Typically, Jiraya projects an easy-going demeanor. Although, when in the presence of a female, he switches to his perverted mode. When he has time to waste or just because, He spies on women, typically when they're in hot springs or some source of water. As he does, he writes in a notebook claiming it is research for his Icha Icha Paradise books which are very popular among perverted men. The main readers as shown in the manga and anime is Hatake Kakashi who does nothing to hide his perverted nature.
Jiraya is also the sensei of Naruto and was the sensei of the Yondaime, Minato Namikaze, and Konan, Yahiko, and Nagato. One of his nicknames, "Pervy Sage" was given by Naruto after he found out how perverted his new sensei was. Instead of a normal Konoha headband, he wears a headband that has two horns and the kanji for oil. He wears kabuki sandals and costume unlike normal shinobi. When first introduced, Jiraya was perverted all the time and only serious when forced too and if there weren't too many females around. He is a compulsive drinker even though he isn't as bad as Tsunade.

Jiraya was one of the Sandaime's students along with Tsunade Senju and Orochimaru. During the Second Great Ninja War, he and his former teamates fought Hanzō, who gave them the title of Konoha's "Three Legendary Sannin" as a reward for surviving the strife of their battle. On their way back to Konoha, they encountered the Ame Orphans, who Jiraiya chose to train. These three would later be creator of Akatsuki and Nagato would go on to kill Hanzō and later Jiraya. Naruto meets Jiraya when he is being trained by another person for the Chunin Exams. When his teachers gets knocked out, he forces and kinda seduces Jiraya into training him. Eventually Jiraya and Naruto leave for a three year training trip after bringing back Tsunade and the defection of Sasuke.
