What's exactly the difference between 'I love you' and 'I'm in love with you'? The differences people have highlighted doesn't make any sense to me at all, given the word involved.

It's not contextual.

I love you is essentially saying you really like the person and they've become part of your life. Hell, sometimes saying that is saying it to a friend and not a statement of romantic intent. Whereas when you're in love with someone, you're emotionally drawn to them and it always signifies romance.

Saying I'm in love with you is deeper than I love you, I love you is usually an off the cuff remark that doesn't mean much, Im in love you means, I'm serious, I want us to be serious, it was better that she said Im in love with you than I love you

To be honest you should be one of the more experienced ones, so we might seem like a bunch of 5 year olds , when it comes to relationships etc.

Yesterday I was having lunch with my girlfriend, girlfriend as a friend and before I knew it she gave me 4 different kinds of smile in one smile. A smile of joy, a smile of happiness, a smile full of warmth and a smile full of blushing. Out of the blue she said and I quote, " I'm in-love with you. " I was shell shocked. I mean, I was happy but sad at the same time. Happy because she said she's in-love with me. Sad because I didn't hear the magical three words which is/are "I love you". That made me think for a little. does being in-love with someone and loving someone the same thing or ? What do you think guys. I mean I do love her but after hearing that she's in-love with me I've been avoiding her. Today I had about 50 missed calls from her. I didn't tell her how I feel about her. Should I ask her if she loves me or does being in-love with me enough ? Help me out.

I believe we are all curious about how the lunch meeting went, so don't leave us hanging.

Okay, I see the point. Though, syntactically, it makes zero sense. Heck, love itself is an abstraction and the pinnacle of emotion. You cannot even use the term 'love' for mere likeness.
