Danzo wanted full credit. He wanted to demonstrate that he was capable of making hard decisions when the 3rd couldn't and even in order to this HE alone had to e responsible for the outcome.

Now, this may have been an attempt to gain prestige, but I think that's about it.

Danzo is the only shinobi I wouldn't want to run into, he wont only threaten you but everyone you might consider loving. (did this to Itachi and Kabuto)

Well even MS Sasuke was very strong and Danzo was a very old man. About Danzo stealing those sharingan for izanagi well this could apply to anyone including Naruto, Sasuke, Kabuto and Madara. No need to blame only Danzo for taking other people's powers and claiming it as his own.

And for this he is now my new favorite character lol
