Chapter 5
Old Friends
Three hours into the flight, the sun starts to set and Tarlee had gone up to the top deck to get a better view, she stands and watches as the red sun slowly creeps behind the mountains, her eyes aglow as she stares off into the sky alight with orange, pink, purple and a slight tinge of blue.
A tear rolls down her cheek as she closes her eyes and clutches at her mother’s necklace around her neck, breathing in deeply the early evening air she then breaths out a low sad sigh, a voice from behind her breaks the silence.
Thorn: I wondered where you had run off too
Tarlee: I am sorry I should have told you but I just needed a moment and the sunset is just so beautiful, I rarely get to see them in visor so many tall buildings.
Thorn walks up alongside Tarlee and puts his hand on her shoulder.
Thorn: Do not worry about it I understand too much happening at once needed some space, I mean any normal person would have lost it by now I guess.
Tarlee: What do you mean any normal person? Are you calling me abnormal?
Thorn: Well I err what I meant to say is...
Tarlee starts to laugh
Tarlee: I was just kidding I know what you meant and thank you.
Thorn just smiles and motions his head towards the stairs
Thorn: You should head back down soon it is going to get very cold out here.
Tarlee: I will in a few more minutes.
Thorn walks down the stairs to the middle decks leaving Tarlee to stare at the night sky and the stars Tarlee breaths in a deep breath then turns towards the stairs.
Tarlee: Hey Thorn wait up.
Five and a half hours pass and the transport glides over sector 15, it comes to a stop in the landing area in Okatang City.
Tarlee had been watching out a window as the transport glided over Okatang
She goes over to where Thorn was sleeping and starts to shake him
Tarlee: Come on Thorn wake up we just landed in Okatang
Thorn opens his eyes and stands up out of his seat.
Thorn: Okatang already the pilot must have had this thing on full throttle, all right; I have to get the cycle from the lower decks wait at the checkpoint for me you can easily get lost in this city.
Tarlee just nods and heads for the exit and joins the back of the cue for the checkpoint to get into Okatang, 15 minutes later Tarlee is at the front of the cue and a Guard in a dark purple and blue uniform waves her towards the counter.
Guard: Identification and licence for those weapons please
Tarlee gets out her ID card and bounty hunters licence and inserts them into the card scanner a screen brings up her information.
Guard: Ok miss Blake everything is in order here please head to the right to be scanned for Omega Gene and enjoy your stay in Okatang.
Tarlee is hesitant as she heads for the other guard to be scanned knowing what happened when Thorn tried to scan her, before she could do anything about it the guard came up to her scanner in hand.
Guard: There is no need to be worried miss it does not hurt.
The guard lifts the scanner up and begins to scan her. Tarlee looks down at the ground waiting for the scanner to say the same thing Thorns did when she notices her necklace is glowing, the scanner beeps at the guard and says “ Omega Gene detected normal mutation status level 4”
Guard: you are all clear miss welcome to Okatang city.
Tarlee looks up at the guard with a somewhat puzzled expression but walks through the checkpoint into Okatang city and waits for thorn to come.
Thorn comes through the vehicle checkpoint and goes over to Tarlee who is standing on the sidewalk with a puzzled look on her face still.
Thorn: Is something wrong Tarlee?
Tarlee: No not really, I was just scanned by the guard but this time no errors or anything.
Thorn: Well that is a relief just proves mine must be broken, what level did the scanner say?
Tarlee: Level 4
Thorn: Well that is all right then but we will still get you scanned properly though just to be on the safe side.
Tarlee gets on the back of the cycle and puts her weapons in the side holders Thorn revs the cycle and they glide off around the streets of Okatang. Tarlee thought Visor was big but it did not even compare to the size of Okatang, they go through a district that is a small city on its own, the streets glowing with signs from businesses and restaurants. They come to a stop at a bridge and Tarlee looks over Thorns shoulder at a massive lake in the middle of the city.
Tarlee: It is so beautiful
Thorn: The only city in all the sectors with a lake and a port on each side of it, takes an hour to reach the other side.
The traffic starts to move Tarlee just stares over the edge watching the lights and the twin moons dance on the surface of the giant lake. They finally reach the other side after what seems like an all too short of an hour for Tarlee.
Tarlee: So where are we going to now and do we get to go across the bridge again.
Thorn: well for starters we are going to stop in and see an old friend of mine he owns a store here he buys and sells just about anything, his wife is a good cook to so we can get some good food. He is the one who has that medical scanner as well and after that I have no idea we will see what happens.
They glide through more city streets and stop in front of a large building with a sign in bright orange, which reads smithy’s all in one store.
Thorn walks over to the door and presses a button on the holo-com unit.
A man’s face appears on the holo-com
Man: We are closed please come back in the morning our opening hours are....
The man is cut off by Thorn.
Thorn: Hey smithy surely you can make an exception for an old friend
Smithy: Thorn well I never it has been a while you know you’re always welcome here come around back you should know that by now.
The holo-com turns off and Thorn looks at Tarlee and smiles
Thorn: Are you coming?
Thorn pushes the cycle down the side alley Tarlee just shrugs her shoulders and follows Thorn down the alley.
