Chuunin exam: Gaara vs Neji

These two along with Sasuke were supposed to be the favorites in the chuunin exams and they kept giving each other dirty looks during the entire tournament. What would have happened if they face each other?

Location: Final Exam arena
Intel: the amount they had against each other from watching the preliminaries.
Intent to kill
Restrictions: Gaara can't go into full shukaku mode.

Neji would lose pretty badly. He was fast back then, but not fast enough to get past his defense. He would be avoiding his attacks the entire time and using rotation/one body blow whenever he gets caught by the sand.

He would beat the crap out of anyone else though besides Lee.

I don't know about that. It wasn't on Lee or Sasuke's level, but Neji's taijutsu was the next best after them. He easily handled Naruto's tajuu kage bunshin with just tai. All he needs to do is get close enough and then he can do the 64 palms. 64 palm speed should be able to get a few hits in every now and then past Gaara's absolute defense.

Gaara should ultimately win if he decides to go inside the sand ball since I don't think gentle fist can go through that. Some explosive kunais might help though.

He's got great taijutsu, though the 64 palms is very unlikely to land anything since Gaara could simply create a wall of sand to stop his attacks.

If he went inside the ball, Neji could use his byakugan and find a weak point in the sand and attack with gentle fist strikes to weaken it, though it would take a little while and Gaara could attack from inside the ball as well using the third eye to watch Neji.

The sand armor would crumble under gentle fist since it is maintained by chakra, which gentle fist destroys. If Gaara didn't have his auto sand defense, then Neji would win with high difficulty since Gaara would still maintain his sand control.

- If Neji keeps using Eight Trigrams Palm Rotation to keep Garra's sand off of him then he'll be out of chakra fast
- Neji isnt as fast as Lee or Sasuke so he cant attack fast enough to avoid the sand's involuntary defense
- If Neji did land a hit on Garra his sand armor would protect him like Kidomaru's did in the early parts of their fight

This pretty much explains it. Though if he did bypass the sand defense, the gentle fist would story the armor because it is maintained by chakra.

Neji's base speed is not as fast as Lee/Sasuke, but when he is doing 64 strikes his attacks are just as fast if not faster aren't they? Look at fastrthnwind's sig.

Lol, never thought I would being going against Neji. Anyways, Neji's hands might be incredibly fast and could overwhelm anybody else in taijutsu, but Gaara could simply put up a wall and get some distance between them, nullifying Neji's taijutsu.

If his foot speed was as fast as his hand speed, then he would give lee a good run for his money

Neji also has great reaction skills as well as dodging so he can avoid Gaara's sand for a long time. Still Gaara outlasts Neji in terms of chakra and Neji can't attack while defending himself. For these reasons, Gaara beats Neji with mid-high difficulty. Getting past Gaara's auto defence is going to be very difficult and Neji was definitely fast, but I'm not sure if he is as fast as weightless Lee or Sasuke.

His base speed is definitely below Lee and Sasuke but he doesn't need for it to be as good. he just needs to get Gaara in the divination circle then use his super mega fast 64 strikes, which the auto defense might not be able to keep up with. Of course he first needs to do some flips and stuff to get behind any walls of sand Gaara puts up.. and Gaara seems to be a genius at keeping people away from him when he tries, so that will make it super hard. I think Gaara wins this high diff, but if Neji gets lucky and Gaara underestimates him, he might get Gaara with the 64 strikes.
