I'm taking it slower on Dawning, than I did on Dusking, in an attempt to make this story better. Comments Appreciated!
Chapter One: Dawning Day
The man rushed through the woods, as fast as he could; the only sound he heard was the panting of his own breath. He dared a look back: one of the two ANBU was still trailing him. He couldn?t guess where the other was. He was to preoccupied about getting away from this one. He heard the near-silent whoosh of a kunai, as it flew past his face; warm blood slowly oozed from his ear. ?Dang it?. he said under his breath. And then, he tripped.
He fell through the underbrush, and noticed a small cave; he ran for it. Panting, he checked his surroundings. There was no one. ?Looks like I?ve lost them?? he said to himself. ?Lost who?? he heard a male?s voice answer back. He pulled out a dagger, and made a few handsigns. ?Fire Flare!? Short balls of fire fired off the tip of the dagger, much like a Roman Candle.
A wall of water formed between the ANBU and the man, stopping all the fireballs dead. ?You know, you should be a bit more careful with those.? As he said this, Earth pillars snaked out of the ground, and wrapped around his arms and legs. ?Wha-?! What the heck?? he stuttered. ?Good job, Rena.? said the ANBU, removing his mask, as he walked over to the female ANBU, who likewise took off her mask.
?Well, now that we?ve captured the Cloud Village Deserter, we should head home.? said Keotsu, hefting the bound and gagged man over his shoulder. ?Yeah, especially since it took us two days to catch him; I haven?t had a chance to bathe!? she replied. ?Ahaha! That?s the greatness of the outdoors though!? he laughed. She punched him playfully in the shoulder. ?You could probably go a few days without showering, but the enemy would smell you a mile away.? ?Hey hey hey, that?s a low blow.? he laughed back.
They had been walking for a few hours when they had crossed paths with the man. He had gray hair, and glasses, but looked only a few years older than Keotsu. He wore a sound village headband.
Keotsu didn?t know why, but the man?s presence set him on edge, and his hand subconsciously strayed to Mikomi?s hilt. Likewise, he saw the man?s hand stray to his kunai pouch. They caught eyes, and Keotsu closed his hand around the hilt?.They walked past each other, and Keotsu loosened his grip. He heard and older man, who had been walking with a boy with eyes as red as fire, ask, just in the edge of his earshot, ?Who is it Kabuto?? ?I don?t know sir. An ANBU that?s?.? and then Keotsu couldn?t hear anymore.
Keotsu and Rena could see Konoha in the distance, stars twinkling in the background; the village slept this night. They walked towards the village gate. There was an older man, about his mid fourties, working the gate tonight. The man recognized Keotsu, not only from his unique mask, but by Mikomi. It had been come as much his calling card, as many other?s own traits.
Rena knocked on Tsunade?s door, while Keotsu undid the earth bindings, and replaced them with good old fashioned rope. A sleep Tsunade answered the door, ?You two are back all ready? Even for ANBU, that was an assignment that had an estimated nine days. Your back in six.? ?He tripped.? laughed Keotsu. ?Well, I?ll send a messenger bird to the Cloud Village, and they can come collect him.? A few other ANBU, appeared. Keotsu knew them all, sort of. Each one had an alias, but Keotsu was familiar, these four ANBU being the one?s who had captured him on his first venture into Konoha. The female ANBU was Anna, and she specialized in fire jutsu; her mask was that of an eagle. The big, burley man was simply ?Jack?, and he specialized in Earth jutsu; his mask was a Bear. The frail man was Sam, and was a wind user, but also, the team medical ninja; his mask was Koloa. The leader, and man in a mask of a wolf, was ?Toshi?. He specialized in Water jutsu, and was the one teaching water to Keotsu. Keotsu nodded to all of them, they took the man, and disappeared as quickly as they came. Tsunade dismissed Keotsu and Rena, and said she would contact them as soon as a new mission would come up.
Keotsu and Rena had been ANBU for about two months. They had passed the Jounin Exam, having taken it with Neji, they where all on the same team, they all passed. After a few high priority missions, the two where promoted to the ANBU rank.
The night was dark, the stars covered by the clouds. Keotsu stood over two graves. One was marked Micheal, it was the Guru?s. Despite normal customs Keotsu had requested that he atleast be given a burial. He didn?t know why, but he felt some kind of connection the Guru.
The other grave was marked Tetsugi; Keotsu?s father. One year ago, his father had been killed, and Keotsu, in turn, killed the Guru. Much had happened since then.
Keotsu stilled searched for Diango, never believing that he was dead. He didn?t know what he would do if he found him, or why he was looking for him, but something in his mind kept saying he needed to find him. Keotsu felt a hand on his shoulder.
He turned around, to see Rena. ?You?ve been out here for almost four hours, just staring?? she said. She knew this wasn?t new. He would often come out here and think.
He looked out at the rising sun.
The dawn of a new day. The dawn of a new chapter in his life.
