This is an analysis of the 3 absolute defenses in Naruto, meaning that they protect the user from all sides. (note the susanoo in this thread is the non-EMS complete version)

Gaaras defense is a continuous/offensive wall defense. Although Gaara's defense has several weaknesses, it also has great offensive power since he can manipulate the sand to attack as well.

Gaaras Sand (auto-defense)
Pros:
Offensive capabilities
Always active
Protects from all sides

Cons:
Can be bypassed by very fast shinobi
Enough force in any area can break it
Can be broken by penetrating jutsus
Can be broken by a massive scale attack

The sand armor, while part of his defense, isn't as strong as the auto-defense, consumes a heavy amount of chakra, and slows him down considerably, making it a last resort if his auto-defense is ever broken or bypassed. It may help to reduce some of the damage for a short time, but in the long run it would hinder him more than help him.

Neji's is a continuous stationary rotating defense. It may be stationary, but since is a rotating defense, it can take much more damage than a wall type jutsu since the combination of ejecting and rotating chakra from the centrifugal forces reduces the impact and deflects the blows that are given.

Rotation
Pros:
Protects user from all sides
size and power of dome can be adjusted by the user at will
continuously reflects attacks

Cons:
requires user to spin to be effective
can be broken by drilling type jutsus
can be broken by a massive scale attack
takes a significant amount of chakra to use

Now the susanoo is the stationary/offensive wall defense. Its a bit like gaaras sand though with some of its weaknesses and those of the rotation

Susanoo(Sasuke/Itachi)
Pros:
protects the user from almost all sides
has offensive capabilities
size and power can be adjusted by the user at will

Cons:
user is susceptable to attacks from below
uses large amounts of chakra
enough force in any area can break it
can be broken by a massive scale attack
increases blindness in a non-EMS user

Susanoo is very powerful since it has offensive capabilities, protects the user from all sides and becomes more powerful with each added layer.

On the down side, it takes a heavy amount of chakra to use and can cause permanent blindness if used too much. It can also be broken with significant force and the user can be attacked from below or pulled out of the susanoo itself.

So its stationary, uses large amounts of chakra, and the power can be controlled like rotation, but has offensive capabilities and can be broken like the sand defense.

Now if we were to compare the most powerful versions of each defense strictly in terms of defensive capability, if would go like this:

1)Rotation
2)Susanoo(Itachi/Sasuke)
3)Gaaras Sand

Rotation overall is simply more powerful in many aspects than both the susanoo and the sand due to the type of defense it is and since has fewer weaknesses to break it.

If we were to compare them in terms of offensive capability it would go like this:
1)Gaaras Sand
2)Susanoo(Itachi/Sasuke)
3)Rotation

Gaaras sand can be used freely since this type of defense is automatic and is not restricted to being stationary like the other two.

Susanoo would be the in-between with both great offensive and defensive capabilties. It also has takes the greatest toll on the user since it not only drains their chakra, but can cause permanent blindness if overused.

I think overall garra's sand has this
1. It can be used for offense
2. As seen in part one it can also be a shell for his body.
susanoo is second imo
It. Also can be offensive just like the sand.

How about A's lightning armor? How about Shino's bug defense?

They don't count because they aren't really defensive type jutsus. These are the three that have been mentioned to be the absolute defenses of the NV.

Tobitos intangibility also doesn't count even though it is used defensively simply because it is a supplemantary jutsu used mainly to transport objects to another dimension.

Now, these are the type of threads that I like. +rep
OT: I'm going to have to disagree with you about Gaara's sand being broken by a massive attack. Gaara blocked Deidara's gigantic C3 and slowed Madara's meteors down a bit.
About the penetration. That depends on how thick and dense Gaara's sand wall is. One more thing, Susano'o does not give all-around coverage unless it has legs like Madara's. Besides those things, you're right.

For the sand, Im talking about the auto-defense mechanism which doesnt include any external sand. If you look in my post, you could see I put in () auto-defens

The auto defense can be penetrated. The one he used to defend against Kimmimaro isnt an absolute defense since it only protected from one direction and cant be used in this comparison because of it.

I also mentioned that susanoo has weaknesses beneath in the cons section.

Well, you owned me. Sorry, I must've accidentally skipped those parts. Since I was wrong, that makes everything you've said 100% right. I would +rep you, but I already did.xd

Its mostly a supplementary jutsu used to increase the raikages speed and reflexes. It only gave him resistance to lightning-based jutsus like when it stopped chidori from severly injuring him.

Well, people tend to overlook underrated jutsu like rotation simply because of all of the OP jutsus we have seen nowadays. If peoepl sat down and compared them, then they would see that its much more powerful than most make it out to be.

oh. i thought it was an armor because 3rd raikage was shown to use it to make his skin harder than steel

I would say gaara sand, because ever since he learned of his mother love for him, his auto defense has become more powerful.

The 3rd raikages body was already tougher than steel. The armor was just used to increase his speed like his son.

I would say gaara sand, because ever since he learned of his mother love for him, his auto defense has become more powerful.

Gaaras auto defense in this comparison doesn't use any external sand since we all know that he can consiously add more sand to reinforce it and make it stronger. That would be classified as part of his offensive abilities.

Neji doesnt have to spin to stop attacks. He spins to deflect the atk, but he can make chakra protect him from any part of his body. And can omit a Chakra feild to help him alter certain attacks aswell.

I would say Gaara, you also forget about the constant sand armor that protects gaara.

I understand, but the rotation is what makes the defense absolute since ejecting the chakra wouldn't be enough to stop some attacks.

I will put in anyway since it is part of the sand defense.

No thrid raikage ? Anyways, i think Gaara still has the best one. Sasanoo and the sand both have offense/defense but sand takes less strain and chakra.
