[Discussion] Criticized for being Yourself?

I don't usually make threads like this, but this has been annoying me for quite a long time now.
Anyway here it goes.

I go to School. My interests are Anime/Manga, gaming and collecting things.
I like doing exercise and drinking and eating my favorite foods etc.
I dress the way I like. I listen to songs I have recently started getting into, Celldweller, Blue Stahli and so on.

Anyway, enough of that, my point is, why do people ( At my Age ) or any age for that matter, criticize people on being themselves and liking a certain taste of music. Or they are put down my others because they game on a certain machine?
Like for example. If a bunch of Xbox/Ps3 Fanboys asked me what I played. And I said just say, on PC. They all give you that look like you're some kind of alien. Or because you do something different than other people. People sit there and criticize you and mock you for being different. Now, this has actually barely happened to me. But when it did, it sparked this idea of ''Why?''. So because I'm not interested in whatever your interested in, you feel the need to criticize me?

I don't know if its Teenagers in general. But nobody is themselves, most follow some trends, listen to all the same music, eat the same foods, dress the same. Now, I know the term ''People can have similar tastes to each other''. But it gets out of control when they feel when other people aren't like them. They feel the need to come into my or someone's business and annoy them about it. What I'm trying to say is.

Why are people criticized for doing something they enjoy?

People would be wise to love the similarities, and learn from the differences between one and another. Sadly, not everyone shares this vision.

It's not just teenagers. I've seen a 60 year old woman critisizing someone else at a restaurant for wearing a skirt she didn't deem "fashionable." Some people just don't accept others, and I agree it's just mean.

I think you can only be criticized if "Being yourself" means acting like a troll. Other than that I don't see why you have to be criticized.

I think its just cause you're in high school probably. Once u graduate and get older the whole cool thing doesnt really matter anymore

Easy one.

Everyone has a difference of opinion. If the things you like seem 'out of the ordinary' to the majority, you will be criticized. Think nothing of it, When you meet the few people who share similar ideas you'll feel joy in expressing your feelings. The best counter to that is Don't let the pressure get to you and become someone your not. But this in and of it self, is usually hard for the average person to do.

Everyone says "Ignore stigma" but it requires a lot of sacrifice, and adaptation to frequent harassment (verbally, non-verbally, directly or indirectly) :|

Exactly. It would be weird if some guy was reading a manga in a restaurant wouldn't it? Well I don't think it would be. Hes just doing something he enjoys and isn't harming anybody. Yet he gets criticizedfor it.

Wait, did you actually see someone get criticized for that? -_- It's just like someone bringing a laptop to Starbucks, or a kid taking a coloring book everywhere. I see nothing wrong with it either. :shrug:

I've actually seen some guy get criticized in subway for having a laptop. 3-4 girls I heard in the background called him a nerd. Its pathetic :|

But seriously, as long as people are different in any way shape or form, judgmental people will exist.

Isn't it obvious? In a society like ours, no one is allowed to be different. Differentiating yourself only serves to make you a social outcast, and once you're an outcast there is no hope of ever being accepted. I personally don't live in an area where someone is not allowed to be themself by their peers. People for the most part dress how they want, eat what they want, act how they want, and speak how they want without too much fear of being judged or ostracized for it.
That being said, it isn't all rainbows in my area. There are, and always will be those guys that can't stand to see someone live outside of conformity. The funny thing about those guys is that they think they are different. They think they are something special, and others want to be like them because of these special qualities they possess; but these qualities are just things they have seen on television and try so hard to imitate.
I don't know man, it's hard to say why teenagers do the things they do.. maybe there are too many negative influences in their lives that cause them to be spiteful of others, or maybe said teenagers are just inherently unkind and intolerant. Whatever the reason is, this problem is like racism or some other kind of social taboo. It will always exist; whether we try to ignore it or not. There will always be people who refuse to accept you for you, and these people will always try to make you conform. The only thing you can do is flip them off and keep doing you.

Thats brilliant. Thats exactly the answer I was looking for. I'd rather be a 'Social Outcast with no friends then hang around with abunch of people who all copy each other to fit into society.

That's a great question, as a person that used to be the type you are explaining... I'd say it's because at one point or another I was super self conscious of everything about me both physically and mentally...

I used to think I was "cool" because i made fun of people behind there backs...

I am now always disgusted and embarrassed at the way I used to act towards others and try to make up for it

In the end just be yourself, do what you like and don't care about what people say.

That's a great question, as a person that used to be the type you are explaining... I'd say it's because at one point or another I was super self conscious of everything about me both physically and mentally...

Haha great. I also was like that. I tried fitting in and it felt so bad and uncomfortable. Felt like you were forcing yourself to do stuff you litterly didn't want to do. Lucky I'm out of it now. Doing stuff I enjoy is much more enjoyable.

Very much true. Actually I think being yourself makes them feel worse. Thats one of the reasons they put you down in the first place. U_U
