Clarify What really happend to Vergil?

Okay so i read the devil may cry comic book today it seemed as though Vergil ( Nelo Angelo) joined Mundus of his own free will, because Mundus called Nelo Angelo , Vergil, and Nelo Angelo said " Dont call me by that name, i am Nelo Angelo now" but on the Devil may cry page it said that he was actually killed and manipulated by Mundus. Anyone help??
