Idk how the hole was created, but it is definitely not small. Just look at the middle panel of this page:

You can clearly see the hole is large enough to contain everyone (including the Bijuus). It looks small when you compare its size to the Shinju's root but we have to remember not to underestimate the size of the Shinju, which is much larger than the barrier [

What do you mean they are pretty big when compared to the root? From that first panel, I can see the root is a least twice the size of the Bijuu in terms of height alone. I might be exaggerating but it's definitely higher, at the very least.

I mean they are pretty big and too big to be in the hole that is super small compared to a root.
