Comparing the 3 Absolute Defenses

This is an analysis of the 3 absolute defenses in Naruto, meaning that they protect the user from all sides. (note the susanoo in this thread is the non-EMS complete version)

Gaaras defense is a continuous/offensive wall defense. Although Gaara's defense has several weaknesses, it also has great offensive power since he can manipulate the sand to attack as well.


Gaaras Sand (auto-defense)
Pros:
Offensive capabilities
Always active
Protects from all sides

Cons:
Can be bypassed by very fast shinobi
Enough force in any area can break it
Can be broken by penetrating jutsus
Can be broken by a massive scale attack

The sand armor, while part of his defense, isn't as strong as the auto-defense, consumes a heavy amount of chakra, and slows him down considerably, making it a last resort if his auto-defense is ever broken or bypassed. It may help to reduce some of the damage for a short time, but in the long run it would hinder him more than help him.


Neji's is a continuous stationary rotating defense. It may be stationary, but since is a rotating defense, it can take much more damage than a wall type jutsu since the combination of ejecting and rotating chakra from the centrifugal forces reduces the impact and deflects the blows that are given.

size and power of dome can be adjusted by the user at will

Cons:
requires user to spin to be effective
can be broken by drilling type jutsus
can be broken by a massive scale attack
takes a significant amount of chakra to use


Now the susanoo is the stationary/offensive wall defense. Its a bit like gaaras sand though with some of its weaknesses and those of the rotation

Susanoo(Sasuke/Itachi)
Pros:
protects the user from almost all sides
has offensive capabilities
size and power can be adjusted by the user at will

Cons:
user is susceptable to attacks from below
uses large amounts of chakra
enough force in any area can break it
can be broken by a massive scale attack
increases blindness in a non-EMS user


Susanoo is very powerful since it has offensive capabilities, protects the user from all sides and becomes more powerful with each added layer.

On the down side, it takes a heavy amount of chakra to use and can cause permanent blindness if used too much. It can also be broken with significant force and the user can be attacked from below or pulled out of the susanoo itself.

So its stationary, uses large amounts of chakra, and the power can be controlled like rotation, but has offensive capabilities and can be broken like the sand defense.

Now if we were to compare the most powerful versions of each defense strictly in terms of defensive capability, if would go like this:

1)Rotation
2)Susanoo(Itachi/Sasuke)
3)Gaaras Sand

Rotation overall is simply more powerful in many aspects than both the susanoo and the sand due to the type of defense it is and since has fewer weaknesses to break it.

If we were to compare them in terms of offensive capability it would go like this:
1)Gaaras Sand
2)Susanoo(Itachi/Sasuke)
3)Rotation

Gaaras sand can be used freely since this type of defense is automatic and is not restricted to being stationary like the other two.

Susanoo would be the in-between with both great offensive and defensive capabilties. It also has takes the greatest toll on the user since it not only drains their chakra, but can cause permanent blindness if overused.

Neji's rotation is the best defence while active yes but the rotation can not last for a long time and can not be started the exact same second it stops. So even though it is the best defence doesn't it's time limit make it less effective?

You should also add to Gaaras sand cons is that any water or oil user can render his sand useless. Susanoos stamina chakra drain obviously depends on the user...Also you should add to pros Susanoo the user is able to use their own jutsus while susanoo.

Neji's rotation is the best defence while active yes but the rotation can not last for a long time and can not be started the exact same second it stops. So even though it is the best defence doesn't it's time limit make it less effective?

In actuality there really isnt much of a time limits since it can be used for as long as ther chakra allows it, but it using it for as long as the attack lasts makes it more chakra efficient becasue it is mostly a defensive jutsu with little offensive capabilities.

You should also add to Gaaras sand cons is that any water or oil user can render his sand useless. Susanoos stamina chakra drain obviously depends on the user...Also you should add to pros Susanoo the user is able to use their own jutsus while susanoo.

I can add that to his weaknesses. The Susanoo chakra drain depends on the level that it used. The lower the level, the less chakra draining it is, though not by too much. I didnt put the last part in because I am simply comparing the offensive properties of the jutsu themselves.


Thank you everyone for your insightful comments. Of course its still your guys opinion as to which one you think would be the greatest out of the three. I just made the thread to compare ther strengths and weaknesses. In my opinion, there is no one that is greater than the other and are equal in their own ways since there are some aspects they are better in.

I think Third Raikage's armor is worth mentioning, it was called the strongest shield after all. Otherwise, great thread. Other defenses though not called absolute (IMO there are no truly absolute defenses as all defenses in Naruto have been penetrated at some point) Kmimaro's bone which can protect his internal organs, Bijuu V1 and V2 cloaks, Suigetsu's ability to turn to water, Tobi's intangibility, Izanagi, and so on.

I'd say gaara's sand is the best,it has gotten very fast,and i am pretty sure noone in part 2 was able to outrun it and hit gaara,it has blocked instant explosions as well,his sand protected him from 5 complete susanoos when he wasnt looking,it protected him from 2 meteors which destroyed madara's own susanoo as well,c3 couldnt breach it,it can block light attacks,it takes no chakra unless he adds his own,people should stop mentioning how many times it has been broken,susanoo has been broken far more times in the few months of naruto time it has showed,gaara has had his defence(sand armour sand shield) broken by sasuke,deidara and madara (lee broke sand shield in part 1 but not sand armour,kimi didnt break sand armour as well,deidara snuck his bombs in gaara's sand,his sand armour was still intact,but he was then knocked out after he moved the sand so deidara counts,mizukage's oil did sand shield but not sand armour,5 susanoos didnt break his defence,meter didnt as well,joki's explosion as well didnt,madara is in because of flower world,as gaara flew over it bit still got knocked down as he was carrying other kages),so that's 2 people,that broke gaara's defence in the 16yrs of his lifexd.

Susanoo has been broken by sasuke,raikage,mei,danzo,tsunade,madara(he destroyed his own susanooxd) ,gaara and onoki,so that's 8 ppl that broke susanoo in the few months in naruto it has been shown. Susanoo also takes the person's lifeforce as well as drains chakra steadily while in use,dosent protect the under,cant be used for longetc. However, it's abilities usually make up for it's problems,as it is very powerful and versatile in battle. Although once inside a final form,firing jutsus from inside is impossible as the warrior completely surrounds the user,unless the user does a jutsus that dosent require the user from firing it from his body.

Neji's haiten protects him well,but it dosent really match up to the above two.

His skin was considered the strongest shield since his body was so durable. The lightning shroud was mostly supplementary in order to increase his speed give him resistancee to lighnting based techniques.

An absolute defense defends the user from all sides simultaneously; it doesn't mean that it cant be broken. There are other defenses that are probably much stronger than these three but only defend in certain aread like yata mirror and rashomon.

The other jutsus that you have mentioned are not included because they are mainly supplementary type jutsus that have been used defensively and are not actual deensive jutsu themselves.

Even though I like all three susanoo users better than Gaara, I'd say Gaara's defence is probably the best since he can improve it and it doesn't take much chakra either. Neji's rotation is pretty good although it doesn't have many tanking feats. Although I agree that the spinning force allows it to become a lot stronger by deflecting an impact in a circular motion. But Neji would eventually get all dizzy by spinning around doing rotation all dayxd.

Susanoo is probably the most powerful although it burns up the most amount of chakra. The reason why I say it is the most powerful is because it has protected its user from all sorts of attacks and the weapons on the susanoo makes it an ethereal warrior that fights for you. Gaara's sand is very versatile though since while Gaara is being protected, he can go on an offensive. He also retains mobility which is a huge plus. Also bare in mind his is the most natural defence compared to the two others.
