The following quote is the English translation from the anime.... which is 100% accurate.

A last word of advise from the Nidaime Hokage to Shimura Danzo, how accurate was his assessment?

Danzo had a lot of respect among his peers, mainly because he was part of the Hokage squad along with Hiruzen and his other teammates who went on to become the top advisors of Konoha.
Riding this wave and his best friends generosity, Danzo went on to form his own organisation within the Leaf, a covert operative unit known as Root.
What did he accomplish with this, did he do anything progressive.....or did he just end up causing more death and suffering due to his own agendas, just as Tobirama predicted?
Lets evaluate from the beginning....
The Uchiha massacre: There were several ways this could have been avoided, to name a few, Shisuis proposal to end the coup with his KA on the Uchiha leader would have shown flawless results. Instead Shisui's eye was snatched out the moment there was a possibility of peace..... with the excuse being that Danzo had trust issues with the man who was supplying him information on his own family?! >_>
Hiruzen was not done negotiating with the Uchiha, for all we know he might have dissolved the situation by meeting the Uchihas wishes, or possibly naming Itachi as the Hokage, he was a ninja who loved Konoha, and well beyond capable regarding his skill level.
But instead Danzo pushed Itachi in the dead of night and forced him to murder his brethren. Taking advantage of Itachi's loyalty to Konoha and his love for peace, while bargaining the life of his younger brother as just another push tactic.....all the while hiding his true agenda of amassing Sharingan from their corpses.
The Akatsuki incident.......
Interfering with Amegakure's alliance with the newly formed and progressing organisation Akatsuki, just as a way to get help in becoming Hokage by providing assistance to Hanzo in killing Yahiko and his friends, he pretty much collaborated, in creating PAIN, which ultimately led to the downfall and deaths of various villages and ninja.
Orochimaru's invasion......
A former member of Root, who gave Danzo his own personal Hashirama shoulder and his stolen 10 Sharingan for his imperfect 10 shot Izanagi......invaded the leaf village long after defecting and tried to destroy his former village and kill Hiruzen. It backfired on Orochimaru, because Hiruzen was highly underestimated, even against 2 former Hokage and an old student, even at the age of 70. But surprisingly Root was absent in this entire invasion. Hmmm....I wonder why...
Pains invasion......
This one needs no explanation, Danzo refused to help as Konoha citizens were dying. His battle strategy being......"Let them die....their deaths will be a necessary sacrifice. I will become Hokage in the aftermath."
Conclusion: Danzo epitomised self sacrifice, and yet he sacrificed everyone around him, his underlings, his best friend, entire clans........ unknown children, who were trying to end their own strife and trying to bring peace in their war ravaged land.
All for what?
"Hiruzen, no matter how hard I tried, I could not catch up to you, in the end......I could not become Hokage."
"What was I to you.....Hiruzen?"
He failed to utilise his ill earned powers. As a preacher of self sacrifice, took a hostage in the end..... and died an unavoidable death, self righteously labelling it a "sacrifice".
