There's no way to counter it,if you're caught you get fcked up.You just have to avoid looking at the eyes before the genjutsu happens.

Um if Itachi doesn't make things super weird then not many people would be able to tell that they were in a genjutsu.

Deidara couldn't, Sasuke for the most part couldn't (he broke Tsukuyomi but Itachi made no effort to hide that it was a genjutsu), and most impressively Oro did not know he was in a genjutsu until Itachi's eyes showed up against the sky.

Well Gai faced Itachi alone and I remember him saying that he looked at Itachi's feet thoroughly the time they were fighting.

Its not possible to avoid looking at those two.

I understand Killer bee (perfect jinchurikki and all) but why Might Guy and Kurenai?

Itachi used genjutsu: mirror demonic illusion or something like that to reverse the genjutsu. So kurenai was trapped in a genjutsu but she just released her own genjutsu before Itachi could kill her.

Gai "Thought" he had it in the bag when he was about to fight Itachi.. He thought his little "Look at Itachi's feet" method was flawless lol. But little did he know, all Itachi had to do was point a finger.....

Luckily they didn't fight, or that would've been a epic fail for Gai lmao.

Well seemingly Kurenai has shown a genjutsu feat and how to break a genjutsu.Didn't you find it weird that she got 5 in genjutsu,despite only one genjutsu feat?The rest of her partial points indicate on her capability to break regular genjutsu. (And she also seems to likely able to detect genjutsu's occurrence.)
