So I watched the anime and then I learned that in the manga there are no knightmares! Since it is such a big difference, should I read the manga as well and if so which side story covers the second season?

Thanks in advance :)

So wait, the anime then was based on what if not on its manga counterpart?
The anime is an original project by Sunrise anime studio written by Ichirō Ōkouchi, In 2006, Okouchi collaborated with director Goro Taniguchi for composing the story and script of the Sunrise original production, Code Geass - Lelouch of the Rebellion,

there's a lot of anime like that you know.

The manga has several spin offs, but the best of them is CODE GEASS: SHIKKOKU NO RENYA MANGA. It takes place in an alternate reality.

It has a different MC, CC is still in it, but a guy named Dash who looks and acts exactly like lelouch and plays the anti hero. The manga is pretty good
