In all fairness Itachi seems to be the most gifted ninja overall. We all know his feats, his intelligence, his abilities. He was and still remains to be ahead of his time.
From what we seen however, Gai himself had never ever lost a fight except against the 2nd most powerful character in the entire verse.
Kisame, also known as a tailless beast, and a man who has survived against the Hachibis Jin and the Raikage, has confronted Gai on 3 occasions and lost everytime. One of the most powerful ninjutsu users lost to a man who uses nunchucks.
As powerful as Itachi is, I'm beginning to think that Gai is probably the most powerful ninja in Naruto up until RM Sasuke/Naruto surpassing even Hashirama.
When Gai arrived on that river that morning and raised his palm against Itachi (let's say kisame would've been busy with Kurenai and asuma for arguments sake) do you think itachi wouldve been killed?
