Has millions of years of backstory.
really? besides being stuck in an egg the only other thing he did was fight the kais.

Vegeta: he had HUGE, I mean SO MUCH character developement.
but the problem is its reversed at the end of each arc.
saiyan saga freeza: mwahahaha imma kill you all! im ****ing ruthless!
freeza arc beginning: im somehow less ruthless and spare the kids for no real reason other than im happy i got the dragonball off of them.
freeza arc end: please kakarotto, destroy freeza to avenge my race....:(

android arc begining: despite the fact i cried in front of my rival, RAH IM BACK TO BEING A JERK. DIE GOHAN.
android arc end : oh my god gohan im sorry for getting in the way and acting like a dickweed yet again! ill never fight again!

buu arc beginning: LOL my development is reversed again! i can and do fight again, in fact im training my son to be stronger than kakarottos son. THATLL TEACH HIM FOR DYING!
buu arc middle: apparently i hate being nice even though i reversed all niceness i gained at the end of cell arc, and RAWR IMMA SELL MY SOUL FOR POWAAAA!
buu arc end: apparently im forgiven for murdering hundreds of people so now im a good guy despite living my entire life as an evil ******* who has ignored his development in the previous arc every time a new one starts! yay!

Goku: He was in three anime series from when he was 12 to like 65ish.
and didnt change at all.

Piccolo: Had a HUGE character overhaul.
piccolo: im bad!
gohan: be good!
piccolo: yeah ok.
end of development.

..Example Sakura was one of main characters what do u know about her almost nothing
kishi said shes a normal girl so theres no need for a deep elaborate backstory. but we still know she was bullied for her forehead, formed a friendship with ino, started to like sasuke long before ino did, grew out of the sasuke thing, grew to like naruto etc. thats real development. she changed and grew as a person over time.

you deserve to get beaten up. You are a silly idiotic fool/retard
what, for disliking an anime? what a sad pathetic violent child you are. get over it.

most of the other animes have copied DBZ
and dbz copied everything before it, like ancient legends and hollywood movies. notice how similar trunks arc is to terminator movies?

DBZ was one of my childhood Animes! HOW DARE YOU SAY THAT?!
so that makes it immune to criticism now?

Dude that's like saying transformers was bad
but transformers is bad. the movies. i bet the cartoon was decent.

DBZ didnt need characters with a lot of depth
all animes do. you cant get by solely on 1 dimensional relationships and things blowing up.

Frieza was born into one of the most powerful war lord families that ever lived and wanted to conquer the universe.
why?

Cell was genetically programmed to seek revenge for his master and the Red Army
but why? why is a pawn of the bad guy the main villain? why would gero make his creations stronger than him even though he made himself an android?

he was created by an evil witch that wanted to have revenge on the Gods
how do you know?

and to accomplish his goals created the most evil and diabolic war machine ever.
wrong. buus creation was an accident.

Then the chief of the Gods in an attempt to control Bubu fused himself with him making creating Fat Bubu...
no he was absorbed. and grand kaioshin didnt want to be absorbed.

And a lot of Characters evolves immensely. Take Vegeta, Bulma, C18 and Gohan for example.
vegeta and gohan maybe (despite how many times they go backwards). but 18 doesnt have development. she is just randomly krillins wife one day.

And how is there no villain history? so wait ur saying the Frieza saga had no history? the fact Frieza was the one who blew up planet vegeta and killed both vegeta AND gokus fathers isnt a story to u?
thats an event that happened in the past. but what do we actually know about the characters involved? nothing much. it works for freeza because he is just evil for the sake of it, rather than being programmed to be evil. but for backstory to work it needs to mean something. we dont feel sorry for saiyans. in fact we are basically cheering freeza on.

the fact goku avenged his entire planet wasnt a storyline to u?
its generic and that wasnt gokus goal. he wanted to avenge krillin. he didnt give a shit about his race.

doctor gero (WHO WAS THE MAIN ANTAGONIST OF THE ENTIRE DRAGON BALL SERIES)
id say freezas the main antagonist.

wanted to kill goku and created a machine to do so wasnt a storyline with a history to u?
no. wanting to kill someone isnt a good or compelling storyling.

Gohan was more powerful than Goku
no he wasnt.

Gotenks went toe to toe with Buu and could have won if not for his childlike nature.
probably not.

his animation studio made it but he didn't want to
yes he did. in fact toriyama loved gt.

just for all the GT stuff being said or mentioned or just to clarify it was not canon Akira Toriyama had nothing to do with it
wrong. toriyama checked its story, designed all the characters and planets, and approved everything they did.

DBZ birthed Naruto
drunken master birthed db.

Anime was birthed by DBZ!
no anime was birthed by this

Few complete animations made during the beginnings of Japanese animation have survived. The reasons vary, but many are of commercial nature. After the clips had their run, reels (being property of the cinemas) were sold to smaller cinemas in the country and then disassembled and sold as strips or single frames. Ōten Shimokawa was a political caricaturist and cartoonist who worked for the magazine Tokyo Puck. He was hired by Tenkatsu to do an animation for them. Due to medical reasons, he was only able to do five movies, including Imokawa Mukuzo Genkanban no Maki (1917), before he returned to his previous work as a cartoonist.

Another prominent animator in this period was Jun'ichi Kōuchi. He was a caricaturist and painter, who also had studied watercolor painting. In 1912 he also entered the cartoonist sector and was hired for an animation by Kobayashi Shokai later in 1916. He is viewed as the most technically advanced Japanese animator of the 1910s. His works include around 15 movies.

Seitaro Kitayama was an early animator who made animations on his own, not hired by larger corporations. He even founded his own animation studio, the Kitayama Eiga Seisakujo, which was later closed due to lack of commercial success. He utilized the chalkboard technique, and later paper animation, with and without pre-printed backgrounds.

The works of these two pioneers include Namakura Gatana (An Obtuse Sword, 1917) and a 1918 film Urashima Tarō which were discovered together at an antique market in 2007.[1]

Db or DBZ may not be ur fav but don't try to force ur opinion on to others.
but thats exactly what every dbz fan is doing in this thread. they claim its a "fact" that dbz is "teh bestest classic".

Like Michael influenced all modern day entertainers with his actions, DBZ influenced all modern day action anime.
lol at comparing a true legend with a ****ing cartoon. there is no comparison. jackson made good music and was recognised around the world for it. he had influence in everything including culture and art. dbz is just an anime.

It didn't need a dramatic story line. They way things were back then, if it had all the drama that the animes of today has, we wouldn't have liked it.
no because you were little kids and you were sufficiently entertained by voids of nothing for 30 minutes.

Go attack another anime from the past like Tenchi Muyo, Reboot, Sailor Moon, Gundam Wing; I don't really give a f**K, just leave DBZ alone.
what double standards you have. so suddenly dbzs immune to criticism because you like it? so you wish attacks on animes that have their own poor fans?

It's just funny to even attempt to compare a piece from the 80's that was the inspiration for so many manga/anime to a series that used it as inspiration.
i see. so drunken master shouldnt be compared with dbz because drunken master inspired it huh?

Do not compare DBZ to Justin Beiber, Rebecca Black, Jersey shore you ignorant, ignorant, ignorant child.
do not compare dbz to michael jackson, first.

Just kill yourself and save the dignity you have left.
so you threaten he commit suicide because he insulted an anime you like? telling someon to kill themselves is severe harassment and cyberbullying, you know that right?

the guy who started this thread is a total d!ck.
what, because the poor man dislikes what you like? oh yes how dare he! everyone should like all the same things! opinions arent allowed dammit!

Go and check ur brain i think it's gone DBZ is legend
and? doesnt mean its good.

Ok seriously you do realize that DBZ was the base of 90% of the Naruto fans childhood.
nostalgia is irrelevant. people need to judge objectively.

but don't come in here hating on DBZ. Just gtfo
what a bunch of hypocrites you are. posting thread after thread about how kishi messed up naruto and how sakura sucks is allowed but someone bashes dbz, and suddenly they should leave? what happened to "to each his own"?

Why you gotta be hatin on the original?! If your gonna choose a anime to hate choose bleach or rorouni kenshin or frickin prince of tennis!
and what if he likes those animes? dbz is not "the original' of anything.
look at this

shonen originated in the 1950s you blithering idiots!

And I'm sure Kishi would feel the same since he was influenced by DBZ to create Naruto.
akira admires Osamu Tezuka's Astro Boy and was impressed by Walt Disney's One Hundred and One Dalmatians, which he remembers for the great art. Jackie Chan's Drunken Master movie also influenced him greatly. doesnt mean those things are better than his manga.

naruto is the son of dbz means dbz gave birth to naruto
kishi was influenced by alot of things, namely japanese mythology. db just helped out. the manga i mean. anime had nothing to do with it.

kishi is also hardcore fan of dbz,and dbgt,
no hes a fan of toriyama. which would include dr slump and sandland.

he took too many thing for dbz and gt and he put them in naruto and shippuden like
when naruto is in sagemode the boundries of his eyes become golden and orange,in dbgt when goku and vegete became ssj 4 their eyes become black
lol everyone copies everyone. toriyama copied the story of goku off of superman and story of trunks off of terminator.

Kishi himself stated that DBZ influenced him heavily in creating Naruto and still influences
While as a child, Kishimoto enjoyed reading manga, he was inspired to write one after seeing a promotional image for the film Akira. This made him analyze the artwork of Akira's original author, Katsuhiro Otomo, as well as Akira Toriyama, another artist he admired. Realizing both had their own style regarding the designs, Kishimoto decided to draw manga while crafting his own images.[9] When Kishimoto was originally creating the Naruto series, he looked to other shōnen manga for influences while attempting to make his characters as unique as possible.[10] Kishimoto cites Akira Toriyama's Dragon Ball series as one of his influences, noting that Goku, the protagonist of Dragon Ball, was a key factor when creating Naruto Uzumaki due to his energetic and mischievous personality.[11] When redesigning three characters for the series, Kishimoto cites The Matrix, one of his favorite movies, as an inspiration for such outfits.[12] He has also cited Yoshihiro Togashi as one of his favorite manga authors,[13] while the manga Sasuke by Sanpei Shirato, a series which Kishimoto likes, inspired Kishimoto in the development of the character Sasuke Uchiha.[14]

excuse me?

Naruto is kind hearted, will do anything for a friend including die, he is comical at times, he will be the strongest character(if not already), etc(I could go on) all like Goku
actually those traits are common for any hero in any story.

why would u ever want to diss a legend
being famous doesnt mean its good.

DBZ in fact did influence Naruto among other popular animes such as Bleach
doesnt mean its the bestest anime eva.

i think DB GT was a fail. DB and DBZ were awesome but DB GT was certainly a fail.
your opinion.it was about as good as buu arc.

Imagine this Naruto Shippuden as of right now is more or less DBZ. Think about it, All DBZ was goku fights, dies, stronger bad guy comes, everyone trains, stalls, gets ass kicked, filler, filler, filler, stalls some more till goku finishes his training or gets revivied. Naruto S. is more or less the same thing.
actually thats most good vs evil stories in general. not just dbz. dbz copied the people who did it before it.

DBZ is better than naruto
half of naruto is flash backs
half of dbz is people standing around looking scared while someone else screams like they are constipated

Remember dbz is one of the reasons anime media is what it is today!
i doubt that considering shonen history began 30 years before db.

No character development? Vegeta went from being a sadistic, cold warrior to a loving warrior who would sacrifice himself for the sake of the earth and his family
it took him 300 episodes and even then all hes really learnt is that kakarot is better than him. its like no one cares hes still a jerk with blood on his hands and the sole reason buu was let out of his egg.

Piccolo went from a demon looking for revenge to a mentor and ally to gohan anf goku respectively.
in about two seconds.

Gohan went from a timid boy to a powerful warrior
thats not development. thats a change in power level.

the villains did have motive: Frieza wanted to rule the universe forever, so he wanted the dragonballs, he killed anyone in his way and when the balls turned to stone, he got furious and fought them.
thats a goal not a motive. why does freeza want control, other than "im evil wooooo"? you dont know.

Buus purpose was to bring destruction.
why?

rofl dragon ball/z was the best manga alive ! Nothing u can compare to dragon ball WTF !!!!
see more anime. dbz is very generic and slow.

you might be watching the watered down XD channel version that took out all the blood and stuff
why would that change story and character?

no developing?
we had seen son goku how he grows up from a little kid to the strongest man in universe
and hasnt changed at all as a person. hes STILL a little kid.

masashi kishimoto called akiria toryoma his sensei
and? the student surpasses the master, one of the themes of shonen.

You could ask completely random people from almost anywhere in the US without any knowledge of Anime/Manga if they know who Goku is. And you'll get the answer "From DBZ?" a whomping percentage of the time.
but that does not mean the name originated with db. in fact that names thousands of years old. ask someone who goku is in the 1970s china and they will say "you mean sun wukong?"

Dude what are you smokin man, DBZ was the mother that gave birth to popular anime in America.
who cares about america? and dbz wasnt the mother of shonen.

DBZ is the basis for Naruto man
no its one of many many influences.

However, DBZ just feels like it was being written as it was going along.
it was. toriyama said he didnt plan anything out.

Goku is NOT the only strong character, in fact he has died more than any other Z fighter
krillin says hi.

The story is also alike to Naruto in the way that Goku was trying to convince Vegeta to come to the good side and he did for a while before giving himself to the darkness in his heart(Majin Vegeta).
lol all goku was doing as egging vegeta on saying how pathetic he is for being controlled.

DBZ was EXTENDED it was never meant to go past the first season but then the fans kept asking for more
wrong. fans had absolutely no influence in its production

the creator had always wanted to finish it but to keep the fans happy he made new sagas, this might be why the plot had too many fights and pretty much straightforward...
no it was simply made up as it went along. fans didnt have anything to do wiht it continuing so long. in fact toriyama was offended when he heard people wanted to keep goku a kid and he was like "nope. ill stop writing this if he doesnt grow up".

Seriously, if it hadn't been for DBZ, America wouldn't know anything of anime
uh..
When Astro Boy showed up on US television in 1964, nothing like it had ever been seen in the US. This is only fair ... nothing like it had ever been seen in Japan, either. What Osamu Tezuka created was something unique ... and people all over the world knew it immediately.

Of course, we need to thank more than Dr. Tezuka for Astro Boy ... we need to thank an American named Fred Ladd as well. Someone who knew the US syndication market very well in the 1960's, Fred saw Tetsuwan Atomu for what it was and with a little help from NBC turned it into something huge. Before almost all current fans were born, the US was being turned upside down by this little robot boy. His computer mind was powerful and his atomic heart showed none of the horror which had been visited on Hiroshima and Nagasaki a few decades earlier. He was an unstoppable force for good, though he was sorely tested many times through his adventures.

What might also be surprising to many US fans is that even in the 1960's there was a sizable outcry over television shows that made people think and treated cartoon characters like they might be human. Vocal displeasure from some pressure groups increased slowly, and it became apparent that when the (rather dramatic) end of Astroboy appeared in Japan it would never be shown in the US. That's a story in itself though, and one that will have to wait for another time.

Gigantor, Speed, Kimba & Simba
So here we are, the mid Sixties, and we've got this Astro Boy thing. Very shortly afterward, a giant robot show called Gigantor (Tetsujin 28) shows up. Then, a robotic crimefighter called Tobor (The Eighth Man) appears. Then, a show about a boy who is as at home underwater as above (Marine Boy). We're not talking about something that showed in maybe two markets way outside the mainstream here ... we're talking nationwide syndication and people were eating it up. As we came to the end of the sixties, Speed Racer popped up, and little boys went nuts. Here's a show with fast cars and a daring driver, who happens to have a little brother and his pet monkey who frequently stows away in the trunk. While it was tamed for the US market, we've got certainly fatal car crashes and some painful looking stunts going on.

While there was a capable female in the series who isn't spending all of her time in the kitchen cooking for the boys, it didn't have all that much going for the girls. There was, however, a show that did ... it was called Kimba. No, it didn't have sailor suited highschool students battling crime or things like that. It starred a little boy lion, destined to become the leader of the jungle, his female counterpart, and a series of bizarre supporting animal characters. His distinctive black tipped ears and white coat became almost as recognizable as Astro Boy's asymmetrical head, and influenced the way that stories would be told in the future.

Why did girls like this? Simple, here was a powerful character driven storyline that sometimes went over the top but even slow episodes had enough emotional impact to affect almost anyone. For most of these girls who are women now, only isolated images of the show remain ... half forgotten fragments and scenes. The reason? The show is not available on videotape in the original form. This is due primarily to a series of legal problems both in Japan and the US. One day, we desperately hope that these will be resolved to everyone's satisfaction and the show will surface to inspire a whole new generation of people.

There is, of course, a new Jungle Emperor feature film that Tezuka Pro just finished for the Japanese market (which is rumored to tell the last part of the story ... which didn't make it into any of the previous versions), and that'll probably show people a thing or two. If you can't wait, of course, I'd say that you should track down a copy of the manga and find what what REALLY happens (it's surprising ... and perfect). Of course, one can't mention Kimba the White Lion anymore without also touching on a certain Disney film from a little while back which "officially" has no similarity to the Osamu Tezuka tale of Africa.

The similarities are striking to say the least, both on the surface and deep in the stories. The Disney lawyers have repeatedly and with emphasis stated that neither their film nor their animators were influenced by Kimba ... a position that is interesting when the Kimba series is viewed and entire scenes are present. Sure, it's possible that it's all one huge coincidence ... it's just about as likely as the Van Allen belt catching fire, buxom furry female aliens landing in Central Park (not that anyone would notice), and Jesse Helms discovering that God really DID speak through Donna Summer records played backwards all in the next five minutes. Maybe slightly less so. In case you're counting, it's 5:04:25 AM EDT.

The Star Blazing 70's
In the 1970's, another wave of anime swept through the US. While it didn't have the same sort of cultural impact that the first one did, it's far closer to most fans. It began with the (primarily East Coast) phenomena of Star Blazers (Yamato), although in some markets the influence of Battle of the Planets (Gatchaman) was even more pronounced. These two series, arriving fairly close together in the US, took two different routes in their Americanization: Star Blazers was frequently dead on accurate when it came to plotlines and dialogue.

For those of you who are wondering, the Japanese equivalent of the Earth saving "Cosmo DNA" was even MORE inane in the Japanese version so we can't blame Westchester Films for that one. There were cuts in the second episode (where the US Navy sinks the Yamato and we see its gallant crew fighting off those evil Grummans and such) and some others, but for the most part the show arrived here intact. Dialogue, of course, was altered to reflect the West's perceived backlash against the entire crew of the Yamato drinking Sake during critical events, and the entire suicide-mission aspect of the story was significantly toned down. Still, the strength of the original shines through in those first two series: they're still a treat to watch today.

Battle of the Planets
Battle of the Planets, on the other hand, was made to conform to the perceived US market much more closely with judicious editing. To be fair, the original probably wouldn't have been able to run on regular US television at the time without those cuts as the show itself is quite violent. There is a lot of punching, kicking and bleeding to death present here, so a few minutes are added to each one to offset the cuts with the addition of 7-Zark-7 (who many take as a personal insult): he's not in the original Japanese program at all! The cities are not evacuated before this-weeks-bug-monster attacks, or are those cities anywhere other than on Earth itself.

Probably the biggest change for the US conversion is the fact that the show DOES have a very definite ending ... one member of the team (who is dying anyway of an incurable illness) stops the doomsday clock seconds before the Earth would have been destroyed. The number of seconds remaining on the face of that doomsday clock is his number in the Gatchaman team. He then dies happy to have saved everything and the rest of the team comes apart. Not only that, but Berg Katse (Zoltar) meets his/her end only minutes before.

The Battle of the Planets adaptation was not as successful as it should have been (only some of that first season was adapted for the US market), and there was another attempt some time later when the show resurfaced as G-Force. While much of the violence was back in it, the dub itself was generally less satisfactory and the show again sank to be seen today on cable only. As with Star Blazers, enough of the original brilliance shows through to give the average US fan a taste of what this was like, and it influenced many people on this side of the ocean ... people who were beginning to discover that they weren't alone when they ran into each other at SF conventions. From the US fan's perspective, the biggest problem the show really had at the time was the lack of printed books covering it. Unlike Yamato, there are only a few difficult to get (even then!) works.
no mention of dbz.

Wanna know whats funny is that DBZ was the most popular anime
twilight is proof popular doesnt mean good

i dont hate naruto but its practically the same thing... Go after saskue... saskue doesnt want to turn back to the good side... go after saskue again...
well dbz is "beat the bad guy...the bad guy turned good...beat the bad guy..."

Every anime after DBz has used its formula.
and every anime before it.

No anime can express speed and power the way DBz did.
yes it can. dbz barely reaches planet busting. compare that with saint seiya and gurren lagen.

Anytime I have to compare an anime, comic book, or cartoon character in power Goku is who I use to measure it.
why on earth would you do that? gokus about mid tier power-wise. there are reality warpers, galaxy busters, mindrapers etc all stronger than goku. gokus just one of the most famous. superman is actually more measured against than him.

As for the villains never having motive frieza wanted control over the universe and immortality
why? for no reason other than "wooo im evil", freeza does everything purely for no real reason.

yea he killed random people while he waited but he's a BAD GUY and that sounds like something a bad guy would do would t you agree.
certainly not a good bad guy.

The author of Naruto got the idea from dbz
While as a child, Kishimoto enjoyed reading manga, he was inspired to write one after seeing a promotional image for the film Akira. This made him analyze the artwork of Akira's original author, Katsuhiro Otomo, as well as Akira Toriyama, another artist he admired. Realizing both had their own style regarding the designs, Kishimoto decided to draw manga while crafting his own images.[9] When Kishimoto was originally creating the Naruto series, he looked to other shōnen manga for influences while attempting to make his characters as unique as possible.[10] Kishimoto cites Akira Toriyama's Dragon Ball series as one of his influences, noting that Goku, the protagonist of Dragon Ball, was a key factor when creating Naruto Uzumaki due to his energetic and mischievous personality.[11] When redesigning three characters for the series, Kishimoto cites The Matrix, one of his favorite movies, as an inspiration for such outfits.[12] He has also cited Yoshihiro Togashi as one of his favorite manga authors,[13] while the manga Sasuke by Sanpei Shirato, a series which Kishimoto likes, inspired Kishimoto in the development of the character Sasuke Uchiha.[14]

i mean if you truly look at naruto there are similarities lik orange jumpsuit, power ups ,freindship/rivalry etc dbz made anime current in the usa i think u should have more respect for the legacy that is DBZ
all animes have similarities to each other.

the simple fact that dbz is and will always be the pinnacle of anime in the us
no its not a fact. its your opinion.

dont ever disrepect dbz!!!!
and why not? what makes it so immune to it more than other animes which are just as famous and influential?

Many people cite the DB series to be the source of all animes/mangas, today which is probably true,
it isnt. not even close. the first manga was in 1910's, and the first anime in america was in the 1960s. dragon ball was released in the late 80s.

i still see the influence of DBZ nowadays in new things coming out, and still see people making parodies of it. 20 years later. plus they redid it with DBZ Kai.
kai was needed because z's pacing and acting were absolutely awful. this sent the wrong message to kids who grew up with the wrong dialogue.

So I used to watch DBZ when I was younger and thought it was the best thing ever(who on here didnt); but looking back I realize its probably one of the worst animes ever made. Horrible story line and no character development whatsoever.

I mean practically all the main villains (frieza, buu, etc..) had no motive and just wanted to destroy the world just because. No depth to any of the characters, no backstory on the villains everything is just black and white. Either evil or good.

In naruto and other animes countless episodes are spent developing the main characters and the villains and how they became the villain. I mean all of naruto is about how Sasuke grows into a villain. DBZ is just a very simplistic anime.Only thing going to DBZ was the action. Im just saiyin (lol see wat I did there)...

***UPDATE***

Also its probably not THE worst one out there cuz there's lots of animes and probably really bad ones that no ones even see but it definitely isn't one of the good ones.

Ok stop telling me about how Kishi got inspiration for Naruto from DBZ I know this already and I knew it before I made the thread. Doesn't change these facts:

FACT: DBZ has weak plot. If a 5 year old can grasp the plot then its not a very deep and meaningful plot.
FACT: DBZ is repetitive. I can sum up every saga of DBZ in about one paragraph which i will do down below.
FACT: DBZ villains and heroes depth ( they are either good or bad) no gray areas. The only exception to this was Vegeta who started out all bad then became good
FACT: DBZ fights were drawn out and boring, just raw power VS raw power no strategies involved at all?
FACT: you DBZ fanboys are just letting nostalgia take over your emotions. Stop getting your panties in a twist

Here is every DBZ saga in a nutshell

Scene of Goku and his friends all happy and relaxed. OH NO! enter powerful alien headed to earth. TRAIN TRAIN TRAIN. finally after a month of episodes villian reaches destination. Good guys fight villian. Villain transforms into different form. Pwns heroes. Everyone lies on ground waiting for Goku to come save them. Goku arrives. Kicks ass. Villian transforms AGAIN. Kicks gokus ass. Goku turns super saiyan and kicks ass. Oh look ANOTHER F-ing transformation. Fight drags on. Both Goku and Villian pretty beat up; Goku finished day with Spirit bomb. Everyone uses dragonballs to irreverse every bad thing that happened. Then Scene of Goku and his friends all happy and relaxed. OH NO! enter powerful alien headed to earth. REPEAT
Totally agree with you. + rep

dude u probably need to start watchin dragonball, then DBZ, then GT. then see if it makes sense. when u finish watching go watch again. repeate these steps until common sense is aquired. :flaw::flaw::flaw::flaw::flaw:
The only remotely good anime you named in that was DB. Easily the best because of what happened after that DBZ wad decent not the best but GT is just a watching things blow up with no plot whatsoever.

DBZ is revolutionized Anime and Mangas!!
no it did not. only a few manga like it have been seen since and even then only abritrarily. anime and manga truly originated with akira and astroboy.

many have been influenced by it and still pay homage to DBZ??
so? far far more were influenced by astroboy and pokemon.

can you explain how DBZ is still making money, coming out with episodes, video games even new manga after the death of the creator?
it isnt. kai failed because it isnt. in japan, people are tired of it and only buy it because they think its new material like the bardock manga.

do you see this happening with Sailor Moon? any of the Gundams? Yu Yu Hakusho? Astro Boy? cmon dude go kill yoself slowing
yes i do actually. and telling peopel to kill themselves automatically invalidates your entire point. cyberbully.

you cannot say that DBZ is horrible
yes i can.

too many people already have proven that DBZ has storyline, character development, plot.
yes it has them but not much. and not in any kind of good way. most of the characters are archetypes from other works.

look at the uncanny influence DBZ has had on Naruto.
its more likely naruto was influenced by the dbz-esque works that came before it.

enrgy araus with electricity and no pupil in the eyes spikey hair rising hair
common in most anime and manga. dont act like dbz created that.

after effect images and teleporting like speed
originated with superhero comics like superman

rasenshuriken=distructo disk?
no. they work completely different and look different. one is a shuriken (ancient ninja weapon), one is a sphere of energy.

even dragon ball z characters knew how to make shadow clones
implying dbz invented cloning techniques when cloning has existed for decades before dbz did it.

people transforming into Tailed giant powerful beasts!
theyve been doing that since ancient mythology.

rasengan=spirit bomb?
they work totally different, and rasengan should be yellow, not blue since thats naruto's chakra colour.

famous energy clashes and energy beams!!!!
again did not originate with dbz.

Someone help this guy, why would u ruin such a great series
if dbz is so great, it wont be ruined.

DBZ is one of the first Mangas ever to reach the Westren World.
no astroboy was in the freaking 60s. since then were was alot of mangas coming out. dbz was pretty late to the party. read this.

DBZ never claimed to be a bleeding heart lovey dovey series like Naruto. DBZ has always been true and outright about what the series is.
actually it seems confused as to what its themes are about. naruto knows what its about (peace vs hate, revenge vs forgiveness, bonds vs control)

vegeta starts off bad. settles down and becomes good. loathes himself for becoming soft and becomes majin. but again becomes good tries to sacrifice himself by blowing up to become the hero
the problem with that is its cliche. of course he'd turn good. in fact krillin points out that every one of that group of friends initially was goku's enemy. vegeta was the last in a long line to be converted and even then its done in the worst possible way, by having him ignore and reverse development like forgetting he said hed never fight again.

piccolo was pure evil. the complete opposite of his pure good side Kami. his only goal was to kill goku and rule the world. but he has to side with goku to fight raditz. and to save the world that he wished to rule he trained his mortal enemy's son to protect it against nappa and vegeta. piccolo does the unthinkable and sacrifices himself for gohan. the once purely evil piccolo does that. and he countlessly again and again puts himself in harms way to save gohan in the future and movies. he befriends goku, admires him, is like a second father to gohan and trains both goten and trunks to fuse.
again that can be summarised by piccolo just one day deciding to be good after gohan said he should be good. its rushed, and most of what you said happened in the space of a few chapters at best.

thats only 3 of the dbz characters!
and the only ones with any kind of major development at all.

your stupid statement that there is no character development and that no plot and that characters get stronger for no reason is stupid. a 5 year old can see the development and plot.
just because development is there doesnt mean it was written well or adds alot to the story or who those characters are. once piccolo turns good, he loses all personality and role in the story. hes jsut there, and comes out occasionally to fight. but ultimately hes boring.

Don't hate on DB and DBZ because it's the best manga/anime on the planet.
thats like saying "your opinion doesnt matter. mine is always right and your not allowed to bash the things i like because i said so, dammit!"

DBZ was a great anime and manga.... alot of animes have taken alot of ideas from DBZ.
and dbz took ideas from movies and mythology. your point?

Also, has put anime on the map in america.
no it didnt. akira and astroboy did.

Try and find a great anime to watch in late 90's on TV
yu yu hakusho

Umm dude ur retarded DBZ is ****ing Legended and you should go **** yourself ******...
stop. your creating a bad image for dbz not a good one. if all its fans are agressive little idiots, then no one will watch it.

When was the last time naruto lost a fight?! Agaisnt sasuke at the valley? That was the only L he ever took ever!!
naruto lost against nagato (itachi saved him). naruto lost against madara (but he was weakened and a clone). naruto lost against pain (hinata, minato and nagato's suicide saved his life). naruto lost against itachi almost instantly. and he lost against sasuke the second time around almost instantly as well. but thats because he didnt want to use kyuubi i guess. in part 1 he lost to orochimaru, kakashi, sasuke, rock lee etc.

The fact is that yes today's players are faster/stronger/smarter, however without the NFL and the players from the earlier days there wouldn't be players of today.
retarded logic. OF COURSE there wouldnt be players today if people before hadnt set the tone. but to say those players are automatically better because of this is wrong.

Only reason that anime is popular like it is now is because of DB.
no its one of the reasons. do some research and you might realise dbz isnt actually that much of an influence as others.

Naruto / naruto shippuden is what it is today because of DB.
db is what it is because of drunken master and astroboy. your point?

one thing more dbz characters r the strongest character in anime world
no they arent. kami tenchi, gurren lagen, haruhi suzymaki, demonbane, lord of nightmares. heard of them? no because dbz fans are ignorant beyond belief.

Nostalgia? It's much more than that and what you just did is not only a complete taboo, but you just broke one of the most fundamental rules of history and as a result your entire opinion is not credible
get over yourself, he bashed a cartoon not insulted gandhi.

You say that sucks, that sucks and that sucks. If all that was so bad, how come it's one of the most important, if not the most important anime of all time?
it isnt. astroboy, akira, fist of north star, are all older and more important. dbz is critically demolished overseas in terms of the dub, and the manga is popular but by no means "important". im sure the world would get by just fine without it.

Even before Osamu Tezuka died, other powerful influences were making their marks with manga and television series. Eight Man (TOBOR, the Eighth Man), Kaitei Shonen Marin (Marine Boy), and Tetsujin 28 (Gigantor) all found their way to American TV in the 1960's and very early 1970's. Filling Tezuka's shoes was probably impossible, but the Starving Seven (an artist hothouse project started by Tezuka) were each destined to make their own way in this fledgling industry. Members of this core group are still active today, but one of the first to break out and take the world by the horns was Liegi Matsumoto. His Space Cruiser Yamato (Star Blazers) triggered the Second Wave of fandom almost by itself in the US, and many of us think that it's only a matter of time before his presence is felt again in the animation industry. "The Cockpit" (not currently available in the US) gives very interesting insight about just how cool this guy's stuff can be ... and we're all just waiting for an announcement about some of his older stuff being revived as everything old is new again.

Other Early Shows
Also a significant force in early Anime was Ippei Kurei. Many animation fans don't know that name, but almost all of the older ones (and many becoming fans right now thanks to the Cartoon Channel) would be able to finish the line "Here he comes, here comes ..." (after all, he IS a demon on wheels, and he's often flying as he guns his car around the track). There is now such an intense interest in this 1967 television show that a recent Volkswagen TV commercial features Speed (Racer, that is), Trixie and the rest of the gang along with a Golf GTI. After this success, he went on to create what Tatsunoko Studio is perhaps best known for: Science Ninja Team Gatchaman (responsible for the rest of the Second Wave fans). This property had three different television series over the years, and more recently, an OVA series (if you don't know what that is, read on) of its own.

Although it was butchered when it was adapted for the US market, enough of the original strength of this show comes through even now. Sadly, the US audiences have only seen the first series (and not very much of that ... there is a significant and protracted death as the show winds itself up) as of this writing ... but that's about to change. Word has it that the second series (the Gelsadora series) is coming this fall under the name "Eagle Rider". At any rate, most fans of Ranma 1/2 feel that Ranma is the first character to change from male to female ... forgetting that Berg Katse (Zoltar) did the same thing during the first season of Gatchaman (not mentioned in the US adaptations, but it does explain the lipstick, eh? ) ... and wasn't too happy about it either. It didn't happen with a bucket of water, but over time, and it was as inexorable as the tides. Destined to be born twins, Sosai X (the thing in the flames ... actually, the bird image is only what it wants to look like) fused them into a single being with a superhuman intelligence and a schizoid personality.
What you're doing is no different from saying that the original Star Wars utterly sucks.
to some it does. its not like its blasphemy to say otherwise. the great thing about old stuff like star wars and dbz is that it sets the stage for newer, better material. it doesnt mean that all the "original" content MUST be the best simply because its the original.

The quality is horrible, the special effects are archaic and the plot is nothing special either.
see? your doing the same thing he is doing. your judging star wars as having "sucked" but then go into a tirade of how its famous and influential because other people think its the best in history. which isnt true. people love it but hardly considered the best.

Because it's a milestone, a landmark in the history of film making. The influence it had was massive and it's exactly the same for Dragonball and DBZ.
no it isnt. dbz is a mother****ing cartoon famous in the cartoon world. but star wars is worldwide popular and influenced so many pop culture archetypes. even peopel who've never seen it will instantly recognise a reference to it. with star wars, no one had ever seen anything like it before. and it was improved upon with its sequels. people have built on db as well, but gradually its more and more forgotten. star wars is timeless. do not compare the two. star wars gets done in 3 movies a much more compelling "bad guy turns good" story than db does in dozens of volumes. try watching redlettermedia for why shoving shit on the screen for the sake of showing fights (dbz and star wars prequels) is not as good as a timeless appeal at the heart of what it means to be human, supported by groundbreaking effects (star wars). popularity is irrelevant in assessing critical quality.

You are extremely narrow minded as you completely disregarded its influence and the context in which it was created and aired on TV.
yes we should ignore its influence. because to judge a series on its own merits objectively calls for you to ignore the fact that its popular and influential.

That you don't like DBZ that's your opinion.
yes it is. so why are you telling him hes "fundamentally wrong"?

what do you mean "so"? so the show sucks. so why are you defending it like its the bible if you agree it sucks? we are judging on its actual merit, not how popular it is.

Apparently you are under the impression that that actually still matters. It does not, it's worthless, irrelevant, not needed.
oh. ok. so i can write a book thats bad, boring and about just people fighitng and i will be a millionare. because apparently story, plot and character dont matter.

There are countless of books and movies that became almost legendary, but got criticized years later because the way you look at things always changes. But that never took away their status. It doesn't matter how bad you find the plot now, it doesn't matter how repetitive you see it now as none of that changes the importance DB and DBZ had on the world of anime and manga when they were released. DBZ is a milestone
yes it does matter. he is not trying to say it has no importance. he is saying the plot sucks and the characters suck. according to you, a show can be horrible but people will just accept it because its popular and revolutionary. dbz came in when anime was already popular.

You should be ashamed as a manga reader and an anime watcher that you reduced DBZ to just criticizing its plot and characters and completely ignoring the influence it had and its value
your overestimating just how much influence it actually had, and using it as a smokescreen to shut out people criticising it fairly. we need to be able to judge somethign fairly and not get blinded by nostalgia. otherwise we are sheep going with whats the "norm".

If DBZ didn't exist, both Naruto and One Piece would have looked differently or maybe never existed in the first place.
so? dbz wouldnt exist without drunken master but by your logic that means drunken master is a masterpiece that cannot be criticised because it indirectly birthed anime.

That's what made DBZ so great
its great because people were influenced by it? uh...
so by actually criticizing DBZ like that and ignoring its status, you just invalidated your own comments as those are the result of DBZ.
no he didnt. he simply judged dbz fairly. unbiased by how popular it is.

DBZ is like a legend dude.. It made the manga world famous across the globe
no it didnt. manga existed decades before it and was popular long before dbz.

without it, today manga might not have been noticed at all...
it was already noticed.

but at the time of no light during night, electric bulb was a major leap in the life of people.....DBZ is like that....
lol comparing an invention like that to a cartoon.

YOU CANT JUST COMPARE it to NARUTO.
your entire post is about comparing the two.

Goku's color uniform <> Naruto uniform
- Supersaiyan hair <> Naruto hair
- Supersaiyan glow <> Naruto chakra mode, Kyubi mode
- Character Attributes (Brave and Jolly Goku/Naruto; Snobbish Vegeta/Sasuke etc)
- Goku SS4 colors <> Naruto Sage mode
you act as if those things originated with dbz. glowing power and brave personality are from ancient mythology, not a cartoon.

DBZ was meant to be a light-hearted storyline that was good for all ages to at least learn something about heroes. There was no intent to go in depth
no but its still poorly written and cliche.

Are you implying that the plot shouldn't be about beating the enemy?
thats ALL dbz is about. its what you call plot driven. vegeta was forced to team up with the good guys because a villain wants immortality and they must stop him. naruto is character driven. sasuke becomes evil because of circumstances regarding him and his choices. see the difference?

Fights were about raw power. Strategy was barely used because they didn't need to rely on strategy.
they do actually. if broly had a strategic mind, he would have won in his movie. and if the z fighters werent retards they could have stopped the villains before they even got a chance to power up. every character in dbz is dumb. and what does it say when someone who got brain damage as a child is the universes best fighter lol.

Don't even try to debate the depth of Naruto characters. This apparent "depth" is just a few episodes of their crybaby past that people try to wield as an argument when really it's just to flesh out characters.
not everyone has a crybaby past. many are shown so that people better understand why that character is the way they are. for example oro is as scary as he was in his introduction, but still got a backstory that kind of explained why he wants immortality so badly. db backstory was plot driven. there to explain why some villain wants to blow up the world.

u r a shi* bro,we all here r dbz fan,no one dont hates dbz,only u r the one who hates,i am saying again
no plenty of people in the thread agree with OP.

sayians race is got killed by frieza, vegeta wants to kill him,and he is got killed

same happens to sasuke his clan is also killed and he kills his bro itachii the killer
so because someone is the last of their clan/race in dbz, that means dbz was the first piece of fiction ever to do that?

it was interessting enough to get your attention and go watch it. Isnt that the deffinition of a good serie lol?
no. i watched transformers revenge of fallen and hated it. still do. just because i watched it doesnt make it attention grabbbing or good.

Well you aren't understanding the concept of dragon ball z it was made for younger viewers as were naruto is more for teenage to adults,
no they are aimed at the same audience. dbz was just marketed to american kids by the dubbing company since they severely dumbed it down

In dragon ball z you never seen someone licking blood off anothers face
yes you do. freeza once licked vegetas blood off of his face, and broly licked up his own blood.
fighters pulling each others hearts out.
well gohan imploded a cell jrs chest with one punch. does that count?

No character development? are you frigging serious go watch dragon ball( yes as in dragon ball not dbz) from the very beginning and come back and say it.
character development shouldnt be able to be summarised as
"im bad"
"be good"
"yeah ok"
but it can with db.

Stop being a f****** TROLL!!!!!!!~!!!
im not. people who tell others to kill themselves for bashing a cartoon are the true trolls.

What gives you the right to play God and "correct" everybody's opinions,
what gives anyone the right to claim that dbz being the bestest anime eva is "fact"?

Lay off, and say your opinions, but don't say everybody else's is wrong.
i didnt. its the fact that people are saying the OPs opinion is wrong because of nostalgia that pisses me off

Your icon, signature, and name are all DBZ names, and now you're trolling DBZ?
how am i trolling for admitting a series sucks? i used a name from an old forum and too lazy to change it thats all. i dont have to like whats in my avatar's from to like the avatar itself.

GT is just a watching things blow up with no plot whatsoever.
ok once again no plot =/= bad plot. gt most certainly had a point to make. such as baby wanting to avenge his race but being actually more evil than the saiyans were, and the dragonballs being overused because of human greed etc.

and? america is one country. i like how you ignore its worldwide significance.

what a terrible approach to writing. if toriyama doesnt care about depth or character then why should the audience?

and that somehow means its better than naruto?

but madara and tobi have their reasons for it. dbz villains are evil because toriyama says they are. we are supposed to accept the "they are..just evil woooo!" excuse.

jackie chan movies influenced dbz. doesnt mean they are good.

no it made the greatest impact on shonen. akira made the greatest impact on anime,

sigh..influence and popularity do not make a series good. look at 2001 a space odessy. its one big movie where nothing at all ever happens but apparently thats worth praise. ill defend the db manga and kai because things happen in those but dbz is whoring off off drawn out powerups, boring stupid fillers and terrible characters.

so? what does canonicity have to do with quality?

akira and saint seiya paved the way for dragonball (the manga. the anime sucks)

dragonball was extrmeely unpopular when first released. it onyl picked up when king piccolo came.

those moments sucked. firstly, gokus ssj form marked the end of dragonballs quality because after that piccolo and humans became irrelevant and it became all about just who has the bigger beam of light. and i cant feel for son/father kamehameha because the son killed the father.

toriyama said he set out to make a comedy manga, not a fighting manga. fighting became the main subject later on.

most people? people hate excuses for action. thats why transformers critically is a failure. its one big excuse to show cgi robots fighting. and the plot that it does have is abitrary and terrible with a million plot holes. i dunno about kids but adults like myself demand more than just explosions.

thats where you go wrong. judge by the manga, not the fillers.

do you think those things had only just come around? marvel and DC had been doing it for decades.

doesnt mean its worse. dbz was inspired by jackie chan movies and ancient mythology. doesnt mean said movies are better. though they probably are. what a bullshit reasoning.

wrong, akira did.

exactly. so why would anyone like it?

both are filler and onyl made for money. they dont really count in the main story. plus the history of trunks is in the manga but done differently to the anime special.

what? english dub is probaly the worst dub in anime history. the jap voices are superb and done by people with many years of experience and even personally selected by toriyama.
you lose all crediblity when you say norio wakamoto is "horrible".

wrong.

way to assume crap.

no it isnt. akira and saint seiya probably are. and the manga of dragon ball. the anime had nearly no major influence. it was all the mangas doing.

but i would call disguising myself as the opponent and as rubble to be strategy.

no it isnt. in fact its not even the mother of manga. and the manga came first.

lol watch more animes then. after completing it and finding naruto and death note, i cant stand plotless fights.

in the most pointless depthless ways possible.

only your opinion, not a fact. it isnt the best since theres no such thing. it might be your favourite but you cant tell people their opinions are wrong

yes you do need that. why should we care about goten, or cell or tenshinhan? i dont know because we barely know anythign about them.

they are nothign alike. the only similarities id say are looks and love of food.

yes because a loud brash prideful crying emo "prince" roid raging about his rival is sooo much like the quiet brooding calm methodical versatile sasuke. in fact kishi said sasuke was created because he wanted to make a character that is NOT the typical "rival of the hero".

most "old masters" are white haired perverts. this isnt anything new. roshi was copied off of many characters before him.

watch more animes. the action is boring (just people zipping around and shooting light shows), the characters are 1 dimensional and watching it feels like a chore because everything takes 20 episodes to happen.

WRONG. he never wanted it to end there. in fact he never even intended on goku becoming a super saiyan. it was going to end much much earlier than that but akira continued cos he wanted to. nothign to do with fans or demand.

because there isnt. WHY does freeza want rule? we dont know. why does cell want destruction? cos hes programmed to. why does buu want destruction? because he isnt a person, just a magical demon with no real thinking process.

how would you know? they most certainly would still exist but witout the dbz influence in it. so thered most likely be no big explosion jutsus in naruto but thats it.

kids are stupid and impressionable. watch it as an adult (an adult whos never seen anime as a kid) and you would not care at all what happens to these boring characters (besides maybe gohan).

generic powerup that signified the end of non saiyans being useful. epic moments are made so because of emotion and giving us a reason to care. only little kids get by on light shows and yelling.

and dbz copied what came before it in some form or another. its as unoriignal as the other animes. toriyama never set out to create an original revolutionary manga.

goku doesnt develop. hes the same guy at the end as at the beginning. say that about naruto or ichigo.

no it was on the same tier as z and why talk about "non canon" when this entire thread is about the dbz ANIME?

its much longer than naruto if you consider how many chapters nothing happens when compared with the amount of content in each naruto chapter. dbzs far longer than it needs to be and feels like a chore to read/watch.

what? raditz has no backstory. which is terribel considering hes gokus brother.

all we know about his past is he has a dad and destroyed the saiyans.

let me summarise cells backstory: created from cells of z fighters to be ultimate fighter and kill goku. thats it. the end

really? besides being stuck in an egg the only other thing he did was fight the kais.

but the problem is its reversed at the end of each arc.
saiyan saga freeza: mwahahaha imma kill you all! im ****ing ruthless!
freeza arc beginning: im somehow less ruthless and spare the kids for no real reason other than im happy i got the dragonball off of them.
freeza arc end: please kakarotto, destroy freeza to avenge my race....:(

android arc begining: despite the fact i cried in front of my rival, RAH IM BACK TO BEING A JERK. DIE GOHAN.
android arc end : oh my god gohan im sorry for getting in the way and acting like a dickweed yet again! ill never fight again!

buu arc beginning: LOL my development is reversed again! i can and do fight again, in fact im training my son to be stronger than kakarottos son. THATLL TEACH HIM FOR DYING!
buu arc middle: apparently i hate being nice even though i reversed all niceness i gained at the end of cell arc, and RAWR IMMA SELL MY SOUL FOR POWAAAA!
buu arc end: apparently im forgiven for murdering hundreds of people so now im a good guy despite living my entire life as an evil ******* who has ignored his development in the previous arc every time a new one starts! yay!

and didnt change at all.

piccolo: im bad!
gohan: be good!
piccolo: yeah ok.
end of development.

kishi said shes a normal girl so theres no need for a deep elaborate backstory. but we still know she was bullied for her forehead, formed a friendship with ino, started to like sasuke long before ino did, grew out of the sasuke thing, grew to like naruto etc. thats real development. she changed and grew as a person over time.

what, for disliking an anime? what a sad pathetic violent child you are. get over it.

and dbz copied everything before it, like ancient legends and hollywood movies. notice how similar trunks arc is to terminator movies?
so that makes it immune to criticism now?

but transformers is bad. the movies. i bet the cartoon was decent.

all animes do. you cant get by solely on 1 dimensional relationships and things blowing up.

why?

but why? why is a pawn of the bad guy the main villain? why would gero make his creations stronger than him even though he made himself an android?

how do you know?

wrong. buus creation was an accident.

no he was absorbed. and grand kaioshin didnt want to be absorbed.

vegeta and gohan maybe (despite how many times they go backwards). but 18 doesnt have development. she is just randomly krillins wife one day.

thats an event that happened in the past. but what do we actually know about the characters involved? nothing much. it works for freeza because he is just evil for the sake of it, rather than being programmed to be evil. but for backstory to work it needs to mean something. we dont feel sorry for saiyans. in fact we are basically cheering freeza on.

its generic and that wasnt gokus goal. he wanted to avenge krillin. he didnt give a shit about his race.

id say freezas the main antagonist.

no. wanting to kill someone isnt a good or compelling storyling.

no he wasnt.

probably not.

yes he did. in fact toriyama loved gt.

wrong. toriyama checked its story, designed all the characters and planets, and approved everything they did.

drunken master birthed db.

no anime was birthed by this

source: wikipedia

but thats exactly what every dbz fan is doing in this thread. they claim its a "fact" that dbz is "teh bestest classic".

lol at comparing a true legend with a ****ing cartoon. there is no comparison. jackson made good music and was recognised around the world for it. he had influence in everything including culture and art. dbz is just an anime.

no because you were little kids and you were sufficiently entertained by voids of nothing for 30 minutes.

what double standards you have. so suddenly dbzs immune to criticism because you like it? so you wish attacks on animes that have their own poor fans?

i see. so drunken master shouldnt be compared with dbz because drunken master inspired it huh?

do not compare dbz to michael jackson, first.

so you threaten he commit suicide because he insulted an anime you like? telling someon to kill themselves is severe harassment and cyberbullying, you know that right?

what, because the poor man dislikes what you like? oh yes how dare he! everyone should like all the same things! opinions arent allowed dammit!

and? doesnt mean its good.

nostalgia is irrelevant. people need to judge objectively.

what a bunch of hypocrites you are. posting thread after thread about how kishi messed up naruto and how sakura sucks is allowed but someone bashes dbz, and suddenly they should leave? what happened to "to each his own"?
and what if he likes those animes? dbz is not "the original' of anything.
look at this

shonen originated in the 1950s you blithering idiots!

akira admires Osamu Tezuka's Astro Boy and was impressed by Walt Disney's One Hundred and One Dalmatians, which he remembers for the great art. Jackie Chan's Drunken Master movie also influenced him greatly. doesnt mean those things are better than his manga.

kishi was influenced by alot of things, namely japanese mythology. db just helped out. the manga i mean. anime had nothing to do with it.

no hes a fan of toriyama. which would include dr slump and sandland.

lol everyone copies everyone. toriyama copied the story of goku off of superman and story of trunks off of terminator.

While as a child, Kishimoto enjoyed reading manga, he was inspired to write one after seeing a promotional image for the film Akira. This made him analyze the artwork of Akira's original author, Katsuhiro Otomo, as well as Akira Toriyama, another artist he admired. Realizing both had their own style regarding the designs, Kishimoto decided to draw manga while crafting his own images.[9] When Kishimoto was originally creating the Naruto series, he looked to other shōnen manga for influences while attempting to make his characters as unique as possible.[10] Kishimoto cites Akira Toriyama's Dragon Ball series as one of his influences, noting that Goku, the protagonist of Dragon Ball, was a key factor when creating Naruto Uzumaki due to his energetic and mischievous personality.[11] When redesigning three characters for the series, Kishimoto cites The Matrix, one of his favorite movies, as an inspiration for such outfits.[12] He has also cited Yoshihiro Togashi as one of his favorite manga authors,[13] while the manga Sasuke by Sanpei Shirato, a series which Kishimoto likes, inspired Kishimoto in the development of the character Sasuke Uchiha.[14]

excuse me?

actually those traits are common for any hero in any story.

being famous doesnt mean its good.

doesnt mean its the bestest anime eva.

your opinion.it was about as good as buu arc.

actually thats most good vs evil stories in general. not just dbz. dbz copied the people who did it before it.

half of dbz is people standing around looking scared while someone else screams like they are constipated

i doubt that considering shonen history began 30 years before db.

it took him 300 episodes and even then all hes really learnt is that kakarot is better than him. its like no one cares hes still a jerk with blood on his hands and the sole reason buu was let out of his egg.

in about two seconds.

thats not development. thats a change in power level.

thats a goal not a motive. why does freeza want control, other than "im evil wooooo"? you dont know.

why?

see more anime. dbz is very generic and slow.

why would that change story and character?

and hasnt changed at all as a person. hes STILL a little kid.

and? the student surpasses the master, one of the themes of shonen.

but that does not mean the name originated with db. in fact that names thousands of years old. ask someone who goku is in the 1970s china and they will say "you mean sun wukong?"

who cares about america? and dbz wasnt the mother of shonen.

no its one of many many influences.

it was. toriyama said he didnt plan anything out.

krillin says hi.

lol all goku was doing as egging vegeta on saying how pathetic he is for being controlled.

DBZ was EXTENDED it was never meant to go past the first season but then the fans kept asking for more
wrong. fans had absolutely no influence in its production

no it was simply made up as it went along. fans didnt have anything to do wiht it continuing so long. in fact toriyama was offended when he heard people wanted to keep goku a kid and he was like "nope. ill stop writing this if he doesnt grow up".

uh..
no mention of dbz.

twilight is proof popular doesnt mean good

well dbz is "beat the bad guy...the bad guy turned good...beat the bad guy..."

and every anime before it.

yes it can. dbz barely reaches planet busting. compare that with saint seiya and gurren lagen.

why on earth would you do that? gokus about mid tier power-wise. there are reality warpers, galaxy busters, mindrapers etc all stronger than goku. gokus just one of the most famous. superman is actually more measured against than him.

why? for no reason other than "wooo im evil", freeza does everything purely for no real reason.

certainly not a good bad guy.

While as a child, Kishimoto enjoyed reading manga, he was inspired to write one after seeing a promotional image for the film Akira. This made him analyze the artwork of Akira's original author, Katsuhiro Otomo, as well as Akira Toriyama, another artist he admired. Realizing both had their own style regarding the designs, Kishimoto decided to draw manga while crafting his own images.[9] When Kishimoto was originally creating the Naruto series, he looked to other shōnen manga for influences while attempting to make his characters as unique as possible.[10] Kishimoto cites Akira Toriyama's Dragon Ball series as one of his influences, noting that Goku, the protagonist of Dragon Ball, was a key factor when creating Naruto Uzumaki due to his energetic and mischievous personality.[11] When redesigning three characters for the series, Kishimoto cites The Matrix, one of his favorite movies, as an inspiration for such outfits.[12] He has also cited Yoshihiro Togashi as one of his favorite manga authors,[13] while the manga Sasuke by Sanpei Shirato, a series which Kishimoto likes, inspired Kishimoto in the development of the character Sasuke Uchiha.[14]

all animes have similarities to each other.

no its not a fact. its your opinion.

and why not? what makes it so immune to it more than other animes which are just as famous and influential?

it isnt. not even close. the first manga was in 1910's, and the first anime in america was in the 1960s. dragon ball was released in the late 80s.

kai was needed because z's pacing and acting were absolutely awful. this sent the wrong message to kids who grew up with the wrong dialogue.
no it did not. only a few manga like it have been seen since and even then only abritrarily. anime and manga truly originated with akira and astroboy.

so? far far more were influenced by astroboy and pokemon.

it isnt. kai failed because it isnt. in japan, people are tired of it and only buy it because they think its new material like the bardock manga.

yes i do actually. and telling peopel to kill themselves automatically invalidates your entire point. cyberbully.

yes i can.

yes it has them but not much. and not in any kind of good way. most of the characters are archetypes from other works.

its more likely naruto was influenced by the dbz-esque works that came before it.

common in most anime and manga. dont act like dbz created that.

originated with superhero comics like superman

no. they work completely different and look different. one is a shuriken (ancient ninja weapon), one is a sphere of energy.

implying dbz invented cloning techniques when cloning has existed for decades before dbz did it.

theyve been doing that since ancient mythology.

they work totally different, and rasengan should be yellow, not blue since thats naruto's chakra colour.

again did not originate with dbz.

if dbz is so great, it wont be ruined.

no astroboy was in the freaking 60s. since then were was alot of mangas coming out. dbz was pretty late to the party. read this.

actually it seems confused as to what its themes are about. naruto knows what its about (peace vs hate, revenge vs forgiveness, bonds vs control)

the problem with that is its cliche. of course he'd turn good. in fact krillin points out that every one of that group of friends initially was goku's enemy. vegeta was the last in a long line to be converted and even then its done in the worst possible way, by having him ignore and reverse development like forgetting he said hed never fight again.

again that can be summarised by piccolo just one day deciding to be good after gohan said he should be good. its rushed, and most of what you said happened in the space of a few chapters at best.

and the only ones with any kind of major development at all.

just because development is there doesnt mean it was written well or adds alot to the story or who those characters are. once piccolo turns good, he loses all personality and role in the story. hes jsut there, and comes out occasionally to fight. but ultimately hes boring.

thats like saying "your opinion doesnt matter. mine is always right and your not allowed to bash the things i like because i said so, dammit!"

and dbz took ideas from movies and mythology. your point?

no it didnt. akira and astroboy did.

yu yu hakusho

stop. your creating a bad image for dbz not a good one. if all its fans are agressive little idiots, then no one will watch it.

naruto lost against nagato (itachi saved him). naruto lost against madara (but he was weakened and a clone). naruto lost against pain (hinata, minato and nagato's suicide saved his life). naruto lost against itachi almost instantly. and he lost against sasuke the second time around almost instantly as well. but thats because he didnt want to use kyuubi i guess. in part 1 he lost to orochimaru, kakashi, sasuke, rock lee etc.

retarded logic. OF COURSE there wouldnt be players today if people before hadnt set the tone. but to say those players are automatically better because of this is wrong.

no its one of the reasons. do some research and you might realise dbz isnt actually that much of an influence as others.

db is what it is because of drunken master and astroboy. your point?
no they arent. kami tenchi, gurren lagen, haruhi suzymaki, demonbane, lord of nightmares. heard of them? no because dbz fans are ignorant beyond belief.

get over yourself, he bashed a cartoon not insulted gandhi.

it isnt. astroboy, akira, fist of north star, are all older and more important. dbz is critically demolished overseas in terms of the dub, and the manga is popular but by no means "important". im sure the world would get by just fine without it.

What you're doing is no different from saying that the original Star Wars utterly sucks.
to some it does. its not like its blasphemy to say otherwise. the great thing about old stuff like star wars and dbz is that it sets the stage for newer, better material. it doesnt mean that all the "original" content MUST be the best simply because its the original.

see? your doing the same thing he is doing. your judging star wars as having "sucked" but then go into a tirade of how its famous and influential because other people think its the best in history. which isnt true. people love it but hardly considered the best.

no it isnt. dbz is a mother****ing cartoon famous in the cartoon world. but star wars is worldwide popular and influenced so many pop culture archetypes. even peopel who've never seen it will instantly recognise a reference to it. with star wars, no one had ever seen anything like it before. and it was improved upon with its sequels. people have built on db as well, but gradually its more and more forgotten. star wars is timeless. do not compare the two. star wars gets done in 3 movies a much more compelling "bad guy turns good" story than db does in dozens of volumes. try watching redlettermedia for why shoving shit on the screen for the sake of showing fights (dbz and star wars prequels) is not as good as a timeless appeal at the heart of what it means to be human, supported by groundbreaking effects (star wars). popularity is irrelevant in assessing critical quality.

yes we should ignore its influence. because to judge a series on its own merits objectively calls for you to ignore the fact that its popular and influential.

yes it is. so why are you telling him hes "fundamentally wrong"?

what do you mean "so"? so the show sucks. so why are you defending it like its the bible if you agree it sucks? we are judging on its actual merit, not how popular it is.

oh. ok. so i can write a book thats bad, boring and about just people fighitng and i will be a millionare. because apparently story, plot and character dont matter.

yes it does matter. he is not trying to say it has no importance. he is saying the plot sucks and the characters suck. according to you, a show can be horrible but people will just accept it because its popular and revolutionary. dbz came in when anime was already popular.

your overestimating just how much influence it actually had, and using it as a smokescreen to shut out people criticising it fairly. we need to be able to judge somethign fairly and not get blinded by nostalgia. otherwise we are sheep going with whats the "norm".

so? dbz wouldnt exist without drunken master but by your logic that means drunken master is a masterpiece that cannot be criticised because it indirectly birthed anime.

its great because people were influenced by it? uh...
no he didnt. he simply judged dbz fairly. unbiased by how popular it is.

no it didnt. manga existed decades before it and was popular long before dbz.

it was already noticed.

lol comparing an invention like that to a cartoon.

your entire post is about comparing the two.

you act as if those things originated with dbz. glowing power and brave personality are from ancient mythology, not a cartoon.
no but its still poorly written and cliche.

thats ALL dbz is about. its what you call plot driven. vegeta was forced to team up with the good guys because a villain wants immortality and they must stop him. naruto is character driven. sasuke becomes evil because of circumstances regarding him and his choices. see the difference?

they do actually. if broly had a strategic mind, he would have won in his movie. and if the z fighters werent retards they could have stopped the villains before they even got a chance to power up. every character in dbz is dumb. and what does it say when someone who got brain damage as a child is the universes best fighter lol.

not everyone has a crybaby past. many are shown so that people better understand why that character is the way they are. for example oro is as scary as he was in his introduction, but still got a backstory that kind of explained why he wants immortality so badly. db backstory was plot driven. there to explain why some villain wants to blow up the world.

no plenty of people in the thread agree with OP.

so because someone is the last of their clan/race in dbz, that means dbz was the first piece of fiction ever to do that?

no. i watched transformers revenge of fallen and hated it. still do. just because i watched it doesnt make it attention grabbbing or good.

no they are aimed at the same audience. dbz was just marketed to american kids by the dubbing company since they severely dumbed it down

yes you do. freeza once licked vegetas blood off of his face, and broly licked up his own blood.
well gohan imploded a cell jrs chest with one punch. does that count?

character development shouldnt be able to be summarised as
"im bad"
"be good"
"yeah ok"
but it can with db.

im not. people who tell others to kill themselves for bashing a cartoon are the true trolls.

what gives anyone the right to claim that dbz being the bestest anime eva is "fact"?

i didnt. its the fact that people are saying the OPs opinion is wrong because of nostalgia that pisses me off

how am i trolling for admitting a series sucks? i used a name from an old forum and too lazy to change it thats all. i dont have to like whats in my avatar's from to like the avatar itself.

ok once again no plot =/= bad plot. gt most certainly had a point to make. such as baby wanting to avenge his race but being actually more evil than the saiyans were, and the dragonballs being overused because of human greed etc.
Incredulous.

You have to understand not everyone is an emo girl like you that needs bromance and people crying and stuff. Yes DBZ didn't go as deep as Naruto it really doesn't need too. Infact that is one of my complaints about Naruto sometimes it gets to whiny like "look at my sad backstory wah." DBZ had guys like Frieza and Cell that you didn't feel sorry for. It was a pure action and vs anime. You watched it for the fights and match ups. Whether it was 17 vs Piccolo or 18 vs Vegeta, Gohan vs Cell etc dragon ball Z always had the best fights. Naruto tried to go a similar route with Killer Bee vs Kisame but the fight didn't live up to the hype.

sure, DBZ isnt THE best anime, but neither is Naruto. It comes down to opinion. Simple story lines like DBZ attract me pretty easily if I don't feel thinking that, as stated by some of the first posters, I just take a seat, grab a snack like popcorn, and smile. But complex story lines like Naruto are pretty sweet too. The moves and animation are more versatile than DBZ. But DBZ has such vigor, excitement and just RAW FREAKING POWER that pwns. For me, it just depends on what mood i'm in. Right now... I'm bored.

REPEAT
All I really need is two words for you: **** you!
It's obvious there are a shit-ton of people that disagree with you. And like so many others have said DBZ was not written/enjoyed for it's deep plot! If you want deep plot, that's just obviously not the manga/anime for you!

If we all watched it and loved it, then it was good. Simply put. You wouldn't have watched it if it was bad. Entertainment is what's important.
