The technique certainly is powerful. But it works in a similar fashion to amaterasu and kamui. Madara has to focus chakra in his eye. And hashirama being a sensor should be able to sense the chakra build up and form some defence before it hits. This is ofcourse if hashirama has knowledge of the jutsu. If he doesn't then he is going to loose.

The technique spans from Rinnegan, so I doubt Hashirama has any knowledge on it.

The thing about gravity is that it can bypass solid objects. No defense can block it.
