Chapter 4
Agent of the Collector
Thorn and Tarlee exit the settlement. Thorn walks to rear of his hover cycle and opens the metal case on the back; Tarlee is lost in thought and staring at the sky when a white copter with a red letter C on it flies overhead and lands in the settlement.
Thorn: ok the scanner is setup Tarlee. Tarlee!
Tarlee: hmm what?
Thorn: I said the scanner is setup.
Tarlee: oh sorry.
Tarlee walks over to were Thorn had setup the scanner, Thorn starts pressing some buttons as two arms extend from the scanner, they join to form a ring around Tarlee.
Tarlee: this isn’t going hurt is it?
Thorn: no but you need to stand very still
The ring emits a blue light and starts to move up and down, the screen flashes and the arms retract back into the scanner
“Error gene mutation not recognised Omega level not identified.”
Thorn: hunk of junk what do you mean error
Tarlee: is something wrong?
Thorn: must be broken never seen an error message before
Tarlee: what do we do now?
Thorn: well we are not far from an old friend of mine, he happens to have a proper medical scanner much better than this mobile unit, Just don’t ask him how he got it.
Thorn packs the scanner back into the metal case on the cycle and gets on; Tarlee slowly makes her way over to the cycle and climbs on behind Thorn.
Thorn: are you alright?
Tarlee smiles at Thorn and nods her head once
Tarlee: I’m fine
Thorn: ok had to ask I’m not much of a talker but I can listen, so if you need to just talk away.
Tarlee: thank you. So where are we going anyway?
Thorn: to the end of the quarantine zone sector 15 about one days ride with a stop in sector 16. Or we could take the transport from the hub in the mountains we will be there in half the time.
Tarlee: Might be better to take the transport at least we can relax.
Thorn just smiles and nods in agreement he revs the cycle and they glide off towards the mountains, as they leave sector 18 the white copter takes off and flies in the opposite direction.
A view screen in the back of the copter beeps the unknown figure leans forward and presses a button, an almost black picture appears on the view screen he can only just make out a desk and the back of a chair.
A voice speaks to him from the view screen.
Voice: so which one did you manage to acquirer?
Unknown figure: I got the brother, the sister managed to best him.
Voice: at least you got one of them, what condition is he in?
Unknown figure: she killed him but the device you gave me worked better than expected
Voice: good now just don’t screw it up make sure you get him back here
Agent: as your top agent have I ever disappointed you collector. Oh we may have one problem Mr Jordan is travelling with the sister.
Collector: he is your problem just deal with him if he gets in your way
The screen goes blank as communication is cut
Agent: he is your problem just deal with him (he says with a mocking tone of voice) one of these days it will be him that I “Deal” with.
The Agents ranting is cut short as Jacob starts to stir
Jacob blinks his eyes, shakes his head and tries to get up but the restraints will not budge. Jacob puts all his strength into trying to break the restraints but he cannot.
Agent: I would not even bother trying those restraints are strong enough to hold at least three of you.
Jacob: what the hell how am I here? I was dead. What did you do to me, and who the hell are you?
Agent: how rude of me.
The agent stands up and removes his top hat and bows towards Jacob
Agent: allow me to introduce myself, I am Known by many names but you may call me The Agent, I can acquirer anything or anyone.
The agent stands up straight again puts his top hat back on then sits down.
Agent: as for your other questions, you are here because my employer needed you, as for what I did that should be obvious even to you since you are no longer dead.
Jacob looks at the agent and he smiles a sly grin
Jacob: well it was nice of you to revive me wasn’t planning on dying today, now you have two choices release me now and let me go I promise I won’t kill you, or wait till we get to where we are headed and I will kill you and your employer
Agent: I am sorry Jacob but it is quite impossible for me to release you so you might as well enjoy the ride.
Jacob gets enraged his eyes glow blue and he starts to thrash about trying to break the restraints but they still do not budge.
The pilot’s voice comes over the speaker
Pilot: we are about 15 minutes away from the estate sir.
Agent: very good pilot inform you know who we will need additional help the package is being very uncooperative
Pilot: understood sir.
Meanwhile in the mountain ranges Thorn and Tarlee had just past through a small check point and where waiting for the large transport to take them to sector 15. Tarlee was watching the kids running around and listening to their mother yell at them to stay where she can see them. Thorn is searching around the brown backpacks for something he pulls out a canteen and two long silver packages.
Thorn: hungry all I have are these food bars from the ration packs they give you at the bounty office.
Tarlee takes one of the food bars tears it open and begins to eat it.
A loud hum comes from above as the transport comes in for landing.
Guard: please step back and wait for the loading ramps to fully extend before you get on the transport, all vehicles to the lower deck and are to be secured and enjoy you flight.
The transport came to a stop and the large loading ramps extend everyone rushes to get on Tarlee is about to go up the ramp when Thorn stops her.
Thorn: I have to go and secure the cycle I will meet you just near the elevators to the lower decks.
Tarlee just nods and rushes up the ramp and disappears inside the transport
Thorn just sighs and shakes his head as he pushes the cycle down the loading ramp to the lower decks.
A few minutes later Thorn had finished securing the cycle and went up to the top decks. As he exits the elevator he notices Tarlee is not waiting for him, he starts to look around and notices a commotion at the back of the transport, two guards had pulled Tarlee aside and where talking to her Thorn heads towards them.
Thorn: is there a problem here
Guard: she does not have clearance to have weapons on board
Thorn: she should have how about you speak to the guard at the check point; we showed him our bounty hunters licences he gave us clearance.
The guard presses a button on his comms unit and starts talking to the check point, a few seconds later he nods at the other guard and looks back at Thorn
Guard: sorry there was a mix up you both have clearance enjoy your flight to sector 15.
The two guards walk off towards the front of the transport and Thorn and Tarlee turn to look out the windows as the transport begins to fly out of the mountain ranges.
